Re: 1968 Holiday Restoration w/pics

Man, sorry to hear that LM. The block is still in the shop. I was waiting for the cam bearings to arrive by mail so I can take them to them. But I already looked at it and it looks as if it was nothing there, just wire brushed. Before i could see the crack though. Every shop talks good about the lock and stitch method. I am very ancious to get my block back though. WIll post pics soon, maybe next week. I definittely let u know if I see anything wrong with it.

Thanks Az. I look forward to your final assesment. I did a little more reseaarch on this method of repair. I think I am going to attempt the repair myself using the lock and stitch method. I may call the shop you used and see what he would charge me to do it as well. I'll be sure to say you refered me if I do call him.

Hey Az,

I have a call in to Jose. If that is the Jose on Dilido my brother knows him fairly well. He owned the business right next door to Jose in that industrial park for many years. Small world I guess. Hopefully Jose can help me out.

Yeah small world. Jose knows me by Alfredo. AZ is my nick. Man im glad he is reputable!! That little center is gated. In one way I like that cause it seems to keeps wondering people out, but when its closed I have to call jose to open the gate. u know like a friend in an a gated apt.

I ended up ordering the kit to stitch the block myself. I have met Jose but it was a long time ago. I do know he has been there for many years. My brother spoke very highly of him. I'm sure you are in good hands. My brother owned and operated "The Do It Yourself Store" for many years right next door to them.

Well, it seems im not having any luck with my engine. Murphies everywhere. To begin with, my cam bearings for some reason fit loosely, wrong bearings. But the machine shop said they would locate some for me but it would be Monday. What a bummer. I was palnning on getting everything together this weekend. So being bummed out i went ahead worked on something else. The batteries. Went to autozone and got me 2 marine battries one for starting and one for the house. $200 and we have a project for the weekend.

So how do I install this. Glad u asked. I had square aluminum tubing left. Measured and cut.

MAH008345.jpg

Screwed the base with stainless screws and 5200.

MAH008342.jpg

Used rivet nuts again and cut some stainless bolts like I did on the gas tank.

And woala!

Nice job with the battery installation Az. When I switched my single battery to a dual battery set up I went with a voltage sensing relay to automatically switch the motor's alternator output to the house battery once the starting battery reached 12.8V. It was an easy job but I wish I'd done the wiring for this kind of set up to begin with. So I suggest you plan which way you're going to go with the wiring (auto or manual switching) before going much further - could save you some time and effort later. Cheers,

Hmmmm lost?? What is the advantage of a VSR over a isolator? I read a lot about both and seams to have the same out come? Voltage from alternator goes to both and the one fully charge will only go to fully charged? The lesser charged will continue to accept the voltage.... I put in a two battery system with an isolator but.... used a deep cycle for house and a "high crank" for just the boat started. Seem no reason to use a deep cycle for that. Acctually not recomended use for that. With and isolator you can use different type batteries without worrie of deep to high crank, etc feed backs. What did I miss?

Re: 1968 Holiday Restoration w/pics

Hi grzzz, how do u say that, when i say it it sounds like grease!:) Just joking fool. Anyway, the isolator has the advantage of long life and trouble free operation but many of the diode based isolators are famous to cause a .4 to .6 volt loss which means that the batteries will not charge to as high a voltage as when they are connected directly to the alternator. They are power hogs, thats why they are in a heat sink.

The VSR allows two batteries to be charged at the same time. When the engine is started and the start battery reaches 13.7 volts, the VSR engages, allowing the two batteries to be charged simultaneously. When the voltage drops below 12.8 volts (or the engine is stopped), the VSR disengages, separating the batteries. Havinf a VSR eliminates the possibility of draining the wrong battery and protects sensitive electronic equipment powered from the house battery from harmful engine start up spikes.Thats a very good plus. Please anybody correct me or add to my comment.

P.S. Welcome to the Starcraft new revolution. (something like that)

Nice battery work man. I was looking at the VSR also and will be looking at picking one up at some point in the future.

I cheaped out and just picked up a manual switch. Most of my charging will come from charging at home as my OB doesn't put out many amps. That is one advantage I see to an I/O...more amps.

Yeah Teamster, I know what you mean. I bought the rivetnut tool Az pointed out earlier in this thread and installed rivnuts on the Admirable's horse float (trailer), now the tailgate and side covers are much more secure than the old stayputs it came with. I love simple tools that work and Az's advice on this one was invaluable. Go for it!

Thanks bud. It seems very simple to install one. Technology just keeps evolving. Can u imagine in the future when these batteries are the sise of maybe a double A battery!!

U know DJ I hear of a few people that while they trailer their boat they charge the batteries with their vehicle through a connector from the vehicles alternator to the boats battries. Might be something to look at.

Added to the list:D

(man this list is getting really long)

Nice tool eh. They are usually used for airplanes but if its good for a plane its good for a starcraft.

He painted it for rust prevention.

Alos recieved my head with the 3 angle job, crack repaired and decked.

MAH008402.jpg

So lets show ya the crack repairs. After looking at the repairs, to be honest, im not impressed. In fact im worried. I just dont feel like it will work, but Im gonna give it the benefit of the doubt.

My plan is to go ahead and rebuild another or install a diffrent size. But this season this will suffice. So I went ahead and started to tape the engine for you know what.

MAH008421.jpg

Used rustoleum high heat primer.

ANd here we go, Royal blue rustoleum.

I was diggin' it till the valve cover. Not up to your usual standards. I think it would look cool if you just painted the whole valve cover that lighter shade. Glad you got your motor back.
