Are you not planning on pulling the motor?

Attempting to replace the transom, even a partial replacement, with the motor still in the boat, will be problematic to say the least. Have you core sampled the motor mounts and the stringers where the motor mounts are attached?

WOG, I have been suggesting to pull the motor in at least 3 of my posts. Motor has to come out to do a thorough job. the hour to pull the motor vs the 40 hours of trying to work around it is nuts.

89avanti - the original floor lasted 25 years with a small piece of scrap wood holding it together. following the same principle should give you another 25 years. However I like to over-build stuff, so I would run the backer the width of the boat.

I know you have Scott. 4 times actually and once in a private message. I simply DO NOT have the ability to pull the engine. I don't even know where to start. I'm very reluctant of that part of what you guys are telling me to do. I want to do this the right way but just can't see myself doing what you're saying I should do.

Re: '89 Bayliner Avanti restoration - where to start?

WOG - I'm 36. I know that has nothing to do with boat restoration but I'm setting the scene here so you guys know I'm not seasoned.

I've never pulled a motor out of anything. I don't know what type of equipment to use nor do I know if I can do it myself. I'm reluctant to do anything I don't understand. There are wires the combined size of my arm hanging from this engine and I have no idea where they all go back to or where the ones that were disconnected already go. I guess I'm just scared to do what is being asked of me. I'm trying to get around it with every excuse I can muster. I want to do this the right way, I have money to do the restoration the right way but I'm just gun shy on the whole engine situation.

I have a large two car carport where I have the cap nestled. I doubt I could pull the engine out by that without bringing it down.

Ok, That's kinda what I surmised. Do you have any mechanical Knowledgeable buddies that would be able/willing to lend a hand? Couple of avenues to pull the motor. 1.) You could hire a Tow Truck to come to the house an use their winch to lift the motor out once you had the motor mounts and the outdrive bolts all removed. (We can/will help you with all of that) or #2 You can build your own Gantry for about $75 - $100 bucks to do the job of lifting the motor out. I can provide you with plans on how to build it out of common 2x4's and in 2-3 hours you'll have it built. If you have anybody that has any motor knowledge along with the MANY knowledgeable guys here on the forum, I promise you, you won't have any issues with pulling the motor, getting it running (unless there are internal issues with the motor), and putting it back in the boat. You WILL learn a heck of a lot, It WILL be a challenge, You WILL be scared to death at times, but you WILL be successful and WILL have a GREAT FEELING of accomplishment when you're on the lake next summer in a boat that you completely rebuilt from the hull up and know every nook and cranny about and KNOW it's 100% safe and sound for your family and will last for decades. If you want to, You can do this!!!! Doing it 1/2 way is not an option IMHO! Take some quiet time, think about it and make your decision. Make some calls to friends and relatives and see what support systems you might have. Let us know what you decide and we'll be there for you!

Ok Pep Talk Over!!!:D

Re: '89 Bayliner Avanti restoration - where to start?

Its not that hard bud we promise. I'm not a mechanic. But I do pretend to be. I had never pulled a engine before before I did my first (Imagine that...LOL) now I can pull a motor in most cars under 2 hours. they all have the same basic concepts. You will be supprised how easy it will be.

First thing with the wires I know there are a lot of them, get some masking tape, take your time and mark where every single one of them went. Then take a pic of the wires with the tape wraped around it so you can read where it went.

The nuts and bolts get zip lock bags and mark where every sigle one of them go. IF there are 4 bolts that hold the motor down put them all in the same bad (kinda get the idea.) take lots of pictures from every angle before starting anything, that way if you ever get lost you can go back to them. I use a engine host to get mine out but that will all depend on your boat. That can be rented. I do not recomend using your car port (that could turn bad quick.) WOG gantry Idea is great also. That is what most of us use to get our caps off. Thats what I did, and I made my own, and I will tell you the cap is not light.

YOU CAN DO IT!!!!!!!

Re: '89 Bayliner Avanti restoration - where to start?

I'm committed guys. I'm this far and I've never backed away from anything. Like I said in the beginning. This is like a series of small projects.

It will have to be in my carport. I have no where else waterproof. Not to mention I have the cap in the rafters and it still has the wiring harness attached to the engine. So its kinda just dangling there. I would have to build the gantry in the carport or buy/rent a puller for the engine. What weight should I look for? 2 ton?

Thanks for getting behind me guys. Appreciate all of you.

The boat's still on the trailer right? You can still pull it around right? Gantry can be built in yard. Motor stand & Outdrive Stand can be built with wheels so after motor/outdrive are pulled and placed on stands they can be moved back to carport along with boat. We'll get you there!!!!

The boat is definitely still on the trailer. I could pull it around if it weren't for the fact that its still attached to the cap by all of the wires leading to the console and the cap is wenches up under my carport. It's like an umbilical cord. Lol.

My carport and property is also on a grade. A large one. So .. There's that too.

There is definitely a will. Unfortunately I have no way of getting the boat anywhere else without taking every wire off of the engine. They are all stuck through the console which is swinging from the rafters with the cap. Are we talking about taking every wire off this engine???

There should be a connector at the engine

Plus you can rent an engine hoist for $10. Nothing special needed but a small section of chain and an engine hoist.

Re: '89 Bayliner Avanti restoration - where to start?

OK. Here is my plan now.

1. Disconnect, label and photograph all wiring ... OCD-style.

2. Build palletish-style skid to store engine on while rebuilding boat. Using 4x4 or 6x6 boards and 2x's going across to keep moisture down under the engine during rebuild. I'm planning on just screwing the engine down to the skid and storing. The mounting brackets will keep the engine off of the oil pan. SCORE one for luck!

3. Rent engine hoist and remove engine. ** going to need instructions on how to take the engine apart once the wiring is totally accounted for.

4. Get pissed and punch the bag I've conveniently hung directly next to the boat.

5. Rebuild.

....

/sigh

Scott right once again. Wiring harness at the engine for the majority of it.

Questions about a few other items attached to the engine.

1. These appear to be the throttle. One goes up to the console and the other is going down to the bottom of the engine.

2. Is this the drive train? Or whatever the boat equivalent is? It's also going up to the console.

3. This appears to be related to the trim. Hydraulics? It's on the bottom of the outdrive.

4. Is this the trim pump for the hydraulics I mentioned in 3? I think the PO did some fancy fix stuff here because there is a switch in-between the solenoids and the pump. Surely he wasn't controlling trim from the back of the boat?!?!

here is my engine being pulled. I have a fold-up engine hoist and used an engine tilter. rent that too. it will make your life easier if your doing it by yourself

regarding blocking on the engine, here is a view of the simple blocking I used for the last engine pull on current boat- 2 x 4's on a pallet

There is a sticky on the top of the mercruiser forum that has instructions on pulling mercruiser specific. Start with pulling the drive, then engine, then remove the transom plate

I'm at work but does the post for pulling the Merc show what to do with the drive cable and throttle cables? They're very rigid and I don't want to bend them.
