I LOVE MDO but... 3/4" Will add weight How much ?? for your deck about #20 lbs. I would NOT worry about it. It WILL save you a LOT in resin cost since you do NOT have to pre coat it before applyin the mat.

Re: Seaswirl new findings in addition to my rotten deck

Thank you each one for the great insight. I am continuing to rip out more and more deck out of my boat and tonight discovered some moisture in the area of my transom that was hiding behind my aftward deck on one side. So I am now to the point of questioning is my transom going to be ok? I plan to drill into it probably on saturday to see if i get dry saw dust or a damp mess.

I'm betting on the damp mess....but may the force be with you....

Re: Seaswirl new findings in addition to my rotten deck

I have returned to working on my boat. I have not drilled into the transom yet but, I did manage to get the rest of the deck removed from the boat and even the deck that was located in the bow was soft, black and had water squeezing out of it. I have found some very thin spots in my fiberglass and managed to cut a few spots into fiberglass that I wasn't intending so I have to patch up quite a few places. My question is when you manage to cut a nice slice from top of the fiberglass into the bottom of the boat in about a 6 inch long section which is about an inch thick and only a saw blade wide. How do I patch it?

Grind the slice from the inside and feather it back about 3" all the way around the slice. Cut 3 pieces of 1.5oz CSM first one 1" bigger than the slice next 2" and the next 3" Then cut two pieces of 1708 Biax 1 1/2"" bigger than the Last CSM patch and the Last one 11/2" bigger than it. On the Outside of the boat tape over the slice. Mix up some PB and fill the slice with it. Smooth it out so it's about 1/4" thick. After it dry, coat the entire ground out area with resin and apply the patches. Smalles one first, always coating with resin between each. On the outside you'll need to grind out a slight valley and lay CSM and then sand and fair and then gelcoat or paint. Somethun like below Ovals or squares doesn't matter.

Woodonglass,

Can I use liquid fiberglass body filler with catalyst into the cut first and after it dries sand it and then coat with the layers of fiberglass cloth and and resin between each? I read this is also a good repair option for cuts in fiberglass. I can't find any 1708 fiberglass in my area at West Marine. Should I just use a good 12 oz fiberglass?

Well if you are limited to supplies I suppose you could use Bondo Hair first and then lay down several layers of csm and then two -three layers of 12 oz cloth. NOT my recommended method. What kind of Fiberglass Resin are you using? If you are using the Bondo stuff and the Bondo Mat and Cloth then you are asking for Failure. You REALLY need to buy some quality materials to work on your boat, even if you have to order them online.

That is a finishing resin sold by West Marine I believe and has wax in it. You must apply all subsequent layers before the other layer drys. If you don't you must sand and wipe with acetone before applying the next layer. You should be using a laminating resin. Again you really should be using better quality material.

Re: Seaswirl new findings in addition to my rotten deck

I purchased 24oz biaxial cloth yesterday to put on the topside of the deck. I did not intend on adding additional layers of fiberglass for the top of the deck. Thank you for pointing out that the boaters poly resin has wax in it I had not realized that. So I purchased some liquid filler for the hull repair and a few other trouble spots underneath the deck. I am having a really hard time finding anything other than 6oz cloth in stores in my area. Is there a better online supplier of 1708 glass that is reasonably priced since even Iboats is short on supply?

Re: Seaswirl new findings in addition to my rotten deck

Thank you for that reference. So with your suggestion of buidling up the layers. My plan is to sand down the cut area, work in the liquid filler and then layer 24oz different size circles over the repair site till I overlap it by about 3 inches. I am also understanding since I don't have the 1708 fiberglass cloth that I should buy some 3/4oz chop strand and glass that down first before I apply my 24oz biax cloth to the top surface of the deck. I wish I didn't have to ask so many questions but, I am so new to this type of repair. Thank you for your patience.

Re: Seaswirl new findings in addition to my rotten deck

Lets go over this again....

For the slice in the hull apply the the filler first. Then the circles should be preferably made from 1.5oz CSM. and Finally a layer of 24oz woven, another layer of CSM and a final layer of 24oz Woven. Woven MUST have CSM between each successive layer for proper adherance.

For your deck I have attached a drawing of how I recommend doing decks. You can substitute the 24oz woven roving for the 1708 OR you DON'T even have to use the woven on the deck. One layer of CSM on the Bottom and 3 layers of CSM on the top and you'll be good to go. Run the CSM up the sides of the hull progressively 2" 4" and finally 6". Fill the gap between the deck and the sides of the hull with thickened resin.

Re: Seaswirl new findings in addition to my rotten deck

I went to fiberglass supply yesterday and picked up regular layup resin 2 gallons and MEK for it and I made sure I got 5 yards of 1708 with mat and 10 yards of csm mat to make sure that i have plenty to cover the wood. I will use my regular gallon of boaters polyester resin for the final coats of resin. My question now is I have made templates of the replacement wood with cardboard. Should I make sure that my wood is a little bit smaller like 1/8" than my spaces i am putting them in due to adding fiberglass and resin layers in between the wood and the hull?

Re: Seaswirl new findings in addition to my rotten deck

Another question just popped up after I have done the single good layer of CSM on the underside. I have decided to use the 1708 in the middle and aft part of the deck and the 24oz and CSM in the front part of the deck in the bow under the dash area. Even with all the glass and resin put in. Do I need any screws at all attaching my deck to the stringers or is glassing it to the sides of the hull enough? If I do need screws I intend to predrill the holes fill with resin and then drill them back through into the stringers. I already plan to do that with the chair bases anyway once I have the deck set into place. I planned on pre-drilling the holes so that I have a spot to attache the chair bases.

Should I at least 4 point my plywood with stainless steel screws to the stringers before I lay my 1708/mat and tab it to the sides?
