1. Porsche 928

2. Porsche 997 GT2

3. Dodge Omni GLH turbo

4. Lamborghini Countach

5. Subaru WRX-STi

Among old American cars, I have to say that I am partial to '63 split-window corvettes [dad had one], and the '69 Oldsmobile Toronado. At a car show where I showed my 928 recently, a man showed with a 1948 Packard. THAT was a cool old ride!

Re: top 5 uncommon dream muscle cars

When the word "muscle car" is used it opens the door to the question as to what is a muscle car. Most car experts limit it to certain american made cars made between 1964 to around 1970/1971. A car can be a performance car for sure and still not be considered by the AAA a true muscle car. Example would be Mustangs/Camaros/corvettes etc. As a general rule almost all real "muscle cars" were made to run on 100 octane.Muscle car is an old school term but today any kid with a GT mustang thinks he has a muscle car. He doesnt know the differance. Its safe to say no "muscle cars" have been made since the very early 70s but it depends on what the word means to you as to wheather you want to argue the point. The people at Barret Jackson share the same definition as me.

Are you talking about the Hemi Under Glass...with the engine behind the driver?

If so...I still recall the picture on the cover of Hot Rod....

Yep, I have one, the engine is still in the front though,,,, corners like a dream!

Mustangs & Cobras..out...Non Ford/Chevy..and V8 pintos..well those were shoebox specials for the 1/4 mile...Dont think that was a factory car, even so it's a Ford

Hear ya on the Challenger..had a chance to buy a 71, but the guy (co-worker) kept flaking, it was for sale, then it wasn't...Then it was, then it wasn't..talk about frustrating...

But the reason I said Non Ford/Chevy, because the entire list would be 428 SCJ Cobras or the GT500KR series on the FORD side..The Chevy side would be full of 396SS Cameros or Chevelles,

I noticed your roundup to include pontiac's (the verdict is in) JUDGE
I would have included the Mercurys line up of cyclones and comets
buicks gsx stage 1 and grand national
olds 442 but kinda considered all gm products chevy as well as lincoln mercury to be Ford.
Sure doesn't leave much although Mopar's no slouch in the cool muscle dept.

Actually I think GM always put the Corvette in the "sports car" category. they always wanted it to get top billing over all cars. many years you could get the same engine in the Impala or Chevele, but it was listed with 5-10HP less for no reason. Its also why starting in 67 you could only get a tripower setup on a Vette.

Ahh, men debating cars. Gotta love it. How can you exempt Ford and Chevy but not Mopar?? If it wasn't for the muscle car era, there would be no mopar to speak of. Mopars were so awesome that they could release them in any ugly color scheme and that color became the most sought after thing out there. Like lime green or purple.
P.S. I'm not really a mopar guy but they were too big a part of the muscle car era to be ignored (or included in this case).

I know it's a ford but I like the GT-40 for uncommon. Not sure if it qualifies as a muscle car however.
What about the Pantera?

Maybe because the GT40 dominated the 24hr Lemans finished #1st 2nd and 3rd place! What a fabulous car it was, sure put the FORD FE427 powerd cars on the front line in the muscle car wars.
Perhaps the most powerful domestic production car, although a few street versions may not exactly qualify as production available to the general public.

Those are very good points.

-I'll posit this however: The term "muscle car" came from the 1970's, and it denoted cars that had big motors and not much car for that big motor to boot around. Typically, the only cars that met this standard were American.

Then came the 1980's....

Case in point: Dodge Omni GLH turbo. This car could put away a quarter mile in about 15.0 seconds flat, but listen...it was a Dodge Omni, and the performance came from a tiny 135 cubic inch engine paired to a fairly large turbocharger. The turbo had a lot of lag, but holy hell Batman! When that thing finally got on the spool all sorts of things happened and they happened quick and you had better have both hands on the wheel since the torque steer was ridiculous! That car was all attitude. Today, your wife's Camry would blow-off that GLH turbo, but if you had to drive both down a strip you would find the torque curve of the GLH to be one of the most intoxicating you can imagine. Porsche 951's are very similar. THAT's a muscle car, though from a different era.

The Porsche 928S2 that I own? It turned a 13.86 @105 in Bithlo, Florida a few years ago, and if you take a cloverleaf on-ramp at 90 mph and get half way around and encounter a dead truck in the road...the car just stops. It doesn't try to spin out like most cars do, it just stops. When I get on this car, the nose does not rise. When I brake, the nose does not dip. This chassis is the best engineered ever, in my opinion!

-I suspect my mom could win autocross races in this thing. And then drive it from the track at 170 mph with the air conditioning freezing while reading a book, it is that stable.

While I do not argue with what you say I would like to point out that muscle cars and autocross are fundamentally incompatible. Hard to get that 50/50 ratio with a big block in the front no matter where you put the battery.

Re: top 5 uncommon dream muscle cars

Not necessarily in order but:
69' Z28 with the high winding 302
62' Impala SS 409/425hp
62/63' Pontiac Catalina w/ the 421 Super Duty
65' Chevelle w/ the L79 327 (again...those high winders)
65' Olds 442 4/spd.
There are cars faster than these, but I always liked these.:)
Oh, cudo's to JB on the Duesenberg and Caddy V16 pics....cool, unique cars.;)

All nice cars but I am partial to the 1965 Barracuda, with the 413 hemi, 415 hp, and is in the history books for being the first car to launch all 4 wheels in the air on take off!

The early Barracudas never had Hemi's from the factory! Without checking I think the Hemi's came out around 67-68!

I had a 66 Formula (S) and the only HP engine available in those years was a 273, Solid lifter single AFB, dual point distributor! Only problem was that it had the rear end from a Vakient 6 cylinder and you could blow it into pieces so quick you didn't dare do many burn outs! I put 3:90's in the rear of mine and was easy off the line and it would tear up HP 289 Mustangs!!!

That's just a different definition of "muscle car" is all. There were muscle cars from the '80's, '90's, and this decade. The difference is that a muscle car from today, such as that Subaru WRX-STi not only handles well, it also gets decent gas mileage.

A modern muscle car such as a Pontiac GTO or G8 can get 20 mpg and turn 12 second quarter mile times. It can carry your family to dinner tonight, take the boat to the lake tomorrow, and win an autocross race on Wednesday. All on street tires.

Isn't progress wonderfull?

...yeah, I suppose. I like technology....in specific areas.
However, when it comes to muscle cars in the true context of the machinery, it has to have some soul, which is a completely different level from the auto-geek element.
Ain't nobody ever gonna right a song about a subaru wrx out on the street or 2.3 litre turbo dodge on Saturday night;)

Re: top 5 uncommon dream muscle cars

67-68 XR7 Cougar would be # 1 for me for "uncommon " cars

I have a 70' Chevelle Malibu "hotrod" in the garage in the works, 6.0L Vortec truck engine/4L60E tranny + corvette cam = 400hp, 24 mpg automatic muscle car. Also has 4 wheel Baer Brakes, 2" lowered/ upgraded suspension. Still don't handle like my 96' Thunderbird does though, everyone thinks these were FWD but they are REAR DRIVE independent suspension car. With a little work they corner great and mine has a 51/49 weight balance with the V6 under the hood (with a vortech blower, ported head, and a cam). With 275rwhp/301rwtq and the good weight balance I was leaving stock corvettes Behind on the autocross track and a best of 12.9@107 on the 1/4 mile with a car thats close to the 2 ton mark (3860# without me in it)

That's not true. There can be songs written about modern cars. The problem is that the song will be some disgusting Hip Hop tune that relies on 15 inch woofers in the trunk to sound right, and the kids that write it don't care about their cars the way we did anyway. They are more interested in 24 inch wheels than 427 inch engines.

And the license plate will vibrate so much you can't read it~

Yep, I had a 1966, also. It is the only car that I wish I had kept.

I also had a 1965, with the 273...with Cragar chrome rims.

I kept a magazine ad for that year, and get a kick out of the base price!
