1987 Power Play XLT-185 - floors, stringers, and upholstery

The front holes are kind of hidden in the shadows. :) Each chamber has 2 holes. The long chambers just outside the ski locker just span about 7 ft. It was similar on the ski locker and it worked out ok.

1987 Power Play XLT-185 - floors, stringers, and upholstery

I got all the screw holes drilled, and am happy to report that all my painstaking triangulation and pencil lines drawn on top of the deck worked out and I didn't miss the cleats (15/16" wide) for any of the holes! I also drilled my foam-pouring holes. I had one spot at the edge of the ski...

1987 Power Play XLT-185 - floors, stringers, and upholstery

I got 1 layer of CSM down on the back of the deck pieces today. Next, I gelcoated the ski locker. This was my first time using gelcoat. I think I was pushing the roller down too hard on the first coat, as it was splotchy in places. For the last half of the first coat and all of the 2nd...

It's about 6" deep at the front and about 8" deep at the back.

    Correct carb?

Hey...I resemble that remark. In my defense, the car makes over 400 hp, so it's not just a big exhaust slapped on a stock car.

1987 Power Play XLT-185 - floors, stringers, and upholstery

My wife was fine with me working on the boat today (Valentine's Day), so I made more progress. I installed the rest of the conduit for the fuel hose that will run beneath the deck, and notched the front piece of the deck to clear the conduit. I spent a good amount of time measuring and...

Yep, the black mud means it's totally gone. If your trailer has bunks instead of rollers, that may support the hull enough. But, the smart thing to do would be to build some additional support onto the trailer to hold the sides of the hull. I had talked to some guys that restored the same...

1987 Power Play XLT-185 - floors, stringers, and upholstery

The deck is cut to shape. There's still a lot to do before it goes down for the last time, but I'm happy to be at this point.

Fibreglass boat floor replacement - do I need to use fiberglass?

The stuff I'm using (from US Composites) says it expands 25x - 30x depending on temperature. Calculate your volume in cubic feet, divide by 30, and mix up / pour that amount. If it's not enough, you'll have to top it off. If it's just a little too much, it shouldn't add THAT much pressure.

If you gelcoat the hull instead of carpet, you still will want to sand/grind the surface for good mechanical bonding of the gelcoat. Since you're already going to be sanding/grinding, I'd just sand/grind the carpet old glue. I considered using PL in my build but ultimately decided against it...

Don't look at the whole project - look at the task in front of you and figure out what the next task will be. Try to stay on track and not get down a rabbit hole of chasing perfection on something, or on working on things that aren't a necessity to getting the boat on the water. Pull up the...

Are you going to put the engine in before the cap goes back on? I haven't decided yet, but was thinking I'd get the cap back on first.

1987 Power Play XLT-185 - floors, stringers, and upholstery

I've been distracted with other things this week, so my pace has slowed a little. More drive/engine maintenance parts have been getting delivered over the last few days. I also got a little bit done tonight on the hull. I PB'd the engine mounts into the bilge. The grain on the mahogany is...

Fuel tank to engine hose routing

Thanks guys...not sure how I missed the replies. Yes, that's my project (first boat with an engine) - 1987 Power Play XLT-185. It's got a Mercruiser 260hp V8 and Alpha One Gen 1. My full gut/cut thread is here with lots of pictures along the way.

    1987 Larson DC-215 restoration

My boat project was in another state for about the first month I owned it and I was going to work on it on weekends - that got old really quick. Having your project at home will feel good.

Correct, the bottom of the stringers follow the profile of the hull and taper off, at least on my boat. Look in my thread in the December/January timeframe and you can see what my stringers looked like. I made foam-board templates and test fit them before cutting my stringers out of plywood...

None of the work to replace stringers and the transom is necessarily hard, it is mostly just time consuming. I'm approaching 4 months of having the cap off my boat and I work on it nearly every day for at least an hour or two. The tools you need are pretty basic - mostly woodworking stuff...

1987 Power Play XLT-185 - floors, stringers, and upholstery

Rear decks are PB'd and screwed down. My wife's hand print is pretty much fully covered. I'll have her do another one over by the other hand prints when I glass the top of the deck. I put a screw every 6" on these...I'll probably open that up to one every foot on the rest of the deck.
