Congrats Gary. That was some serious BS that went on with your temp position. They're probably already regretting that decision. Good luck with the new gig.

Too bad that temp job did not work out. It would have been local only and the company drivers make 300 to 400 per day!
Home every evening...

Oh well,I guess it was too good to be true! Plus it would have been like walking on egg shells every day. They watch the drivers every move with 2 different computer systems in the trucks. If you stop anywhere for more than 3 minutes it would tell on you...

At least this gig the trucks have no Quallcom or Cadec or any tracking device.
They said as long as we are on time he does not care what we do.

Good one Avenger...:D

He said West Marine was very strict on the delivery times but other than that i think it will be a good deal.
I hope i only have to do the West Marine runs for a short time until the Fed-Ex deal gets going...;)

Re: Starting a new job.....again!

It is the C15 engine,I assume these are computer controlled because the mechanic said he would plug in and turn the power and speed up on it.
Yes, all CATs have been fully electronically controlled since the late 90s and the C15 from day one. There are multiple horsepower and torque ratings that can be changed with software alone.

They had them set at 67 mph and pulling a hill if you let the rpms get over 1700 it would set off an alarm to dispatch...
Those were some slow trucks to get a heavy load up through the gears
Depending on how they set up the CAT (owner decision) there can be RPM limits in each individual gear. The reason there are RPM limits is to force an early upshift. This kinda forces the RPM in the next gear, and especially at cruise, hoping you end up in the sweet spot for fuel.

The KW is a 10 speed OD with 3:36 rears.Maybe the Cat will pull good.
The 3.36 and the 10 speed are designed also to force Low RPM operation. You can lug this beast down to 1000 RPM before upshifting, and if she holds the gear anywhere above that leave the stick alone!!! You cannot hurt them, it's easier on you and that's how you get fuel economy. I would even try upshifting at the point where she hits 1000 RPM in the next hole if you are on relatively flat ground. As soon as you get into the next gear, hammer it and let her climb. Ask what rating he "flashes" her to and let me know what year model, and I'll find the exact horsepower curve and you'll see why I suggest this . . . ;)

Re: Starting a new job.....again!

Thanks Limited Time,
I will be running up and down I-77 and I-81 for the most part.
They do all the way up to Mass and down to Mobile AL.
The Northeast should be a joy this winter....lol!

QC,
I will let you know what they flash it at.
The mechanic said their other trucks are set at 2150 rpms ( i think) in tenth gear.
And the speed limiter is set at 98 mph.

Not that i will ever run that fast..;)

Re: Starting a new job.....again!

after my temp to perm job did not ever go perm, then they didn't hire anyone for that spot i had to go job hunting again!

Found a small family owned company after filling out more applications than i could remember.

They offered me a full time driving job with benefits.

So,going to give it a try. It will be hauling for west marine out of their new distribution center near me.
I thought it was ironic!...being i refuse to shop at west marine.

I start next week as soon as they get my truck decals done and i get moved into the new ride...

Congrats on the new job. That KW looks like a nice truck to me. I could think of worse things to drive all day long.

Thanks! Yea,It does have a pretty nice interior. 75 inch deep sleeper, desk and tons of storage.
I have to get my high def TV mounted, fridge installed,Cb radio,GPS,power inverter and all the other stuff.
Still looking at TV antennas that have the best range. It does have a mounting bracket behind the top air dam i can use to mount to.
Once i get it all setup it should be nice.
Looking at the round omni-directional antenna for the TV.

I went out today and bought a nice thick memory foam pad for the bed and some new microfiber bedding...should be comfy.

If i got to live in it several nights a week i want it nice..;)

Re: Starting a new job.....again!

Great truck I like the T2;s good riding truck fairly easy to drive and most importantly RELIABLE. I did some time in a T2 I freaking hate the northeast in the winter it isn't so much the city roads as it is the parking lot. I dug my freaking bobtail out of a a central drop yard in Pa bobtailing in winter is the worst. The southeast and West Virginia are the freaking worst for snow though its like they refuse to salt or treat anything.

The only truck I would have over the T2 is what I mainly drove International Prostar I loved it 72" Skyrise sleeper all the storage you could ever want. I had mine pretty well decked out to. I quit driving when I lost my dedicated run went from $275.00 per day to .37 cpm at 2000 per week and only home once every 3 weeks. Loved my Prostar Power everything and all controls in the steering wheel.

OHHH and before you go to the Ta and spend money on a cooler I swear check out the thrift stores and Goodwill I bought a Coleman Powermate at a thrift store for $8.50 worked great still use it on the boat.

Great info! Thanks!

The owner of this company is starting to be a jerk.He told me to call him Friday (yesterday) and see what the status was on the truck being ready.
Well, right off the bat he started yelling that he never told me that! AND he never promised me the KW.
He said if i had a problem driving one of his old Freightliners maybe i don't need a job!
I bit my tongue to keep from telling this jerk off!
I drove over there today and looked at the Freightliner that was parked on the lot...What a piece of junk! Bald tires, oil leaks and the paint was peeling off. This truck was at least 10 years old! This is a truck that every weigh station would love to do a safety inspection on!

Before he ended the conversation on the phone he said he would call me Monday or Tuesday then just hung up on me!
This knucklehead better have changed his attitude by then and have the KW ready or he can go @#$! himself!

I have been trucking since 1982 and don't need a jerk like him to talk to me like that!
I may just tell him to stick it where the sun don't shine anyway!

Re: Starting a new job.....again!

That is the reason why I got out of the industry all together. They promise and say one thing but when it gets down to it the do not hold up to there end of the bargain and act like they are doing you the biggest favor by lettin you drive their unsafe POS. I have actually gotten fired and in a physical altercation for refusing to drive a truck that was unsafe. The altercation ended up with the owner on the ground face down, me punching the back of his head, while his dad and friend were kicking me in the head and ribs.
Do yourself a favor and start looking for another job, because if he is this way before you have actually turned a wheel for him, just think what he is going to be like when you have been out for a couple of months and want to get home for a weekend. You might not see home for 5 or 6 months at a time.
The last driving job I had the owner hed me running Houston to Denver. I live in southern california. He had another driver running L.A. to Pheonix, he lived in Amarillo Tx. sometimes it makes you think that they enjoy messing with their drivers lives. Never got that one.

Re: Starting a new job.....again!

You are exactly right stic88,
The more i think about it the more i think this guy is just another A-hole!

I have been bothered about it all weekend.
I looked up his DOT rating and he has had several trucks put out of service in the last year as well as 6 drivers.
No wonder he said they use "only" loose leaf log books. That way he can have you run more than 11 hours a day and try to fudge the log books to look legal.

All i got to do is call the temp service i was working for and get a local driving assignment. Not much money but it may be better than working for a guy with that kind of attitude.
The people that run the temp service are super nice and i can pick what days i want to work. The pay is only 15 bucks an hour though..
They said i could come back any time. We left on very good terms.

Re: Starting a new job.....again!(MAYBE NOT!!)

I know absolutely nothing about the trucking industry other than calling for one to move tooling from place to place around our plants when needed.
Sounds like this job could end up as a nightmare for you. I hope everything works out for you but if it means finding something else and doing temporary work for a while it could well be the best thing in the long run.
Good Luck with it all my friend.
