Re: 1999 Celebrity 190 - Engine Mount and Stringer Repair

Well, my parents were up visiting this week, so I took advantage and re-recruited dad to help out, we got quite a bit done. Here come the pictures....

First off, built a jig for drilling the outdrive stud holes around the keyhole. I had some maple blocks laying around from a previous project, used the drill press to get a straight and perpendicular 1/2" hole drilled through. Then lined up and clamped the jig to the transom, and drilled through. Went very smoothly. After all the holes were drilled, I did a test fit with the outdrive, it slid into place perfectly. Got off lucky I suppose.:joyous:

Then prepped the garboard drain hole so that PB wouldn't squeeze out when filleting the transom. I used a 1" hole saw to cut a plug out of MDF, then wrapped it with enough layers of wax paper to fully plug up the hole.

Then went on to mix up some nice hairy PB and fillet around the transom. Also filled in all the holes, nicks, and low spots in the plywood.

After it set up and cured, this is how the garboard drain looked from the outside. The plan is to use a 1" Forstner bit to core the drain hole after all the tabbing is done on the transom.

Then we bedded and installed the ski locker floor, let it let, the filled the gap between the floor and stringers so there would be no low spots for water to collect.

Still need to tab and glass in the floor. I plan to gelcoat the interior of the locker, so the final layup will be CSM with waxed resin.

Then we moved on to glassing the transom. Two full layers of 1708. Because there were two of us, we managed to get away covering the transom and tabbing to the hull using single pieces, rather than using strips for the tabbing, then overlapping with large pieces to cover the plywood. Because the transom is near 7' wide, a total of three pieces were required for each 1708 layer, the overlaps are off to the side away from the keyhole. I am very pleased with the result.

The other thing we did was cut 2x2's to be used for cleats for securing the deck down. They are all numbered so we know where to put them. We coated them in resin, they're ready to be installed. We also cut strips of CSM to wrap each piece as they are being installed.

That's it for now!

Later gents.

Beautiful glassing!
BTW, you don't need to use waxed resin as your final layer of CSM in the ski locker, if you are going to gel coat...
Best to use wax in the very final layer/coat of gel...
Keep on cranking, you a re doing Grrrr-8!

Are you kidding me....for a first time glasser that's some outstanding glass work!!! WOW..Just plain WOW!!! Not a wrinkle or bubble in sight and large piece of glass. I'm Impressed. GT1M is correctamundo...NO WAX in the resin. Gelcoat the ski locker and then I'd recommend using PVA in a spray bottle. No wax needed at all.

Wow, thanks for all the positive comments guys! Just trying to keep up with everyone else's good work out there on the forum!

For the gelcoat, I thought there was something about using waxed resin on the last CSM layup in order to cure the exposed surface and make it easier to sand in preparation for gel? I'm guessing then, as long as the surface is clean, and still tacky, the gel can go right on? Also, the gelcoat I bought is already waxed, I didn't do my reading before buying. With the waxed gel, is it still possible to do multiple layers as it's tacking up (I'm assuming I will need 2 to 3 coats to get even coverage)? Or will it need to be cleaned/sanded in between applications? Or, am I at a loss with the stuff I bought and need to get something different? Returning it won't really be economical with shipping, and I have two gallons, so I'd like to use it even if it's a little more work. Lot's of questions. :help:

Just finished reading your thread.. You have done an outstanding job on all the work..:first:

You can use the gel with the wax, but you will need to sand and remove all the wax before the next coat..

Congrats on the new I-boats member..
