Re: the 1967 Holiday 18 and Multiple Boat Syndrome

we had a massively productive weekend, at least by my standards. this was the last weekend when i'll be here instead of at cabin and it won't be brutally hot, so i wanted to have a production frenzy.

got all the remaining non-tin out of the boat cept the transom and sanded down the gunwales where sheet metal screws had left jagged hand-biters. i have the Durabak for gunwales and topside on the way, and will 40-grit the rest of topsides when i'm ready to apply it. cut down and test fitted the teak step pads for gunwales. scraped and wire brushed remaining residue from the astroturf. headlights have been removed so i can paint frames black and re-seal em with 5200, and replace bulb on one. it's an obsolete sealbeam; hope i can find one.

pulled outboard off transom, no thanks to my @#$%& chineez engine hoist. it's now strapped to a tree to hold it upright.

pulled all the hardware i could get off the transom (was able to get the knee brace bolts loose from outside, thanks to the gap between transom and splashwell). hopefully i can line up my neighbor tonight to finish that part. channel on top of transom was pretty hashed, and i'll likely either drop some reinf on top or TIG weld the booboos. or both.

bought all remaining plywood needed, and made some headway on both console and on bulkhead from existing dash bottom down to floor. bought a gallon of Ace white enamel for hull base coat, plus more absurdly expensive brass and SS hardware.

unfortunately learned this morn that Moeller (cursed be their name) has discontinued the underfloor tank i'd ordered, calling it obsolete. guess they'd say the same about my boats, and me. so we're back to trying to figure out good solution for gas tank(s) in terms of weight distribution. had planned on re-usng original tank under splashwell too til i could afford a 2d one, but it has rust pitting beginning on bottom; i'd rather drop another 200 now than wonder when it will start dripping gas into bilge.

pix tomorrow!

i managed to cut my console sections just sliiiightly off square, about 3/32" over 45" height.
I hear you on that one...

Sounds like you made some great progress last weekend! Waiting patiently for pics.......:D

Lol, B2, Wow, it is going to get "brutally hot" up here by the weekend too, about 16-17 degrees celcius..that is what about 64-66 degrees Fahrenheit.

Bummer that tank is discontinued, but your right to change out that tank now...fuel in the bilge is a bomb waiting to go off. Sounds like your making good progress.

We don't have black widows spiders here on the island, but they are on the mainland of BC..ouch, hope that heals up for too.

Re: the 1967 Holiday 18 and Multiple Boat Syndrome

fair complaint, Jas. i just posted another 18 pix. http://s1221.photobucket.com/albums/dd462/payasodelmar/

not much progress in last few days due to that pesky gainful employment and cold/rainy weather. could use some of that brutal heat now. some of the stuff i deal with at work is pretty depressing, and we've had quite a few really depressing cases last few weeks. by time i get home, i feel like the sponge after the dishes are done.

hoping to get console at least glued together tonight. i keep looking at pic of Howza's Kingfisher to inspire me...... but manana....ahh, yes, manana....the Eagle flies on friday and i can send the next $500 parts order off. no doubt my mom would have something to say about fact that i still live paycheck to paycheck at 53 years old..........once i get the house paid off next year, may need to find a bigger starcraft..........

CJ, wait til you see the solution to the cutting booboos.....1.5x1.5" L-channel along the front edge hides a multitude of sins.

Re: the 1967 Holiday 18 and Multiple Boat Syndrome

SUMMERTIME and the boating is pricey... anyone who thinks they don't come home with much for the $ they spend at the grocery should try marine parts or stainelss hardware. sheesh. but now all i have left to buy for this boat are foam, tires, and a steering system (want to get console placed before i measure for that).

Jas, i'll try that on next batch. headin to cabin this weekend so no boat work but maybe i can do some fishing.

gonna have to add floor to console just to hold it square.....the angle brackets in corners help but it's still a parallellogram. have plenty of 3/4 left to make it from but i think i'll mount it on 1/2" thick Starboard strips to raise it slightly off the deck so it doesn't rot as fast.

Re: the 1967 Holiday 18 and Multiple Boat Syndrome

well, the sole progress last night was AN EXORCISM

yup, i was careful cutting the wood. cut both sides together so they were identical, faced Mecca, said the appropriate incantations. but somehow the plywood console became possessed by the demon MURPHY and its little head began to spin around when i went to assemble it. well, not really, but it parallelogrammed on me badly. so we applied the Holy 3/4" Floor, spilled a little Pacifico on it, and confronted it with the raw power of iron (stainless steel, actually). now it's square and the top fits, hallelujah! next step will be fitting the dash...cut it oversized so i could cut it down as needed to cover gappage.

Jas, i'm still doing something wrong on the pix....did these as you suggested

You need to use the IMG code links that photobucket provides. Copy/paste each one to your post, hit enter to go to the next line, paste in another one, etc etc.

Re: the 1967 Holiday 18 and Multiple Boat Syndrome

thanks E, will keep trying. i can't run the high tech machines at our office either.

i'm having major hell with the transom bolts. shallow flathead slots, plus apparently peened over screw ends, is making each one a battle. and there isn't enough screw sticking out past the nut to grind off peen with die grinder. anyone have any wisdom or magic to offer? did y'all reuse your transom hardware? the easy way would involve the cutting wheel, and i'm almost there. but i'm sure that i 'd have to use somehting with different head since i ain't seen nothing like those at Ace Hardware. thanks for any input!

so i worked for abt 4 hrs on console; installed shelf and still more bracing and got started on wiring. will get some pix once it looks like anything other than a mess. boat is full of water from recent rain so i guess i should check for leaks tonight; been there 3 days so apparently any leaks aren't gonna sink me. :D i'm not being lazy, i'm COLLECTING HULL INTEGRITY DATA! :D:rolleyes: need to install spare jack from Starchief to raise it so it will drain, which requires i inflate tire on main Starchief jack, which requires that i dig out and fire up carppy little compressor

Yup, that's what I did, cut/broke everything off and used all new (matching) stainless bolts.;)

B2 - I found bins and bins full of those exact stainless slotted machine screws at both Lowes and HD. Of course that's only good info if you have one of those big box stores in the Chihuahuan desert.

COLLECTING HULL INTEGRITY DATA
Love it!

Are they 1/4-20's? If ya get them loose, grip with a pair of pliers or vice grips. Wiggle a lot and they will break off below the nut. Punch out with a bolt or set tool. Much faster than grinding with a dremel.

You've gotta watch what you buy from the slowes B2. I bought 6 ea 1/2" OB motor bolts and spent $49 @ slowes. Took them back after going to a bolt store and spent $10 for same SS bolts. They do have the smaller SS bolts in prepackaged bags for a reasonable price.

F%&k Lowes. Just went there last night to get some stainless bolts for my kicker bracket and swim platform installs. They've got this nice big section of stainless bolts and it was completely picked over. Like why the heck have it and not keep it stocked? Home Depot doesn't have squat.

Re: the 1967 Holiday 18 and Multiple Boat Syndrome

me too. they have boxes of 100, which is way cheaper than buyin em per each, and their bins are kept well stocked. don't hurt that they are 300 yds from my home and i've been shopping there for 23 years.

THANK YOU THANK YOU THANK YOU to Jas, GA, and everyone else for input. got the transom out last night after 3 1/2 hrs of fun. decided the Dremel would be outgunned here so grabbed the angle grinder and had at em. was able to get screws backed out enough that i could cut heads off w/o much gouging of adjacent tin. couldn't fit 2x4 under ends so i was working with a pair of oak 1x2s and a big honking prybar. i'm beat and scraped up but happy to be past a big gumption trap. pix to prove it later today...buried here at work.

Re: the 1967 Holiday 18 and Multiple Boat Syndrome

you can see the stainless grab handle some PO added to transom...not sure if i'll reinstall on new transom, may depend on how much mayhem it takes to remove. inside of transom skin is pretty clean with none of the nasty corrosion some of you have had. so tonight i'm cuttin and gluing a new one, and then will drop it in next week after sevl coats of epoxy and a few of spar on exposed portion, to go with the bare-wood retro look. heading back up to cabin this weekend so no work there, just soakin in the wood fired stock tank hot tub with the Admiral. i guess we can make boat horn noises, seems to work for Gib......(but i won't be mentioning the offer on the other Holiday)
