My uncle is beating around the bush, and bull****ting alot so im just going to go the tractor supply route and roll paint it my self.
I know i want to paint it white with a Red or blue stripe.
Would anyone care to make me a list of item numbers from tractor supply website. I tried to make a list but i feel like im not choosing the right stuff or leaving stuff out.

Also regarding foam, i work at walmart as many of you know and we have a recycling section and one of them is always full of random and different size Styrofoam pieces would this stuff work as floatation for the boat? As long as i ask im sure they wouldnt care if i take some haha its always overflowing

As far as how much paint ill need, its a 16 footer, primer, white, blue/red. Would a qt of each be enough? should i get a gallon of each instead? 2 qrts instead?

The white styrofoam is not ideal because it will eventually absorb water with repeated or prolonged exposure. However, manufacturers installed it as original equipment in the 70's and 80's so it's not like it's completely inappropriate. The pink or blue extruded polystyrene sheets from Lowes/Home Depot are better but go with what your budget allows.

For paint, definitely not a gallon. Prolly 2 quarts of each tops. It'll prolly be more like 1 of one and 2 of the other.

Thank you! i will Look into the polystrene sheets, i just thought i would ask about that white styrofoam since i can get plenty of it for free.
Also on woods paint build thread, everything he used i can get a tractor supply, except im having troubles finding the etching primer.

I found Duplicolor's etching primer in rattle cans at Pep Boys reasonably priced. You just need a light dusting of the stuff.

alright guys i got the boat 90 perfect ready for paint. I got paint bought.
Theres a stripe decal that goes all the way around that boat and its becoming damn near impossible to get it off, can i paint over that?

Also what is etching primer and where can i get it and do i really need it?

Also ill be doin the valspar roll method, how long does it take to dry? do i need to add the hardner to the primer too? any advice?

Search zinc chromate (ZC) self etching primer & aluminum. It is widely available in many places, I suspect it was available at TS when you bought the rest of the paint. I am fairly sure it is available in rattle cans, quarts & gallons, some vendors may only carry 1 or 2 of those choices. That may not be enough acetone, esp if you are mixing it into the paint before you apply it. But that may have been only if you were spraying the hull, not the roll & tip or roll & roll method. I don't know about the hardener in the primer.

If you really, really like sanding, prepping & painting the areas of exposed aluminum on the hull & cap regularly and often, the ZC is optional..... So no, its not optional.....

Just because the stripe is difficult to remove, doesn't necessarily mean it is safe to paint over it. Have you tried a hi-heat hairdrier, or better yet a decent heat gun, to soften it and use a good scraper to remove it. Have you tried some of the the commercially available adhesive, sticker etc removers? There is alot of work leading up to getting the boat painted, it'd be a real shame to have that stripe telegraph thru the paint & or have it peel or curl once painted.

Unfortunately there are few short cuts in paint prep, not so different then the foam that you asked about burning out. Sometimes thinking outside the box is great, other times you just end up outside......

It's been a journey, keep after it & you will be extremely pleased with the end results. With no: would-a, could-a, should-a's.

You have an incredible hull that you got for free, make it an incredible looking paint job & put back. It's worth it!

Napa, & all the other auto parts places that sell paint should have it. If you are close to a retail location for automotive paint & supplies they should too..... Heck, I think wally world does here, hit the online TS store & see if they have it, or call the # on the receipt.

Go to YouTube & watch videos of both roll methods. There will be equal support for both methods. It's more about you & how you paint. I haven't done either w/ the TS paint on a boat. But have used both alternately on other rolled & brushed media, most recently w/ an epoxy like 2part product. I found an extremely light tough w/ a brush worked better for me on that project. Other times I smooth w/ quick, light & long roller strokes and get fewer areas that need to be addressed again later.

You might try both methods when you paint the hull w/ primer. Roll/Roll starboard side & Roll/Tip the port. I find that I may change what I had intended to do once I actually start to apply whatever I'm working with. Everything affects how paint & etc lay as you apply them: How warm/cold, windy, humidity, paint load on the roller/brush, paint already on the surface, pressure on the tip/roll final pass, how quickly you work the wet edge of the paint, how quick you follow up w/ the final pass. Until you paint a bunch w/ either method, on many surfaces & in many conditions it will be a learning process fairly often when you do it again.

That i will prolly test out both methods while im primering im also going to do the bottom first, so if the bottom turns out not so perfect i wont be to mad.
Also Im trying to get it mostly bare aluminum but if there is a little paint here and there will that hurt it at all?

not if it's smooth & feathered at the edges

the ZC only needs to be on the bare aluminum. you might want to read about prepping aluminum in advance of the ZC

The ZC is the most important part. Aluminum doesn't inherently like paint. You only need a light dusting of the stuff so I wouldn't hesitate to use rattle cans. Probably wouldn't need too many. I got Duplicolor's at Pep Boys for decent price.

Hey JP you are moving along nicely. I used the Rusto rattle can self etching and was able to get it at the depot and only took 3 cans, for the entire 18dt hull including the transom inside and outside as well as the supports to help prevent future pitting and decy. i did not do a light coating like EZ says, which would have stretched the can out further, i painted it on like a regular coat. I did have to wipe it down afterwards as there was a decent dust left on it after.

the roll roll method worked well once i figured out what i was doing wrong, the roller type is key, as well as the feel for it and light pressure for the second roll. even if you practiced on something like a street sign to ge the feel for it and the SOUND of it.

I'm excited to get it painted, i would love to have it ready to splash in june. Cuz that little extra height makes a big difference in comfort IMHO.
