1996 Mercruiser A1 Gen2 4.3 turns left on its own

Does it turn left only under power, or when idling? If only under power, adjust the anode fin above and behind the prop to be more centered.

    fiberglassing in new floor

In addition to what Emerger said, Lay some strips of cloth over the tops of the stringers, and around the perimeter of the plywood deck and saturate them with poly resin. Now install the plywood deck and screw thru the deck into the stringers with SS wood screws. On some boats, the edges of...

1978 mercury 850 fuel pump spring

The 4 coil ignition system (versus Distributor and 1 coil), idle pickup timing should be 0-9* ATDC. Max spark advance s/b 21* BTDC.

1978 mercury 850 fuel pump spring

Check the spark plugs to make sure they are the same color. If one is real clean, you may have water infiltration into that cylinder. Even with good spark, water puts the fire out.

Mercury M-800 Thunderbolt Full Throttle Only Now Help

Your reed valves are pretty rugged. I would be shocked if they are bad. Engine must spin 300RPM to choke properly (choke is working?) and make good spark. Clean starter cables. Also look for bulges on cables. This can indicate corrosion under insulation. I would set max spark advance to...

1978 mercury 850 fuel pump spring

What kind of shape is your wiring harness? They often go bad on those older motors. Is she running on all 4 cylinders? A bad fuel pump diaphragm can cause bogging at idle. I would rebuild the fuel pump thereby making sure the fuel pump is operating properly. and then see how she runs.

    Power tilt/trim

The PTT motor runs CW and CCW depending on which way you want to trim the motor. There are usually two types of PTT motors. One has a ground in the center of the motor winding. That is a 3 wire motor. Power on either of the two outer windings turns the motor CW or CCW. These use solenoids...

Transom mount steering tube, will this be ok?

Obviously the bolt cannot protrude below the steering cable, or it will hit the transom. Are you against getting the arm from the motor to the steering cable? You may not have the correct range of steering without it.

Transom mount steering tube, will this be ok?

Alternatively, get a long bolt that fits the steering arm. using some nuts, fasten the steering cable a few inches below the steering arm, so the tube is parallel to the transom.

Transom mount steering tube, will this be ok?

I think that mounting will give you issues. All you need is a rod on the steering arm that projects a bit downward a couple of inches. That would allow you to mount the tube parallel to the top of the transom. It is common to have a rod between the steering cable and the steering arm of the...

    Repowering with heavier outboard motor

If you can put the old motor back on the transom and launch the boat. Now walk to the transom (you are 250# right), or get your son to add his weight and see how much she lowers in the water.

    Transom Reufircement

You want the transom solid. If she flexes at all she will gradually weaken over time. Auto hatch supports ate therefore a bad idea. The top of the transom is where the most strain will occur under power. That is where you need the reinforcement. A 19 footer often will have a HP rating near 150.

    Lower unit

SEI may make one for your motor. Those early V6 motors sometimes had the small diameter 4-1/4" gearcase. Not sure you can get one of those, but the larger gearcase 4-3/4" may fit your motor. You would need a new prop for the larger gearcase.

Electrical weirdness. Here's my Multimeter test results

Rectifiers are easy to test with an ohmmeter. They should have continuity (zero resistance) one way, and no continuity (infinite resistance) the other way. Assuming you have a 3 wire Mercury rectifier, it is really a 4 wire standard bridge rectifier where the 4th wire (-DC) is ground. Measure...
