Re: Seaswirl new findings in addition to my rotten deck

So it is looking like i need to remove all the wiring from the rear of the right console and take the 5" by 3' piece of 1" piece of wood out in order to replace it behind the fiberglass so that I have a place to mount the steering. Still have to get my 75 hp motor started to ensure that that works and then take it out to the lake to make sure it floats without issue.

What do your controls look like and what's the backside of the console looks like? There's a couple ways to mount things. It doesn't have to be hard yet

Your descriptions and pics are NOT making sense to me. Not sure why you are thinking you have to replace any wood. Can you take some better pics under the dash to help me understand? Are we talking about Teleflex steering or the Old Dual Cable steering?

This is what I was describing as far as my steering mount point. Do you have a suggestion for removing the wood backing from the console without destroying the original or should I place something in the mount hole to augment it since the whole is plenty big but one of the mount bolts has nothing to attach to?

This is going to be teleflex steering routed starboard side since I had to replace what was an old single mercury engine steering setup. The steering wheel mount holes on the replacement are smaller than the previous mercury steering.

Re: Seaswirl new findings in addition to my rotten deck

I had a 73 SeaSwirl with similar deck problems. Along with the rotted deck were; rotted stringers, rotted transom and soaked foam. It was a basket case so I stripped it and hauled it to the dump, not worth the effort to rebuild,,, to me... I'd check and see what needs to be rebuilt before putting a lot of money into the boat.

For the steering, I'd fill the hole with a wood plug, (fiberglass it in) then re-cut for the new helm.

I have decided to go with aluminum/wood/aluminum backing screwed together so that it can support the steering and mount for strength and support without having to re-fiberglass and recut my holes sits nicely under the plastic teleflex mount.

Well I can say one thing You are an ORIGINAL thinker. The most COMMON method is the method suggested by fishrdan. Plug and glass as the guy did in the link I sent you. the Wheel cover for the new steering should cover your repairs but... It IS your boat so you CAN do as you wish.

Re: Seaswirl new findings in addition to my rotten deck

I have decided to go with aluminum/wood/aluminum backing

I'd glue that stack together so it's a solid mass, not a bunch of small pieces that could shift around. Smear the pieces with epoxy, then bolt the sandwich down. After it's cured, install the helm,

I did something similar on my plastic dash as the thieves thought a sawzall was the correct tool to remove the helm... The dash is 3/8" thick and had a saw blade slice through it. I cut a 1/8" thick aluminum disc for the front/back, riveted and 5200'd the sandwich together, then bolted the helm in place,,, It's solid.

Oh yeah, the aluminum backing ring hides nicely behind the trim bezel, like you mentioned.

So you wouldn't just screw the aluminum/wood/aluminum sandwich together with countersink screws through the console since mine has 3/4" wood backing on the console and then mount the steering through it?

I wouldn't just screw down the stack.

Would it work... yeah
Could you have problems in the future... yeah

The helm is a high stress area and the screws could eventually loosen themselves if you have a bunch of pieces "stacked up",,, and only held together with screws. It would be a real pain to take everything back apart in a few years,,, to fix it right.

A couple small tubes of 5 minute epoxy is all you need to glue everything together, $5 at HomeDepot.

I fixed my steering mount with the two piece of aluminum and wood insert and now just need to buy a new steering wheel and attach the cable to the engine after I get a teleflex engine kit.

Re: Seaswirl new findings in addition to my rotten deck

Steering is in except for the wheel and steering cable transom mount with the sandwhich aluminum/wood/aluminum. I have discovered there are lots of wire breaks in my wiring and some strands that don't actually attach to anything so I am going to replace my wiring for my accessories with marine grade tinned wire and add a fuse box and battery on/off switch.

As far as my deck goes I found this qoute from oops QUOTE][/"as far as your boat......the deck is fiberglassed from the bottom......then screwed to the stringers....then the screws are removed.....then the screw holes are filled with a sealant, (epoxy, or resin, pl9000 or 3m 5200) then the screws are replaced, then it is fiberglassed over with a minimun 8 oz glass."
Does this also work for my 16' seaswirl runabout?

Here's what I recommend, 1.5 oz mat on bottom of Deck, 1.5 on top followed by 1708 Biax. You may or may not choose to screw the deck to the stringers. You Must tab it to the hull around the sides.

That will give you a nice strong deck! 18.5 oz of glass

Re: Seaswirl new findings in addition to my rotten deck

I am pricing the okume plywood and outdoor plywood since I am willing to pay the money for real epoxy but, not alot for the plywood.
I am also curious about what the pieces of plywood will look like side by side will they have an angled edge or be vertical edges and just fiberglassed over the top of the crevices between each one? So when I tab it to the hull along the sides is that with the fiberglass tape? I like the idea of having 18.5 oz of glass in the deck sounds very strong.

$$$

If you want good plywood go with marine grade douglas fir, about $60 for a sheet of 1/2".

You don't have to use that good of a grade of plywood though, a nice grade (AB AC) of exterior plywood would work fine.

Re: Seaswirl new findings in addition to my rotten deck

My plan is to find good exterior plywood grade (AB AC). I recently purchased my transom mount for my steering cable to finish up that project. I also am going to pick up a new woodruff key since mine was too big for the teleflex cable. My intention is to go with the MAS epoxy resin low viscosity resin and slow hardener.
