1977 Sylvan Sea Monster Side Console Rebuild

Sad part is I won't be able to splash until spring. Temps have been steadily highs of 40's to low 50's and only getting worse. Season is over here for this old fart. Promised the Admiral she could have her garage back before the rains this weekend. Was going to pull it tonight, but she said...

1977 Sylvan Sea Monster Side Console Rebuild

Thanks all for the kind words. Yep it's all for fishing. Got the 3 pedestal bases anchored in last night with blue Loctite on all the screws. Did the main wiring with labels and clear shrink over them. Did a temporary hookup to the battery to test everything. Just using 3 switches for now -...

Finished the carpet tonight and started installing the helm. Now if I could just figure out where my solid rivets are for the through hull one I need to buck.

1977 Sylvan Sea Monster Side Console Rebuild

Got a good jump this morning for a 10 hour marathon minus a short break to eat dinner with the Admiral. Started by peeling back half the Nautolex and spreading the adhesive. Laid the rear half then glued in the edges and around the bilge. The Admiral helped me encapsulate the bilge cover in...

1977 Sylvan Sea Monster Side Console Rebuild

Long busy afternoon and evening. Decided against side panels. I used "caulk saver" foam to fill the gaps along the edges to smooth the transition from the deck to the sidewalls. Also used some 3/8" to plug the screw holes for the seat bases to keep adhesive out of them. Took 14,000...

Thanks Randy. Proud grandpa here. As of last Saturday my eldest grandson has followed the family tradition going back to my grandfather and is now an official jarhead. Way to go Ryan!

1977 Sylvan Sea Monster Side Console Rebuild

The Admiral is letting me use her garage for a few days to get the Nautolex in. The garage has the water heater and boiler for the hot water heating system, so stays about 10-20 degrees warmer than the outdoor temps. Worked late last night. Lightly sanded and cleaned all topside surfaces, glued...

1977 Sylvan Sea Monster Side Console Rebuild

Used the past few nights to measure and make cardboard templates for the topside Nautolex. Went with the Sisal Cool. Today I finish cut the insides for a good fit in the channels and rough cut the outer for final trim after it's installed and dry. Now I need to hope for a weekend with temps...

1977 Sylvan Sea Monster Side Console Rebuild

Very little accomplished on the boat. Except for some measuring about all I did was wire, test and install the LED navigation lights. Wish now I had done that before installing the fore section of the main deck with that big support sticking up. What a PITA with no room to move. Had one side...

1977 Sylvan Sea Monster Side Console Rebuild

Finished the 56 rivets in the trim last night. 40 deg F and dark out, so had to use the head lamp again. Grabbed the Dremel with a cutoff and got rid of what stems didn't break off clean. 32 deg F when I got up this morning Can't do anything today, but supposed to be low to mid 50's for the...

1977 Sylvan Sea Monster Side Console Rebuild

Thanks guys. Beat it home tonight to lay in the 5 main deck sections. Only had to run a drill to clean up 5 of the 65 pre-drilled rivet holes, but all rivets are in and done. Was getting pretty dark when I finished so not the best photo.

Definitely calling on the 10ft rule for the inner gunwale trim pieces. I worked on the first section, sanding then hitting with some coarse compound on the old 3/4 hp 8" buffer (bought that sucker almost 50 years ago) then went over it with a 3M green pad to knock the shine down. The old...

1977 Sylvan Sea Monster Side Console Rebuild

Did a little fiberglass work tonight. Even though the raised deck support is bedded in epoxy and screwed from underneath, I added thickened epoxy fillets (USC 150 and cabosil) using WOGs recommendation of a plastic bag and spoon. Hey that works wonderfully!. Then I finished up with 2 layers...

1977 Sylvan Sea Monster Side Console Rebuild

Coated all sides and edges with Helmsman last night. Drove all 18 SS blind nuts in with the impact wrench and my makeshift alignment setup. Tested them after with one of the bases and the socket screws. Glad I did it now as one bound up on me and had to be replaced. Installed the perimeter...

1977 Sylvan Sea Monster Side Console Rebuild

Started the day going back to the store for some measurements I needed from the aft deck section and checking my drawing against the actual cutout for the bilge cover. Good thing it's less than 15 minutes from my house. Got home and vacuumed the inside of the hull followed by blowing out the...

1977 Sylvan Sea Monster Side Console Rebuild

Still at the store. Just taking a few minutes to sit, relax and grab a bite before heading home. All sides and edges of the 5 deck panels are now thoroughly soaked in OTF. Time to go home and watch some football.

Thx Watermann. Kind of a boring day today pulling and replacing the deck panels so I could measure and mark for best rivet placement. That took me up to when the Admiral wanted me to sit down for dinner. After dinner I drilled the first 46 holes and countersunk all but 8 that were too close...
