    Maxum 17' carpet removal

so, instead of simply removing the carpet which is an 8 hour job, you would rather dump 300# of gel coat in the boat? which will then crack and fail in about a weeks worth of time of using it. Me personally, i would leave the carpeting and replace it when it finally needs it.

    Going from 290 to 280

why not simply keep the 290 and swap the lower with the 280 the gear ratio change is in the lower. the transmissions are the same, and the 290's have a better tilt and trim.

Outboard will only go into "Reverse" gear if propeller is in a certain position

first, welcome aboard. second, nothing wrong. as racerone explains, the motor must be running to shift, or if not running, you must be turning the prop.

    Getting the most horse power

If you are going to swap in different pistons, you may as well do a complete stroked rotating assembly as its the same amount of work If you are going to stick with the electric toilet, stick with a stock mtor

    Getting the most horse power

go big block? seriously, ditch the TBI, go either MPI or carb, go with a better cam and go with a stroker with a good cam and a good 4-barrel carb or MPI, you can get about 300hp at the props with the stock 350 with the same good cam, better pistons, some head work and you can get about 320hp...
