    1961 18hp johnson overheating

Maybe you are overstating the running temp. If testing with an infrared tester, try another one. If it's too hot to touch, it's running too hot -- and 170-200F would burn your hand. Having said that, temp is measured at the top of the head, not the face around the plugs (which is hotter).

    1961 18hp johnson overheating

Sounds like the pin may not be locked into the impeller. You should see 120 to 140F --160 or over is overheating. Test in a barrel (plastic garbage can) with water 6-8 inches above the water pump -- half way up the shaft is a good rule of thumb to be safe.

    J60ttleo hard starting/running a little rough

^^agree. Sometimes just cleaning up the armature and brush assembly is enough (use electrical cleaner spray). re. carb adjustment -- typo in #4. Clockwise (leaner) first until motor lean sneezes or stalls, then counterclockwise (richer) about 1/4 turn.

79 Evinrude 115 gear shift problem

re. cable length -- might relocate the box a few inches aft to give you the extra length. If the red plugs for motor and box match, you should be able to get the combo to work.

    J60ttleo hard starting/running a little rough

Could be timing -- might pull the flywheel and see if the key is damaged or missing/sheared. First, though, think I would try to fine tune the air fuel mixture needle at the carb tops. Motor should be warmed up and in the water. Easy does it -- try a little leaner first (clockwise). If it...

    Johnson 40 Hp wiring diagram

^^$10 is a good deal, imo. But additionally, you may have overlooked info. on the Mastertech site: https://maxrules.com/graphics/omc/wiring/REMCONTBOX.jpg If your motor has a red plug, this should help with wiring. (would then want to get a set of controls with a red plug).

    J60ttleo hard starting/running a little rough

Get an open air spark tester (not the inline type), and test again. Possibly with all plugs out so it turns over faster. I use Champion plugs gapped at .030 where recommended by the manufacturer, but the discussion is a little like oil preferences (long and endless). Ed. ^^That's an...

Johnson 40 HP without a generator charging system

^^Yup. Can't deny it. User issue in my case, no doubt. The Dutch have a tendency to change their minds slowly, once they form an opinion. I'm Dutch.

8hp Johnson water out of exhaust

Yes. But if you pull off a head to replace a gasket, you need to refinish the mating surface particularly if you suspect overheating. (They warp, whether overheated or not.) Simple job, but important.

8hp Johnson water out of exhaust

Go after the simpler stuff/tests first. Measure spark with an open air tester (auto parts store). Check compression. Post actual numbers.

    spark plug gapping

That was addressed some time back, but darned if I can find the thread or whose post it was. And maybe it's one of those phantom memories....

Running 1971 25hp Johnson at higher elevation lakes +3500’

^^would make sense, although the 72D is listed at a reputable sister site for the '71 model. Anyway, I would contact a shop up in the high country and see what they recommend.

Johnson 40 HP without a generator charging system

Not sure about the wee solar chargers (can't hurt but not sure how much it will help). I believe I've never had a generator system that worked well and proved durable, but that may be the operator rather than the system. Just charging them at home works fine or at the slip if in the water. A...

    spark plug gapping

My '82 is happy at .030, but not sure at the moment what Champion plugs I have in it.

Running 1971 25hp Johnson at higher elevation lakes +3500’

original for a '71 would be 72D -- .072" Might call up to the location to see what is recommended there. Nice job on hood detailing!

believe you need more power than that for your 23' Proline hull. But there might be a diagram here: https://maxrules.com/JOwireindex.php

Questions on flushing fuel pump and fuel line replacement

not seeing the forest for the trees. Rebuild the carbs (soaking, the whole nine yards), then run with a portable tank at 50:1. After you disconnect the oiling system, the fuel should clean the pump.

Questions on flushing fuel pump and fuel line replacement

Did that happen after you rebuilt the carbs? I would go to premix from a portable tank. Your permanent tank, if you have one, may be contaminated. Plug the oil line at the motor, and disconnect the harness. Mix 50:1 (a little less than 3 oz. oil -- 2 1/2-3 -- per gallon of gas. It sounded...
