Re: Floor fiberglass help.

What should I use to glass my dash/steering panel? Should I use scraps of 1708 or a full mat of bondo? I don't have enough 1708 left to do it in one piece..

You could pick up some bond-o or 3m cloth at the store..... not the csm but the woven cloth ;)

Re: Floor fiberglass help.

Does bondo or 3m make a CSM. I could only find the cloth and I found hard to work with. Can I soak the panel is resin then just gelcoat that? Or do I need the glass over it? Maybe I just need to do a better job with the bondo mat..

And how manylayers would I have to do to make a cup holder? Maybe I should do tht from a scrap of bi ax?

Just regurgitating what I've read - Resin is brittle and will crack, it needs csm/cloth the give support.

They make both cloth and csm.

That's the thread where I got the idea for the cupholder.. i posted on his thread yesterday asking how many layers of cloth that took and if he just painted right over the cloth. I'm thinking of gelcoating the panel if I have enough left over from the deck

I used 3 lay ups and just painted it.
Gel coat would of been nice but i didn't have any.
On that bondo cloth, after you lay your resin on the wood and then lay your cloth, try smoothing it out with your hands( with gloves on) it will soak tru your gloves but works great in getting out the air and then resin over your cloth.

Use a Plastic putty knife to smooth the resin over the cloth and DON'T use to much resin at first. A little goes a LONG way. the cloth has a tendency to MOVE in ALL directions.

I'm definitely going to do this :D I'm going to get mor ebondo tonight. Can I lay layers on top of each other right away or do they need to cure before layering? How much reisn do you think I'll need for the dash -- I want to make sure I have enough left for my deck. I'm going to pre-coat the dash tonight and cut my holes, ECT.

On ANother note, Woody, do I need to soak the gunwales in resin before applying the mat to them? I'm going to sand them down to the bare glass before I apply the mat, right?

If my fuel lines come wednesdaqy, I should have the floor in wednesday night and gelvcoated by saturday and the interior done by wednesday after that and that'll be splash time!!!!! :D

THANKS again everyone for your input and guidance. I couldn't tackle this project without you all.

Re: Floor fiberglass help.

You can do multiple lay ups....you just have to watch out with the heat that the resin will generate....too hot and the resin will be brittle.

As far as the gunwales.....yes sand area, wipe with acetone and roll on resin and apply glass.....then more resin to saturate glass ;)

Re: Floor fiberglass help.

So it's been a rough few days, don't foresee this being done this weekend, but I would like to have the floor glassed in friday and saturday.

I also wanted to paint the black windshield.. I started sanding it down and it's the chrome-ish silver color that I was going to paint it. Do I need to apply any paint of that? Will it rust?

RESIN AND WAX

Alright, so my fuel hoses are coming today so I can drop the tank in and start putting the floor down.
DO i add wax to the final layer of resin on the top of the deck? I plan to gelcoat it. OR do I only add the wax to the final layer of gelcoat? I'm going to used PL to adhere the deck to the stringers..
How much cabosil do I add to make the PB? How much do you think I would need for about 20 ft of gap-filling.. a pint?

bumping this again... :(

How should I do the deck? SHould I glass it in in pieces..? or all at once?I'm planning to work bow to stern with the "T" piece at the bow getting glassed in first. I'm going to start prepping, grinding and sanding and wiping with acetone shortly. The wood is all getting pre-coated soon.

DOES THIS LAYER OF RESIN NEED WAX?!

Wood to the rescue :D Time to strart grinding and cutting and acetone-ing. I'm hoping to have the front section of the deck in tonight. How about teh PB, what's a good recipie? I don't have chopped fibers, So i'll be using just cabosil and poly.. DO I want a 2:1 mix of cabosil to resin??

Re: Floor fiberglass help.

It's all relative. Just add the cabosil until you get it to the consistency of Creamy peanut butter, THEN add teh MEKP NOT BEFORE. If you've got some scrap pieces of CSM, get some scissors and cut it up into small pieces and mix it in.
