Yowza. Good thing you took it apart...Don't think it would have lasted long, and it was obviously leaking anyway. Pretty simple when you get them apart, aren't they? I remember being how amazed I was with the simplicity the first time I had mine apart. I always thought there was some black magic voodoo stuff in there, but there's nothing to it. The whole system is that way, too. If you are the least bit mechanical, you can understand it, and if you can understand it, you can fix it.

I'm glad you got it!

What now geneseo1911?? LOL. What's another side project I could get involved in while I wait for resin to dry?

your going to need to rebuild that transom assembly, new boots, gimble bearing, and a gasket kit for re-installation. to get the engine out its only 4 bolts there are two 3/4" drive bolts behind the engine in front of the steering and the two mount bolts up front. the rest is disconnecting the wires shift cables and throttle cable. Your transom is rotted by the picture provided

step 1 in yellow

step 2 in green 3/8 bolt head 12 point socket

step 3 in white 9/16 nuts after they are off pull/pry the inner plate go out side the hull and pull/pry gimble housing off.

unscrew the trim pump from the deck
unscrew the bilge pump from the bottom and you should have every thing removed.

Glad to see you conquered the beast...man, that yoke had almost nothing left of it...woulda caused you some serious heartache if you would have been out on the great big blue...

I had the truck ready sitting in the driveway pointed towards the retal place when I woke up. Wife was, nicely, yelling down the stairs that it was 9 lol. Thanks wifey. Lol.

Got it returned with time to spare and the engine is now living on a pallet. For a few weeks ...

Hahah. geneseo I have no other time but evening and wee hours of the morn to get this done brother. 3 young boys I want to spend most of my time with so when they're awake I'm trying for do that or work. I'm tired but ill sleep when I'm dead. Lol

I did get this done in the time I have myself. Barely because of the beast outdrive but I got it done.

Now I need to layout my next few projects.

Any suggestions guys?

Transom? Bilge? Stringers? Bulkheads? Should I just paint it and put it back together? Hahaha. Jk

Heading to get an energy drink because I'm back on this starting ....now.

Thanks WOG. I feel accomplished. First engine. No problems. It was as you guys said ... Easy. The outdrive I was going to take a sledge to but patience and walking away from it to refuel when I got frustrated was what saved me. Back and forth back and forth a cm at a time and finally BAM she fell off at my feet and the smiles flowed along with a dance to praise the boat gods for blessing my persistence. Lol.

I hope my reluctancy and everyone getting behind me when I was on the edge of throwing in the towel helps future boaters. Don't give up. Jump in and make it happen for yourself and use the tools and resources iboats.com offers up. Great people. Great advice.

Thanks.

On to the next project.

I totally agree with WoG...this thread is going to become an inspiration to all the future boat restorers out there that say they don't have the knowledge or the skills or whatever to do this...with the amazing help available here on Iboats, there is, I believe, NOTHING that can not be done to a boat...
Congratulations on your perseverance and stick to it-iveness...:high5:
And like carribbean soul just said ^^^^ on to the transom...;)

Re: '89 Bayliner Avanti restoration - where to start?

Took a well deserved night off last night. Caught a cold from my wife and kids I believe so letting my body rest with a double dose of NyQuil last night helped tremendously. Slept for 11 hours I think. HAHAHA...

Going to get some fuel and jump into this transom assembly and on to the transom. I am going to deskin it to see how bad the rot is before I start mindlessly cutting it out. Any other "gotchas" I should keep my eyes open for?

Re: '89 Bayliner Avanti restoration - where to start?

I went ahead and built a outdrive stand this afternoon. Took about an hour ... scouring over pieces of wood and designing something with a twist off what people posted on the forum. Figured since I had some work to do on it I might as well have a stand. Scrap wood to the rescue.
