Patrick, i know she is whimpering and i want to glass in the motor mounts and finish up the 1708 on the stringers but i need some answers on the thread. hoping someone will look it over and let me know.

trying to work both together especially while the weather is going to be good

Go ahead and buy a box of 50 rivets, they will all be used eventually.

There are a few places online, or locally if you have a Fastenal or Grainger nearby.

Glad the 140hp runs, that's a good size outboard for your boat.

Thanks HA... I was surprised when i got it running as well and then how well she shot out of the hole, planed out and took OFF

I do have a grainger close by, guess i will get some from them, now just have to figure out the grip range needed. i think the spots are they are needed at are less then 1/4" but will have to check for sure. I really don't like the screws that are in there now.

the type that i want to get are 1/4" shank, closed blind rivets, with the stainless mandrel? Is this correct? Then i will also need one of the larger rivet tools as well as the little hand ones will not work?

forgot to also ask, once the rivets are in place, assuming that they are the 1/4 Closed End Aluminum Rivet, Steel Mandrel, can i put some gluvit on the head to seal off where the mandrel was or should i use something else instead like JB weld?

This site has aluminum/aluminum and aluminum/stainless closed-end rivets.

It also has a great guide to different types of rivets, and the threaded ones that Azlo used on his Holiday. Those are great for anything that you might want to remove down the road.

I believe these will seal good enough without 5200, gluvit, or JB...but it wouldn't hurt to coat them with something. I used 5200 on any thru-hull repairs.

I can't comment a whole lot on that rivet gun, but man, looks like you mean business with that thing!

Here is the one I have been using...

I can't speak too highly of it as I'm on my forth one over the course of my two projects. I have punched a lot of rivets.

yeah the other one is air powered and i would not have to wear out my arms trying to set those rivets, so that is a PLUS. i have the pictures of the damaged areas i hope to get posted later on to see what the best approach would be....

Well with the COLD and the rain, cannot get much done for progress....now i wish i would have taken out the transom so i could have gotten it cut out and glued together.... oh well....

Here are some pictures of where the leaks and damage at the seams are at. Should i try and straighten them out with hammers and dollies or use heat, or leave them alone? you can also see the screws that were used . I am more concerned with the damage at the seams and joints as the primary fix, but also the "waffle" section on the right side of the keel.


the BAD spot with separation and screws. some might be hard to see because of the water on the hull.

The leaking rivets, seams and other dents

around the drain tube

on the transom and the seam at the transom

long "Waffle" area to the right of the keel

These are right after the seam where the rivets are on the transom and the beginning of the long damage i refer to as the "waffle" area.

the above pictures are just to the right of the one below, thought i got one of the two together, sorry.....hope it makes sense.

it is hard to make it out but you can almost see it with the color change in the alum


So how do i fix the problem areas, G-flex, gluvit inside, try to pound the bad areas like the seams out and seal up, or just leave them and deal with it?????

I can definitely see the ripples! From what I've read here, you don't want to pound out the dents because the AL stands a good chance of cracking. How did the boat track during your splash? If it seemed good then seal & paint. Are those closed end rivets near the speedo pick-up?

Looks like she was beached hard or run aground.

The weather really did go downhill today, 30 degrees cooler, no colder, than yesterday. I did nothing on my tinnie today.

you are not kidding about the temp drop........ brrrr

she seemed to track fine on the wet test. it almost looks like it was damage from the roller set on the trailer. they do not touch the hull except the very inner edge. the bow looks like they hit something. I would like to try and get the seam closed up some, that is my biggest concern. not sure if heating it with Map gas and trying to push it in would help or not, hopefully someone more knowledgeable will be able to chime in...

those are closed rivets, the leaks were coming from around the side of the rivets.

IDK much about tinnies, but I'd put a whole mess of JB weld or PC11, sand and paint.

also, I;ve heard heating aluminum might help bring it back to its original shape
