Hey Mountianeerminer, looking good! Keep up the good work and just think about entertaining the ladies while drinking some encouragement and floating on the lake! Lol! Your glass work is looking really good.

Thanks for the compliments, The only thing I dont like about it is that Glassport Is spelled wrong and I cannot find another vinyl shop with metallic navy.

Re: 87 Glassport rebuild, 16.5'

WOW MM, it looks very good. I am so glad to find someone in WV that is doing the same thing I am. I have an '86 Four Winns Liberator 211 cuddy. The funny thing is that your 16' has a very similar setup for stringers and motor mount. I have been struggling with how to put it back. My motor mount is just like yours. The mount is against the stringer and all glassed in. Four Winns sprayed the glass in but I am using 1.5 matt and woven roving. It will be hard to make all of the turns. Did you tab in the stringers before you glued the mounts in? I am scarfing my stringers about 10' back from the transom. I am replacing my transom and to engine stringers. Did you glass over all of your stringer and motor mount at one time, and is it in pieces or big sheets of glass? I am having a hard time figuring out how to get all of those turns made in the mounts without laying it in pieces. Also, your transom is just like mine. I pl'd it in but cut the wood a little short on the left and right side. Did you fill your gaps in completely with peanut butter or just fillet it and glass. Four Winns told me to fillet and glass over to the sides of the hull but it looks like you filled the gap completely (looks great). I am trying to finish it this weekend. I have to glass in the stringers, mount and deck. My stringers are crazy because they have an "L" in them to get them up to deck height. I will send some pics. I have posted a couple of times elseware. I need to figure out how to get my daughters name changed from my user name. I live in Charleston and my boat is in Calhoun County at our shop. If you would post a couple of close ups of your mounts I would greatly appreciate it. I realy like the way you rebuilt yours as well. The original mount was not done as good. It was not g;ued to the hull or even touch it completely. They just stacked 4 pieces of ply and glassed it in. I filled the gap at the bottom of my transom with resin and chopped strand. I need to make peanut butter like yours instead of just chooped glass and resin. Thanks for your help, Stefan

Re: 87 Glassport rebuild, 16.5'

Afternoon shift and bad sunburn (ginger's curse) have not helped with progress on the boat. I ment to take some pics today, but it is kind of a mute point. It looks about the same, just extra layers of glass on the stringers. I would plan out my weekend of boat work, but im headed to Erie to see the family and remember what a real lake is like, not this impoundment crap they have in WV...im kiddin, i love WV, Erie is better though:cool:.

I am going to use Lowes foam for flotation, cut on edge and stacked for maximum coverage. Im still doing the cost break down over the 2", 1", and 3/4" sheets.

does anyone know about the difference in the regular OMC Cobra shift cable and the one for the 2.3L Ford Cobra...can it be modified to work?

Re: 87 Glassport rebuild, 16.5'

Gracie,

Im glad you found my thread and embrace your daughters name, it only a forum!!!

I havent been updateing as much and didnt see your comment until after I posted that short update.

I PL'ed the mounts, then glassed everything...actually just finished today. I wish I could have snapped a few pics for ya befor I wetted out, its much easier to see in the "white". I did the inside stringers in two steps, inside and outside...grinding any rough edges smooth before putting the other side on. I did the outside stringers all at once. (both in thirds length wise if that makes sence) it has been too hot out to do a large layup and not mess it up.

All gaps were filled and filleted with PB, including the transom. I used about 3-4 gallons of poly just making PB. I know its a little more costly than PL, but I have had bad luck with PL and the PB has been perfect. I have been running "test" peices of PL since my problems and I have found it WILL NOT CURE completely if more than an 1/8" thick...others will probably argue about this...

The turns are hard...I used 1.5oz CSM then overcoated them with 1208 (light 1708), making sure to rout over the edge of the plywood...glass lays better over a radius than a sharp corner. I do have some bubbles I am going to grind out and replace. They are only near the drain holes i put in...otherwise they would be perfect (those drain holes **** me off).

hope I helped,

Mike

Re: 87 Glassport rebuild, 16.5'

Sounds like you are making some progress. I'm not a big PL fan either. Hopefully they have figured it out, but the older products of that type would get so hard after a few years they become brittle. I think those were latex based products, I believe PL is actually a petroleum base product. When i comes to "gluing" stuff, I'm sold on West Systems Six Ten. Keep up the work and post some pictures for us!

Re: 87 Glassport rebuild, 16.5'

Erie about killed me...boats every where...ON THE WATER...my old buddies talking about there jet skis...and the one I sold...

I have been looking at one and have about talked myself into it...help hold me over till the boat is done and let me take my time and do everything right!!!

I finished glassing the stringers for the most part. I just have to go over the areas where the cross boards go and touch up the weep holes after grinding them out. Also, I put an addition layer of 1708 on the transom, to bring it out to 2".

Next I will cut the foam (yes going Lowes style) to fit between the stringers, before putting those top boards in. I am going to try and make a pattern out of cardboard and cut the foam with a hot wire setup...or a bow saw...it depends on how I feel at the time, lol :):):)...then start making deck templates.

I also made a friend tonight. An older gentlemen stopped by too see what exactly I was doing to this poor boat. He is a neighbor from a few houses down that has been watching my progress. At first I thought he was going to complain about the mess...then he offered to help!!! After speaking for a half hour or so I managed to recruit another body to flip the hull!!!

I just cannot see how one big sheet of woven roving or 1208 can bend in a ll ways to cover the motor mount and stringer. Did you use one big sheet or a couple of pieces. I was planning on laying it one way over the stringer and mount, then do the sides of the mount going over the top as well. What do you think?

Re: 87 Glassport rebuild, 16.5'

Gracie,

I have to appologize, after reading back through my posts I was a little vague. I used one "peice" of 1208, but I cut that peice to fit around the turns and angles, not one solid sheet.

I tried to replicate this pattern with poster board, but it did not like the angles too much. It gives you the idea at least (the random cut to the left was a mistake).

On the corners that were not glassed well I cut additional strips of 1208 and filled theses in.
