Nightmare of a first time boat buying experience. Comments and advice appreciated!

Sounds like there is no way that the guy could have driven the boat and not known the problems. Does your sale paperwork say "as is"? Also, some states have laws about "full disclosure" on sales so you might want to check that. How is the rest of the boat, particularly the floor and transom?

Near Miss with Cutoff Wheel - Hull Cut

Great, thanks for the info... I have exiled my cutoff wheel to the back of the shop far away from the boat... Decided that I can do what needs to be done with my oscillating tool and do the job better with it...

Near Miss with Cutoff Wheel - Hull Cut

Working in the boat today and knocked over a couple of tools. Somehow my cutoff wheel turned on when it flipped over on its side and put a cut in the hull. Fortunately I grabbed it quick and it didn't go all the way through but I don't know how close it came. It is on the curve from the inner...

    Floor Joint Design?

I was thinking of using only polyester resin on the underside as a wood sealant since it wouldn't be in pooling water in the case of a leak. But, as a second thought, if water did get under the floor then the floatation foam could trap water against the underside of the flooring which only...

    Floor Joint Design?

Yes, using 1/2 inch marine plywood, coated on the bottom side with resin, covered on the top side with resin and glass. I will be filling with foam.

    Floor Joint Design?

Sorry, I thought this would be a generic design question that applies to any project as opposed to specifically for my project and would be easier for others to find with the subject line specific to the general design question. Thanks.

    Floor Joint Design?

I am almost to the point where the floor will go on the new stringers. I have a question on the point at which a floor joint is required (8ft plywood in a 22ft boat) at right angles to the stringers. I am thinking that I should bevel the edges between the two pieces at 45 degrees with...

    Upper Housing Cap Paint Question

Thanks. Painted with epoxy primer followed by 2K high build. When I initially oversprayed a bit I found that some of the overspray was making the cap really tight which could cause the epoxy primer to "bond" the cap to the housing. I sanded it back off and then painted it with the cap bolted...

    Upper Housing Cap Paint Question

Thanks, I shot the upper housing yesterday and forgot to mask the cap before I started shooting so have overspray on the mating surfaces. I have a couple of areas with runs in the DP90 and will sand those a bit. I will sand the mating surfaces again and mask them just short of the outside...

    Upper Housing Cap Paint Question

Ready to spray paint this morning. Anyone know if these need to be painted on the mating surfaces or if painting would be a build up that doesn't allow the cap to go down as tight as it should leaving a gap on the bearing to race fit? Thanks...

    Upper Housing Cap Paint Question

Do the mating surfaces of the upper housing and the upper housing cap normally get painted to prevent corrosion or are they sealed enough when assembled to keep water out? I know there is an O Ring that keeps water out of the inside of the drive housing but since I am repainting the whole...

Alpha 1 Gen 2 upper gear preload

Hmmm, like the looks of the AC Delco ones but they don't go down low enough for the 5 to 7 inch lb spec. They go down to 3.7 ft lb which translates to 44.4 inch lb.

Grounding your Fuel Tank and Fuel Fill

Scott, is the bonding to a thru hull a requirement or an extra safety measure? My 76 Sea Ray didn't have that connection as it came from the factory. However, mine was originally an OMC drive so the engine had a direct connection path to water grounding whereas an Alpha One (which I will be...

Alpha 1 Gen 2 upper gear preload

Which one did you buy? I like the looks of the Seekonk but too spendy for my budget. Might see if I can find one to rent.

1990 mercruiser 3.0 harmonic balancer coming off

I don't know about a 3.0L but V8's typically have a harmonic balance bolt in the end of the crankshaft. But, as other's point out it should stay on by itself. Is the balancer or one of the pulleys warped causing wobble in it as it turns. Without a bolt, I would guess any wobble could cause it...

    Screw and Pilot Hole Sizes

Thanks for all the ideas. The AM/FM antenna (folds back for road travel), NAV/ANC light (folds back for road travel), the Hailing Speaker (opening facing front, and the horns (trumpet facing front) would see the biggest loading on the screws. I could use the T Bolt/Nut approach on the leading...

    Screw and Pilot Hole Sizes

As you can kind of see it in my profile pic, I am working on the upper hard top. The fiberglass top has backing boards that were used to attach the head liner but only a couple of hand rails on the top. Those hand rails were through bolted so leaked into the head liner. I am adding a GPS...

    Screw and Pilot Hole Sizes

In the past when I was young and dumb, I broke a few stainless screws trying to put them into fiberglass on the sailboat that I had at that time. Later I found out that the screws will bind in the fiberglass without the right size pilot hole. Is there a table of screw size versus pilot hole...

    Drive Housing Pit Filler?

Looking for something that will last a long time. The other PPG option is Omni which is a little cheaper. I have tried Base/Clear on cars and had run problems with the Clear. Will Rustoleum work over epoxy primer?

    Drive Housing Pit Filler?

By the way, what seems to be the best top coat for the DP90 based upon past experiences, Single Stage or Base/Clear? Acrylic enamel or acrylic urethane? Not sure if I will need a high build primer over the DP90 and before top coat.
