Now arent you glad you pulled the motor and drive. yes the wet wood looks nasty now, however your nearing the end of the tear down.

Looking good so far. remove the inner covering of 'glass over the rotten wood. take plenty of measurements and pictures along the way. use the 24 grit discs to clean the inside of the outer fiberglass hull, and about 10-12" back on the sides, and about 8-10" up the sides where you will be tabbing in the new floor.

Indeed Scott. I can't believe the PO took this boat out with his grandchildren and children much less himself. He's lucky the thing didn't break in half and smash everyone.

I have a few more questions before I start cutting this transom out.

I'm making the questions into videos because it's becoming more difficult for me to articulate what I want to ask in text and pictures. I'll do a series of videos corresponding to each question.

GRINDING & TRANSOM ....which comes first, the transom or the egg, er, I mean decking?

Didn't get to the other 2 yet, but did watch the 4th. I like how you're thinking thru the demo, sounds like you have totally gotten a good handle on how the boat is put together.

Now the not so good news: You are talking about the process of demo, and as long as you've got the boat well supported, by a cradle hopefully, if you are at stringer removal, the demo phase is demo. You should be doing the demo as a means to be able to put the boat back together when you're done w/ demo, or at the very least put back this 1 area when you get this 1 area demo'd (like the transom). When you demo'd the transom, did it stop at the deck or did the deck end at the transom? Put it back the same way, however it was originally.

If you remove 'just' the motor mount & leave the perimeter glass intact around the bilge, how will you sufficiently attach any replacement stringers to the hull & those remaining 'slots' of fiberglass?

Unfortunately, it is pretty much necessary to remove all the wood wrapped structure shown in video #4. And all the empty fiberglass slots that used to contain wood.

When you get to put back, use BilgeKot or gelcoat to finish the bilge after you get the new wood glassed. It is often done prior to laying the new deck. A ski locker would be done w/ the same and also prior to laying the deck.

you have the key hole pattern for the cutout on the back of the boat don't worry about it. and again the ply wood thickness is 3/4" not 1"

I did but I've loaded it on two iDevices and my laptop and it loads correctly now. I have 4 total videos but JB, you pretty much confirmed my worst fear ... Rebuilding the entire structure of the boat. Cutting every raised edge out of this boat and starting with a hull. I probably would have told the guy who I bought it from to shove it up his ***** if I knew I had this much work to do in order to get it "ship shape" for the lack of better words. I did however make the decision to buy the boat, rebuild the boat and use/keep the boat so I'm in it to win it.

You guys are telling me I need to cut the stringers, bulkheads & bilge out down to the hull and start from scratch correct? No previously used, former wood-touched, left-over shaped fiberglass stringer shells ... just cut it all out down the to the hull, grind it down so it will all stick back when I glue it all back together and all that jazz... correct? /sigh ....

Thanks carribbean. The people who sell the ply to me say it's 1" which actually measures to 3/4" but I think that's what you were getting at.

The keyhole I'm not worried about. It's the smooth curved shape that's cut in the transom. It's like a wave riding from the top to the bottom of the keyhole. Smooth and intentional and mirrored on both sides. I'll try to get a picture of it tomorrow.

I am guessing your talking about the 45deg cut with a hole saw at the top of the key hole? its for the steering arm on the gimble housing. or take a picture....

I am guessing your talking about the 45deg cut with a hole saw at the top of the key hole? its for the steering arm on the gimble housing. or take a picture....

Guys. About the reinforcing the hull. Here is what I've done so far. I used the existing trailer to do the work for me. Is this enough?

I got lucky with the foam. The left side was a little more difficult but I used a 6", very sharp, hiking knife I carry in the mountains to take it all out. Got a third of the left to come out at once and the right I cut into sections and pulled it loose from the glass and it popped right out at my cuts.

they may have cut it like that to give more meat around the bolts, there isn't much edge distance on the bolts. when you replace that wood I suggest the drill- fill- redrill method. ! drill the hole oversize 3/4'' then fill it with peanut butter mixture, redrill to final size. that way when water seeps around the bolts, the wood is protected.

That's a great idea carribbean soul. I will definitely do that with any penetration I do to the hull.

You're making good progress. Aren't you glad you took the stuff off the transom to see how bad it was? Just imagine punching the throttle and all that rotten wood giving way. NOW, imagine how much faster and more solid your boat will be with DRY foam and SOLID wood.

You're also doing a good job with pictures. I just got the new transom glued in on my project, but haven't gotten any pictures uploaded.

ETA: On keeping the hull in shape.....Don't worry TOO much about it during demo. When you get ready to put anything back in, make d%$ sure the cap still fits before you do. I made the mistake on my first project of assuming the trailer would hold the shape, put all the new wood and glass and foam in, and THEN tried the cap. It didn't fit. I managed to get it back on, but it's ugly and needs to be torn apart and fixed before I can sell it. Luckily I have a big empty barn.... You may have to do something more to bring it back into shape before you start glassing, but cross that bridge when you come to it.
