Re: Seaswirl new findings in addition to my rotten deck

Just an update on my progress. I have cut all my large pieces that fit well in the boat still some sanding required to allow for plenty of fiberglass. I have two small pieces to cut and I will start working with fiberglass tonight. I was able to get wax free resin that uses MEKP as the activator.

Re: Seaswirl new findings in addition to my rotten deck

Between last night and this afternoon I glassed the underside of all my plywood pieces. I still have to do some sanding and then glass with more CSM on the top sides before I take my boat out for a test run on a local lake to ensure i don't have any leaks I need to fill in the hull. I have also included some pictures that I took today.

Re: Seaswirl new findings in addition to my rotten deck

This weekend I was able to fiberglass the other sides of my deck pieces so I am down to applying resin to the sides of each piece and then I am going to place them in the boat and go float test my boat to ensure no leaks before I place corner stainless steel screws and glass it into the boat. I will also put some of the 5200 sealant over my screws before I glass in my deck.

Looks like a lot of dry spots to me (or is it the light angle). Did you precoat the wood with resin, and use a roller for those large areas?

Just wanna make sure you got a good seal on your plywood..

I have gone ahead and sanded off the excess glass that was sticking out over the sides. I will also be applying resin to the sides of the wood so that I don't have worry about any water intrusion. I will also be 4 pointing the corners with a nice resin seal inside my screw holes and 5200 over my screw heads and then blanket with 1708 and then tabbing the sides.

Re: 1970 Sea Swirl 16 foot with bad wood floor

Yesterday I took the boat out for a test float since I had never had it on the water and laid my mat coated wood into the boat. I took it to a local lake just to ensure that my motor that had not been started in 4 months was still up for the task. It successfully float tested and ran great during my 30 minute cruise around the lake. My next task is to complete my deck by installing my screws in each deck piece and then 24 oz cloth in the bow section and 1708 biax in the aft 2/3 of the deck and tabbing the sides. How does priming with Rustoleum marine primer and rolling in some kiwigrip to finish the job?

How does priming with Rustoleum marine primer and rolling in some kiwigrip to finish the job?

What primer does Kiwi recommend? I'm always a little leery of mixing products.

KiwiGrip can be applied over all surfaces providing they are sealed. Any sealer, epoxy, polyester, water-based or otherwise will do. If the sealed surface is glossy, lightly sand with 120 grit, mask out, and then apply KiwiGrip. It is very important that all paint films have been applied and completed before KiwiGrip is applied to selected surfaces. I just thought the Rustoleum stuff would be good since it says it is good for fiberglass. I am going to go with Woodonglass's approach to Rustoleum marine primer. Then I will apply kiwgrip as recommended.

Today I was able to screw down my bow section and glass over it with 24oz cloth. In the middle of this part of my deck restore I am also replacing the wood pieces that contain the drainage square in the aft end of my boat. I took more of my MDO plywood cut it into the small pieces I replaced and coated them in polyester layup resin and resined them back onto the original fiberglass drainage square. After I finish up with my drainage squire then it is time to corner fasten the rest of the deck and start glassing with my 1708 biax.

3 Days ago I was able to finish glassing with 1708 Biax and it turned out amazing much better than I expected 1708 biax over CSM. I will attach pictures to my next post. I just need to finish up with the tabbing of the sides and then I will move on to painting it with rustoleum marine primer for fiberglass. Since I used layup resin I don't have to do much preparation for the primer.

Still no pictures yet but, I was able to finish tabbing up the sides yesterday. I'll do some sanding and wipe down my deck before I prime it. Today ended up with rain so I wasn't able to move my boat back outside for sanding and priming.

I have finally uploaded some new pictures to photobucket. Some of these are old and some are just from 2 days ago. My first restore so gave it my best. Tonight I was applying some Kiwigrip for the finishing touches on my deck

I applied my Second coat of Kiwigrip. Now I just need to register it and insure and I still have some electrical work to do before it is a complete project.

How did you install the bases on your pedestal seats?

You've done a lot of hard work on that boat and should be proud of it now.

Jgngrub I pre-drilled my holes smaller than my bolts and applied 3M 4200 inside the holes on my bolts and underneath my pedastal bases so that I have a strong and water tight bond. It wasn't too hard and I referred to a post that Woodonglass made on another thread.

Re: 1970 Sea Swirl 16 foot with bad wood floor

I recently installed my 4 seat into the deck once I found another base. My father-in-law was in town we were able to reattach the wiring for the bow position light, rear anchor light, console choke switch, and troubleshot my horn down to a push button I still have to replace. We were also able to readjust my float in my carborature so my engine starts and runs better and I adjusted my low speed carb knobs.

Thank you Woodonglass I appreciate that. I do have questions now how can I utilize under the dash for storage. It was suggested that I put in some hanging doors to store life jackets? Has anyone built anything for storage under the dash on a runabout? I was thinking maybe I could use a cargo net to hold some stuff or maybe hanging doors, or perhaps a drawer like setup? My biggest concern is I want it to be fairly light weight. I have like 30 square feet with nothing there and wanna be effective with storage.

I was wondering approximate value that my 1965 75 horsepower evinrude motor might be worth used? It runs well.
