22' Walkaround

I fish.
Wife suns.
Daughter does both.

Walkaround gives me full access to boat, from bow to stern. A decent cabin for napping/changing/weather protection. Also, price was right. :D

Re: What and Why?

What: 19'6" Starcraft superfisherman.
Why? Because I fish with the family up in Canada. Also to join the Starmada and take over the world!!!!

It is probably the best larger fishing boat out there in my opinion. Can seat 5 and fish 5 comfortably.

Love it! I think there are a bunch of us OMC'ers here, they are just afraid to speak up. That boat's a beauty!

Re: What and Why?

My roommate asked for a recommendation and I told him that I was partial to a 21' SeaRay like I had learned to barefoot behind. He was happy as he told me he had bought a 200BR earlier that day. Cool that my recommendation had already been taken.

When he was transferred elsewhere, he said that my, (well not yet), wife and I could rent it. We decided to buy it instead.

The Starcraft came with the lakehouse and, while I wouldn't have chosen a deck boat for LOTO, it has been a good boat for us.

Re: What and Why?

When I first posted I just talked about my current boats, now that I'm experienced and know exactly what's best. I see a lot of others are talking about their first boats, so I'll do the same.

When I was a little kid Dad had a small wood fishing boat with a tiller outboard. During my teen years Dad sold the boat and it became my life's ambition to have a boat of my own. All I knew was that it had to be a runabout with a long front deck, had to have a steering wheel and a convertible top.

I got the boat before I got a car. Dad said I could put a hitch on his car to pull it with. At first I looked at small aluminum runabouts, but they were too expensive. Dad said I could use his old motor, but he discouraged me from buying someone else's used junk, so I had to save more money to get a new boat.

I was 17 in the summer of 1967 when the "boat" was delivered. It came from Minneaplois, MN and arrived in a cardboard box. All the pieces were either marine grade plywood or veneered mahogany. The 16' luger kit cost me $165.

I was working 32 hours a week at night and attending the University during the day, so I only had a few hours free time each week for the work to proceed. Half my money went to college expenses, the rest into the boat. The hull was completed that fall, and by that time I took delivery on the trailer too(also parts in a box). Once the trailer was assembled, we flipped the hull and got her on the trailer.

By next summer the boat was basically completed and she was launched with Dad's 10 HP Wizard. By that time I also had bought a car, so Dad's never was needed after all. Although it was a tiller, I knew the potential was there. THe next year I bought a brand new Evinrude 40 HP Lark, and added the steering wheel. The windshield and top were added the third year.

I pulled the rig with a 1961 Ford equipped with a 144 CID 85 HP motor and a 3 speed stick shift. I guess the outfit weighed maybe 1000 pounds. Who says you need a pickup truck to pull a trailer? Only once did I have to stop and shift to first to make it up the hill.....LOL. (It WAS a big hill though)

The sad part of the story was that 3 years later the boat was destroyed in a car accident. I was stopped at a signal and the guy that hit me was drunk in a borrowed car. I sued and got a brand spanking new fiberglass boat out of the deal.

Re: What and Why?

boat.jpg

This is my first boat. It is a 2002 Key West 1900 CC with a 2002 Mercury 115hp outboard motor.

Why?
I have grown up almost entirely on the coast. I've wanted a boat my whole life. I recently got married and moved from Charleston to Beaufort when someone told me that when you live in this town you either need to own a boat, or know someone who owns a boat, or your weekends will all be booring. One month later, I had a boat. My wife had been poking around craigslist and saw a carolina skiff for about $5k and joked about getting it (this is weeks after the marriage), and I said not to joke, because if she's not careful I WILL find a boat.

I wanted a center console for fishing, but also for all the open space it provides and the simplicity of it. It is also very easy to clean. I went with the Key West because 1) it fit the budget and 2) on the recommendation of her father, who has a 17ft CC Key West. It has much higher gunwales than the bay boats everyone has around here, which we wanted, and it has about a 6 inch draft which is nice in the shallows but it can still handle fairly rougher seas. We did look at new boats as well, but I felt better about banging up my first $7500 boat than I did about a $30,000 boat, so we went with what you see above. So far I've had half a summer on it, so I'm still learning and finding things to fix with it, but also loving every minute.

The trim motor could go at any time, but I knew that going into it. I've had to replace the starter solenoid and have the navigation lights jury rigged to work right. I found out in december that the bilge pump was never hooked up, my cabin lights that I just replaced are not getting any power, and lo and behold the live well pump that worked when I bought it has ceased to do so. I replaced the wheels/bearings/tires on the trailer, the front wheel/stand, and need to work on the lights. So obviously it still needs work.

But it floats, and the engine runs, and the accessories are still getting power to my fish/depth finder and new VHF radio, so I still have fun.

When its time to look for a new boat, we've been talking about something with a cuddy cabin for naps, and certainly with a head. But we could always just get a bigger CC as far as I'm concerned :)

Re: What and Why?

I bought our Chaparral for several reasons. As for its size, any boat we have needs to fit in the garage and ours does with an inch to spare. I'd like a 20 plus footer but it just won't fit. As for the brand, in Minnesota, everyone has a boat and so having boated for 38 years am familiar with many of the brands. I went and looked at every brand of currently made fiberglass, open bow boats available. They all fit into a certain niche. Some were more branding than substance while some thought throwing on stainless speaker covers would draw your attention from its shortcomings. What disappointed me about every single one I looked at was the interior design, materials and attention to details. Most of the brands were blatent, in your face substandard. Those things are important to me since I tend to keep my stuff for a long time. Then I found Chaparral and was suprised. They simply built a better interior than the dozen or so other brands I looked at in this size range. There was no getting around the fact the product was simply better in most respects but at a cost. Of course Cobalt quit making small bowriders in 2002 so they were not a comparison. The hull was the heaviest hull of any 18 footer on the market (2900 lbs with just the v6) for the better part of 8 year so you get a stable ride, etc. I didn't necessarily get a good deal but Chaparrals are far and few between and that was a different economy then. New Chaparrals were sold out at the two MN dealers and used boats quickly sold. Gas was nearing where it is today and so I was drawn toward a V6 vs the larger 270hp V8 option. I managed to locate a 2003 which was still being produced since there was a long period of time before they refreshed the model line up. In other words the 2003 was the same as the then current model year with maybe a 5% difference due to year over year changes. The downside of a Chaparral is that it is so luxurious that there is constant worry my two young boys will do something to damage the interior. You can't practically fish out of it (not that we fish much) since it is very difficult to reach the water for an adult and kids can't at all.
If I had it to do over, I'd hold out for the mpi v8 or at least the mpi v6. In MN, 99% of boats are trailer boats, under 20 feet. When we talk about entry level, we mean entry level brand not size because most will never upgrade because of the lack of practicality. We may not admit it but it's nice to get compliments on our boats. Because Chaparrals are almost non existant at all but certain lakes and most boats are old and neglected or new but inexpensive, I get tons of attention at the ramps when I'm at my usual lake hang outs. When I bought it even the mailman stopped and got out of his jeep to take a look as did the gas service man servicing the neighbors. I'm glad I chose this boat on every level. Even the trailer is top notch making even loading and unloading a little easier. I know people throw the word premium around but really owning a premium brand boat is a fun experience.

Okay, here you go. One other point previously mentioned by another poster - I like to be different. Nothing against SeaRay or Bayliner (At least in this post, hehe:D), but there are a LOT of them out there.

I've never figured the picture posting thing. I don't have a host and all the pics are too big to attach. I realize I couldn't sound more unsavy in 2011.

Re: What and Why?

When we were a young family of 4 (77) we were running a 15ft 58 Lone Star utility w a 25 Gale.
We were struggling to plane every weekend with 4 plus the greatdane and stuff for a weekend at the cottage.Needed a new bigger utility I was buying by price and size.Checked a real pretty 18'Lund it was $1090,Then a 18' Crestliner ugly green but really big and just $999.
With the 25 on it weekends were no longer a struggle planed easily with or typical load.
We painted The name "the incredable HULK" on the side in huge letters.Eventually ended up with an 88 50 Evinrude tiller.Son uses it now.

Re: What and Why?

I bought a bayliner 19 classic because I like to stand out in the pack. LOL Actually my wife bought me the bayliner for my 30th birthday. She did a really good job as it fit all our specs. Price was right, it rides good, it tows easy, and it stores easy. In the I wanted a 4 cylinder I/O for ease of maintenence( mercruisers only for me, just because thats what I grew up on) and fuel usage. Most times we just cruise to a cove throw anchor and swim all day, so usually one 30 gallon fill up per summer.
After grandad having all sea-rays I never would have thought I would love a bayliner. Most important was price, just like infideltarget I dont like paying for depreciation.

Re: What and Why?

Ok, I will play. I bought a new 08 Four Winns H220 Frenzy. 22' 5.7l 300hp VP duoprop. This boat has pretty much every option that FW offers.
Why new? Because I shopped around and was able to find a previous years leftover. I got all the advantages of owning a new boat at a used boat price. This will make the depreciation almost nonexistent. When I bought the boat, I saw multiple examples of the same boat with up to 200hrs for the same price. The list price was 60k, but I'm not saying what I paid for it. I may want to sell it to one of you some day.:D:D
That said, I don't buy boats as a investment. So if I lose money, no worries.
Here are a few pics
