    if you did not mess with the drive shaft it would be a real Murphy day to have caused an issue in the gears ... why not just close it all up and test with the shift rod in place

    I think you need the drop the GC and perform a colonosscopy up the exhaust housing make certain the housing seals against the GC exhaust vaity ...try a sealant when reinstalling the GC.

    air or exhaust finding they way out the water intakes ? pull the prop maybe normal exhaust flow outwards is blocked ? is this a new sudden problem.... is this a new to you engine ...

    if you have a small drain hole on the side of the GC make certain it is open...run a pipe cleaner or piece of small wire to poke out any crud and let the water drain out.

    strange problem.... try some gasket goo then place a flat washer over the goo then install the bolt and nylon washer over the flat washer which will provide a flat surface easier to seal. hopefully you did try the standard marine gradenylon washer under the bolt head.

    half the fuel oil mix probably exists the cylinders during the open phase of the downstroke when both in & out ports are open face to face . The incoming fuel/oil mix pushes the exhaust out but that fuel mix reaches the exhaust ports and goes down into the buckect with some dirty carbon...

    actually... at idle ....the fuel is extracted from the upper section of the carb so the welch plug cavity is a critical path to check out. the top half of the carb's side channel leading to the upper cavity & idle screw is a very narrow passage and also needs a close inspection ...

    btw... a good VOM test on a capacitor is not conclusive even when it test good. You realy need a high voltage test apparatus to test a hogh voltage leven to check leakage. may was well pop in some new ones...

    find the wire on the primer.... backtrack to the switch find the same wire ... if the switch puts out 12v you should have 12v at the other end of the wire on the primer if not the wire is open or connections are oxydized . a grounded wire would cause a blown fuse
