used an engine tilter. rent that too. it will make your life easier if your doing it by yourself

There is a sticky on the top of the mercruiser forum that has instructions on pulling mercruiser specific. Start with pulling the drive, then engine, then remove the transom plate
Per:
There should be a lifting ring on top of the motor @the back right & @the front left corners. Use them as lifting points, and the engine tilter allows you to change the hoisting angle to help lift it up, out & over the transom or gunwales.

To get a bit more lifting clearance you can remove the tires & rims from the axle, support the rear of the trailer w/ jack stands, or let 50%+/- if the air out of each tire. Just be sure the trailer is secured to the hitch ball @ the trailer if you start jacking & lifting the trailer. Thru the motor lift if you can. And make a GOOD mental note to refill the tires before moving the trailer around.

Thanks JB. I totally rolled right over what WOG posted about the PDF. Just a lot of information to absorb. Going to take the outdrive out in a few minutes.

I already have a flat tire on the trailer that the PO didn't tell me about so no worries there. Plus I'm pulling it out of the boat which is on a downgrade so it's naturally lower. This hoist looks manly so I think it's going to work well. Got a pallet from a neighbor who had a 2.5 ton AC unit on it. Nice oak pallet. It will be the engines home for the next few weeks.

:)

OK. I'm well on my way. Took the propeller off and got the bar and bolts for the trim arms disconnected and lowered. More tomorrow. I have to have the engine out by Monday when I have to return this hoist. It was $45 for the weekend or per day.

Make yourself an outdrive stand. It's late & I spent a few minutes trying to track down a pix, but couldn't. It's basically a small stand on casters that rolls up to the back of the boat, supports the outdrive as you remove it from the transom. Then is a handy place to work on the outdrive. You'll want to pressure test the drive while it's off, and replace any needed seals while it's off the boat.

The stand will help when the time comes to reinstall the outdrive.

You'll need a Mercruiser alignment tool to make sure you've got everything setup correctly at reinstall. Check the iboats store, ebay or another iboat may loan 1 to you. Off hand I don't know any I/O owners @Knoxville, but you might get lucky. Be sure to get the CORRECT bar for your motor & outdrive.

Thanks JB. Any other surprise alignment calibrating tuning authenticating tools I'll need?

LOL

That is very pimp! You guys are suggesting a more permanent solution that I'm going to be using. Someone retired built that. HAHAH.. jk. Not really because my dad is retired from 3 jobs now and he's 60 and would build something like that. My problem is I live on a grade. Wheels are not my friend.

That would be an awesome stand for painting it too. Hmmm...perhaps I'll build something along those lines, much more rough but something similar for painting the outdrive.

Did you guys know the replacement decals for the model Merc I have are nearly $150?!?! WOW! I can buy a nice boogie board for that. ... or gas. HAHA...

Thanks guys. My wife is calling this forum my "other family" LOL.

Im learning about self-etching primer for touching up the outdrive. That stuff is amazing what it does to aluminum. I'll need to clean it all off because there is some red gasket stuff seeping over and it just looks terrible. Gotta have side projects.

So that terrible red stuff. Yeah, can't get the outdrive off because of it. Suggestions before I start with a razor knife and a chisel?

I don't know guys. It's red gasket something. Definitely not straight silicone. I guess I have no other option than to cut it off. Needless to say I will be cleaning this up nice and tidy like.

On to the razor blades and scraping. Glad I got self-etching primer today.

Re: '89 Bayliner Avanti restoration - where to start?

OK, irregardless whatever it is...
Once you get to the point of trying to wedge something between the two parts to begin separating them, go very slowly and use the thinnest possible putty knife to work in there...do a tiny bit on one side, then move around to another spot, keep moving around until you start to get some separation, the use another putty knife or even some wood/plastic shims to keep the gap you started, open, and keep working around the whole perimeter, inserting wedges, little by little...I don't recommend using heat from a propane torch because you may damage some seals inside, but that may be another option, just use it sparingly...if you get a little separation, spray some penetrating oil into the gap and let it sit over night...another thing you can do is to put the nuts back on the studs until they are even with the ends of the studs, and while doing the prying thing, tap/ bang the nuts evenly all around...time, patience and persistence are your friends...good luck

If you are going to repaint, you could probably use a wire wheel on a drill motor to knock a lot of that stuff off...

Re: '89 Bayliner Avanti restoration - where to start?

Beauty caps and retaining ring and trim cylinder rod removed.

I've worked on this outdrive for about 3 hours and it's not going past a quarter of an inch. Made a video.

I've triple checked the throttle to make sure it's in forward. I even pulled up some old pictures to make sure I had the orientation of the throttle right so I wasn't mistaken. It's in full forward. I've read a couple of posts explaining how to pry it off but I need clarification.
