Too bad the "weather test" didn't try just spar on bare wood. Saying spar failed over an undercoat doesn't tell me much. What failed - Spar or the Pelucid/CPES? In both cases of spar over another coating, the spar is peeling from the undercoat, so lets blame spar. :facepalm:Spar has been used for centuries to protect masts, spars and other wood work on sailing ships. Granted, urethane hasn't been around for centuries, but the flexibility of the coating is what protects the wood. What I get out of the test is that not much sticks to epoxy.



I forgot to say this is my opinion and nothing more than my opinion.

GA, It was spar only, on the yellow pine picnic table. Yes, spar has been used for many years but as we all know not everyone takes care on their boats.
I am leaning towards the idea of glassing the exterior of the bulkhead and the helm for longevity. You guys are right glassing the cabinets would be a waste.

Yes, I'm sure it will give it 40+ years, as long as its not left out in the weather.

The bulkhead wall and helm look great in wood, but I wouldn't think they need epoxy or glass.

I live in Toledo, where are you located?

Delaware, North of Columbus, We'll be up that way over the summer.

On PLY, I'm an epoxy guy...only because I use cloth on PLY...and I use cloth to prevent PLY checking. On hardwood, I'll use varnish.

built lots of things with plywood over the years, and have only seen checking on plywood left out in the elements, but I just did a quick web search and it seems to be a bigger problem in boat building, especially with fir plywoods. Hummmmm, I will have to keep an eye on mine, and maybe reconsider glassing plywood in the future. Thanks for the headsup, I wasn't aware this could be a problem.

BGC- looks like you had the right idea with the glass.

My JetStar got the full glass treatment during replacement of the sole. I enjoy spending time in the water as much as I like being on the water. I knew she would have soaked carpeting on a regular basis. It stiffened her up quite and gave me hope it would last longer.

ctswf's encounter with checking. I believe that it's there on alot of builds however it gets covered up with vinyl or carpet.

I think ctwf's floor was bowed because the stringers were relocated and a bit higher than top of the ribs. He said he had to really fight to get the ply riveted in. Also, he used epoxy with no cloth, so the assumption was the ply developed stress cracks. He ended up redoing with cloth on the in place bowed floor and his last report said it was holding up.

I used epoxy without cloth on the SunRunners swim platform and cracked at every bolt hole. Without the cloth it very susceptible to cracking.
The thin glass wets out and gives a clear finish.

Work on the Chieftain has been delayed but engine work is planed to resume in a couple weeks.
