    outboard capacity

Generally speaking, my boat is rated for up 200hp. What would the minimum optimal hp be? I read somewhere it should be at least 70% of the OBC.

how fast could it go with a larger engine?

My '88 Sylvan 21' super sportster, (same as Starcraft SS 21?) came with an 88 hp Johnson ob. This motor pushes the boat about 33-34 mph as shown on the GPS. Is there a formula or general rule of thumb to find out how much faster a larger motor could make this boat go? It is rated for 200 hp...

how fast would a bigger motor make it go!

I have an '88 Sylvan super sportster 21'. The boat came with an 88 hp johnson. The boat is rated for 200 hp. The 88hp pushes the boat (aluminum) 34 mph on the GPS. Is there a formula to determine how much faster a larger motor could push this boat? I'm pretty sure that if I doubled the...

    hard pull

I just picked up a 1955 Evinrude 7.5 hp aquasonic at a yard sale. Did get it to fire, but wow, it's awful hard to pull. Is this the norm for this motor? Is this a high compression motor? I've pulled bigger hp motors that weren't near as hard. Anyone have a similar experience? Thanks.

    pull start to electric start

I have a 1971 mercury 20 hp, serial # 3139888. I'd like to change this over to electric start but can't seem to find any starters listed for that year. I can see on the engine that it appears that a starter can be put on, but again, can't locate one. What will fit? Thanks

control switch, solenoid, or sender/limit switch

'82 485 with MC-1 outdrive has trim/tilt issues! First of all, I must use the "trailer mode" switch to raise the unit. The UP on the control arm does nothing, but the DOWN did work until recently. Now, for the most part, I just hear a click. Eventually, the pump will kick on and it will...

    possible alternator noise

Hi! Never had an I/O before and am learning quite a bit. My '82 Grady White with 485 engine has been converted to an alternator. That said, was that a more efficient move than replacing the stator? The alternator is a Wagner with 1 wire. Not all the time, but certainly enough to be more...

what bottom paint is presently on my boat

I bought a used Grady White last year.(Fiberglass hull) Had it in a slip from end of May thru Sept.(fresh water) with no noticeable alge/slime built up on it. I'm thinking I need to repaint it, but how do I identify what type of bottom paint is presently on it. When dry, I can rub my...

    what size aluminum prop

Just banged up my 14 x 19 ss prop. It's on a Grady White Tournament 223. Boat weighs a hefty 3600 lbs. Rather than spend big bucks on a new ss prop or trying to get the old one repaired, I'm thinking of replacing it with an aluminum prop. Should the size and pitch of the aluminum prop be...

    replacement engine for mercruiser 485

Right now my 1982 Grady White Tournament 22 runs pretty good with the 485 engine it has in it. Unfortunately, I've been reading a lot of negatives about this engine, which has me a bit worried. It has a bit over 2000 hrs. on it and the compression is around 155 on each cylinder. If and when...

    will ss prop increase rpm's

Hi, my Grady White Tournament 22 is presently running a 19" aluminum prop. Recommended wot for the 485 engine is 4200-4600. With just myself in the boat I can attain 4200 rpm's which is obviously the low end of the range. I'd like to gain that additional 400 rpm's. I have a Michigan...

fish finder stuck in simulation mode

Just picked up a boat with an Eagle SeaFinder 480 DF fishfinder. It powers on but seems to be stuck in the "practice" mode. I've traced the leads back to the transducer and noticed both leads,(transducer and speed) have the insulation melted from apparent contact with the i/o engine...

    control box and cables

My 1988, 88 hp engine was replaced by a 1976 200 hp. (boat is rated for 200hp) I've purchased pre 1979 cables and connector kit for the '76 engine but the other end of the cable has no way to connect to the control box. Is there a connector kit for this end also, or will I also need a a pre...

pre '79 vs post '79 control cables

The boat is a 1988 with a 1988, 88hp Johnson. I just had to go faster so I replaced the original with a 1976 200hp Evinrude. Unbeknowst to me at the time, I connected the original control cables that seemed to fit but the controls just did not operate as I thought they should. Now I fine out...

tachometer reading for 4 and 6 cyl.

My 21' Sylvan came with an 88 hp 4 Johnson. I have since replaced that motor with a 1976 200 hp Evinrude. The question is, will I need another tachometer since I now have 6 cylinders as opposed to the original 4 cylinder ob that came with the boat? I ask this because the rpm range at WOT for...

1979 Mercruiser 140 hp has spark, fuel turns over real good, just won't start

I have done a lot to get this going, --new points gaped at 20, new rotor, new plugs(autolite 145) gaped at 30 and they have a bluish spark. It is getting fuel, but after a bit of cranking, the plugs appear pretty wet. Won't even start with a shot of ether to the carb. Now, I have not replaced...

leaky fuel line around the carb.

The hoses were cracked and appeared that some were leaking. Decided to replace all the hoses on the 1976 200 hp Evinrude. Not the hardest task, but still time consuming since it has 3 carbs and numerous 3 way fittings. Replaced all the zip ties with hose clamps. Still leaks around some of...

1976 200hp evinrude buzzer goes off at HI rpm's

The motor starts hard, but I'll live with that. Once started, it runs good for a long time unless I decide to go above 3200 rpms. Then the buzzer goes off. Motor has an aftermarket nosecone/low level water intakes. Motor History. Engine was 1 of a dual set up on some sort of race boat...

    hi performance nosecone question

I have a Evinrude 1976 200hp outboard. This was purchased from someone who had 2 of them on a race boat. Out of the 2 motors, I was able to make one somewhat decent one. Problem--- it keeps overheating at higher rpms.(3500 and up) It has a nosecone on it with low level intakes and the normal...
