New to me Colbalt, Overheating only while pulling tube or ski

One side being a bit hotter then the other is normal. Have always seen a few degrees different because the water flows the path of least resistance Maybe a clue, in pic above the thermostat kit item 9 is listed as 3831426, and fresh water cooling In other listing as 3856961 and "160 degrees"...

Being in salt water at one time and open cool could put scale over things and restrict water flow. After the raw water pump it feeds thru the oil cooler. Remove the hose going in and look inside to see if there is any build uup Have you looked at the motor thermostat?

    1994 MerCruiser 7.4L / Bravo 3 26' Envision

The 7.4 is a good motor and like all of them if it was taken care of. Looks just like the one in my 1995 Rinker I just sold. That's the way the exhaust elbows were, nothing I can see of being changed The drive also looks original, has a 2 piece upper ventilation plate

I'm seeing your boat has a separate thermostat for each exhaust. Could be the issue why one is hotter then the other. You closed cool (heat exchanger) or open cool?

New to me Colbalt, Overheating only while pulling tube or ski

I'm just wondering if its a actual overheat or a sensor issue. The largest issue is there is hardly any of us that know the new CAT type motors, and VP is the worst because of close hold on information MUC is one of those that does and most all of them need to use a scanner to find out what is...

Thanks Our expert on VP is @muc and before I call him in I wanted to get the SN because that would be the first thing he would ask for. The 5V reference voltage is low. The 5V Ref can go low by almost any of the sensors on the motor. If one starts drawing more current it pulls the voltage...

    help with iffy gas?

Lets see, once ethanol absorbs all the water it can, the rest floats to the bottom. Suck out the excess water on the bottom and your left with gas mix containing max water it can hold. Increasing octane rating with booster. The higher the octane the slower the gas burns. Low octane burns...

    Poor man’s boat - 1988 sea Ray weekender 230

The hose coming from the drive goes to the thermostat housing. Connect a garden hose there and fire the motor up Most all the parts for a Merc can be found including drive parts. Since your just getting into boating I would suggest getting a SEI drive and it comes with warranty...

    Poor man’s boat - 1988 sea Ray weekender 230

The first rule of an old boat restore is "is it worth restoring"? The cost will mount very fast, only thing that cost more to just own is a air plane. Old boats that had parts removed and sat aside because it got to costly to fix. Look at the inner transom and stringer first. If the transom...

Perfectly for 15 minutes then, surging, knocking, and jumping tac

Being a 2001 it probably has a TKS carb, and if so might just need a carb rebuild. Takes about that long for the module to shut off the extra fuel Serial number would verify And yes that's what davetowz was talking about

First find out if the tabs are up or down and let us know. Next, what is your motor serial number?

    Backing up

Looked your boat up and looks like a very shallow draft center console. Your not getting enough bite in reverse. The motor setup is probably high for max speed, and the prop is designed for forward only movement. If you have or would install and jack plate, could get it lower for backing Just...
