1987 Power Play XLT-185 - floors, stringers, and upholstery

QUESTION FOR THE EXPERTS: The seam around my hull where the cap sat had some kind of clear silicone sealant around it, along with most of the items attached to the outside of the transom (swim platform brackets, trim tabs, thru-hull exhaust pipes, etc.). See the pictures below for an example...

    Restoring a 1990 Larson

That is smoking. My best in my Civic is an 11.90 @ 120 in the 1/4. With a few small changes and more seat time I'm hoping to get down to 11.50's this season. Of course this is in a FWD 4-cylinder street car with AC, lol. Anyhow...very cool...back to boat building!

    Restoring a 1990 Larson

Much respect! I'm nowhere near as fast and have half the cylinders, but racing is great fun, and the sport is full of great people.

    Restoring a 1990 Larson

You build race chassis? Tube welding is something I always wanted to get into. I've got the welder, just need a bender and a notcher. Do you still do anything with race cars? I do import 1/4 mile drag racing as a hobby.

    Larson SEI 180 Complete Rebuild

The gelcoat and the interior look great in the pictures. I may try to redo the gelcoat on my boat next winter - doing multiple colors with all the taping and untaping seems like a chore, and makes me a little nervous.

1987 Power Play XLT-185 - floors, stringers, and upholstery

Port mount got the glass trimmed and starboard mount got the glass laid last night.

...and I'm looking forward to writing a check to have a pro to do it on mine.

1969 Mako cut and gut project by Lectro88

I'm certainly not doubting that it's possible this can happen, but does anyone have a link to a thread or some first-hand story of someone actually rebuilding a boat with no cradle and the cap not being able to be put back on?

    New to boating, first restoration

I thought knocking or tapping stringers was the way to go as well, but it isn't. If there is enough glass over the wood core, you won't be able to tell a difference in the sound. When I did my full tear-out, I was surprised to find areas with total rot that sounded solid when tapping on them...

Buy laminating resin and a separate container of finishing wax. Only add the wax to the last layup, or when you know you need to sand. You can lightly sand unwaxed layups to knock down hairs and sharp edges, but it clogs up the paper very fast.

    '90 Maxum 2100SR - restoration & conversion

I'm going to have to do this on my ski locker once I put the deck down, as when I cut the height of my stringers I didn't cut them very straight.

    '90 Maxum 2100SR - restoration & conversion

You may find yourself trying to squeeze down into those compartments to seal them up, haha. What about setting it in position but blocked up on some pieces of 2x4? You may be able to reach down through the hatches and pipe PB on top of the top edges of the bulkheads, then having someone give...

1987 Power Play XLT-185 - floors, stringers, and upholstery

Got some work in on the boat today. I got some CSM down on the area around the ski locker where the glass had delaminated, and I glassed in the round corners of the ski locker opening, since there won't be any mahogany along these areas. While that was curing, I laid out and cut 2 layers...

Mercruiser 350 and Alpha One Gen 1 - maintenance recommendations?

I'm rebuilding a 1987 Power Play XLT-185 that has a Mercruiser 350 (260 hp) with SN 0B651656 and an Alpha One Gen 1 drive with SN 0B612075. The hours meter on the boat says 260 and I have old registration cards from 1995 - 2014. This is my first boat with an engine. Before I pulled the...

    ‘73 Bee Craft

This was a confusing concept to me too when I started - I think people explain it wrong, but I'm a newbie, so what do I know. I think the point is, you don't want a hard contacting spot (raw stringer, PB, whatever) immediately next to an unsupported spot (air gap) underneath the stringer. The...

1987 Power Play XLT-185 - floors, stringers, and upholstery

Thanks! Not sure I've got another boat restoration in me after this one, lol. Thanks. I do sleep, but when I do I'm dreaming about the next steps on the boat. :ROFLMAO: I'm just really motivated to get this thing splashed this season...for my family's sake, and so I can have my garage/shop back.

Restoring/Converting a 1994 Bumble Bee bass boat to a Center Console

The restoration will likely be more expensive than any comparable used boat, however any used boat you find is likely to have similar issues with rotting wooden structure. All that to say, don't do the restoration to save money - do the restoration for love of the work involved and for the...

Do these annodes look like they need to be replaced?

Forgive my ignorance on the issue, but I'm new to boating. So as long as there is still plenty of metal on the anode, regardless of how chalky it looks, it's good to still use?

1965 Glasspar Seafair - Floor replacement

I agree with Scott. Days of reading and watching YouTube videos, but you'll start to get the feel for what needs to be done. Take notes. BoatworksToday on YouTube has a link to their Amazon cart where you can see a lot of the consumables they recommend. US Composites is a great place to buy...
