Re: 89 Fiesta Vee 250 setbacks, projects, and upgrades!

thanks mustang,
you are doing awesome on yours. very inspirational. other than the little ladder steps in the pic and the steering wheel center, the only other wood, topside, is my 3 rails in the stern, which i dont think will get much attention this year, but who knows. i gotta tell you sir, i am proud of them lil steps. lots of tlc makes the wood look like candy:D

as far as the compound goes it does a decent job on the light scratches and the second application took the cloudy away right up until i waxed it anyway.
if it doesn't snow tomorrow i'll dig in some and see what i can do. i am really leaning towards the heavy 3m compound that chriscraft posted. i just dont have the heart to hand sand the whole stripe.

Mark, you would be surprised how quikly hand sanding/wet sanding would have gone. You would have been done by now. The first sanding takes the most time, then it gets easier almost like applying wax easy. If you weren't getting any red on the rags you were using there was probably a sealer of some sort put on it a while ago. Start wet sanding and you will see red eventually and not the bad type of red,lol

I think at this point the 3m compound would work for you but so ould the wet sanding. step up to the plate mister!! lmao:D

agreed, and its too funny,
i am sure a few weeks now i have moved my hands many more times than i would have if i wet sanded from the door, however it was spread out into daily beatings,,lol
when i started out with the wax remover:facepalm: no acetone and no buffer it took me like 5 min of running in little circlesto go and buy a buffer to do the work,,,it is truely funny now, and i feel hellbent on not doing it by hand,,lol.
i did lean on some areas with the compound to try to get down to the red but it seems like it just didn't have enough grit to get there, as far as shine, well yep it does shine nicely. if a sealer is in the way well that makes quite a bit of sense. so do you think the stuff you posted has the arse to get down to the red? i would love to show the naysayers that in fact the red, not only was salvaged but looks brandy new. the imperfections are bothering me, believe it or not the shazam mark does not,,,,yet!lol
i keep kicken myself for not getting the rhino film discs. the slow boat woulda had them here a week ago,,lmao

Your not getting any red on your pads? Are you sure this is gel cost and the boat wasn't painted in the past? My green area transfers green onto the pad. Even with just the polish my pads are dark green when done. I would think you would see the same thing on your pads (well... Red).

If its paint, that might change what you attack it with.

nope, no red on pads or anything for that matter. not sure about the boats history, however that being said,, there was a patch near the stern abouve the rail that was fiberglassed and painted over, i know that becouse when i hit it with the acetone some of the white paint came off  to reveal the repair which is i light brown, lol. the red looks original to me was powdered beond pink . at the bottom of the red stripe there is the grey pinstripe and a red pinstripe just above that, is what looks like wax buildup. you can see it in the lower part of the pic
042112after2coatswaxnrestorer005.jpg

i heavily rubbed with acetone and spent alot of time on a few sections to try and compound it off with no avail. and no red.
what kind of stuff could this be?

while i was typing the marina called and my slip is eagerly awaiting my arrival. funny how yesterday i had both feet into the stripe and a reminder from the marina and some warmer weather can change the heart,,:D. i may end up at the slip sitting on the dock hacking away at it there. we'll see what the admiral has to say about it,,lol

thaks chriscraft for posting the 3m compound, i am feeling the 3m compound that you posted. i think ill dive back in to the red at least to try to get rid of what i cant see, that seems to be my issue here. so far my compounding hasn't shown the red gel on the pad. and i did use acetone and really rubbed at the red with a clean towel(heck a few of them, lol) before i started useing the restorer
i am glad we didn't get the snow, yet:eek:.
this is what i am useing
042312005.jpg

it says nowhere on the bottle of any wax in it. just meguiars exclusive micro abrasive technology,,lol

mustang
agreed, buffing on with the wax, waiting and then buffing off seems to have the best result. when i applied by hand and buffed off i had the cloudys everywhere. i was real carefull to switch the pad when i was buffing off, several times,,6 to be exact, 3 per side.

you guys and your beatiful woodwork has inspired me to get after the steps on my ladder and the center of my steeringwheel. at this point i started these i was in (no pic mode:eek:) but the wood looked like i found it on the riverbank, no finish left and i had to sand like a 1/16th off of all sides to get past the nasties. so this is after wet sanding on the 4th coat
042312007.jpg

042312009.jpg

coming along nicely a few more coats and she'll be done

Beautiful work on those steps, lil buggy!!!

I don't think anyone could have better defined sanding, compounding and waxing any better than CC did. Red is the hardest to deal with because, as CC said, UV light oxidizes it more quickly than anything else. I have a spot on the gray color where the number used to be. you can see that it's a darker color there. I was not able to completely restore that.

I'm not a fan of that Meguiars compound. It seemed to gum my buffer up faster than anything else. I usually like Meguiars products, but not that stuff for that reason.

thanks i love them lil steps to,
and agreed Budds descriptions are dead on.

yep and thats exactly what happened useing the above compound. all goes well and then splat off comes a chewing gum consistency bung back on the finish. comes right off but it is real sticky. i did many pad changes for that reason. all in all for the lighter oxidation it did great, but it certainly didn't bite enough to get deeper.
thanks for shareing your results on it.

but shish Budd, i dont wana hand sand. "snifle" i need a tissue, someone get me a tissue.lol

i didn't accomplish anything yesterday except relaxing with the admiral, and thinking of the darn red stripe.
so as a last ditch effort to avoid ahhh errr hand sanding will this stuff do it
Lightshow004.jpg

if compound is sandpaper and sandpaper is compound,,lol.
i really dont think that the red is paint, i believe it's gell, but either way will it handle the red?

i like to keep my workouts to, one pound at a time,,lol

Yuengling, lucky man! Being from CT we can't purchase that here. Need to drive to NY to get it.

I hear good things on the 3M products. If that in itself won't get you the results, you may be stuck with the sand paper. I hope that you cut it and get it looking good with the compound though! I'm sure in the end it will come out excellent, and mirror like!

Mustang,

figure out the shipping and ill send you one up, it is some great soda pop, lol.
didn't make the "toy" store on the way home, i ended up puttin more in at work than i planned, and didn't wana burn all the daylight runnin around so i made a few calls, 3 auto parts stores on the way home and no 3m. i called the "toy" store and they had it. i woulda lost most of the daylight i had left so i will pick up tomorrow.:D
i didn't settle up for a different product! lol so as i see it i graduated today,,,bahaha.

got home and cleaned the interior up some and did some odds and ends fixed my bow light, turns out someone just twisted up the wires, elec tape on the - only, so thats all crimped and heatshrunk and working properly finished installing the fish finder and played around with the loacation for final mount. got another coat on the steps and the steering wheel center. more or less just milling around but had a nice eve.

i hope the weather holds out tomorrow for some more compounding and finishing touches.

hope everyone had a good day

Re: 89 Fiesta Vee 250 setbacks, projects, and upgrades!

well i stopped by the "toy" store today, picked up the 3m heavy compound for the red stripe, while i was there i got a rear anchor light pole(story involved insult to injury) and some of that good smeelin stuff for the head,,wheuuu,,,lol.
picked up the admiral at dialisis and it was rainin so i decided to make good on a promise for a laptop so she has sumptin to do while in the chair as well as helping her when she goes back to school for phsycology(i'm in trooouuuble now.lol) in the fall, once we got her all set up she took us over to the tv section for an upgrade, and just like that we brought home a 24" led hdtv with an over the air antenna. sweeeet. so when we got home she opened up her toy and off to the boat i went. i got it set on the shelf plugged it in to an outlet under the shelf that is shore power only(just found out) plugged in the antenna and i get like 2 channels of over the air crystal clear tv.shaweeeeet. i'll figure out how to tie it in with the fridge so it always works soon, but it sure looks good in there, lol. here is a pic of it crammed in on the shelf

i couldn't resist i love the led's on the s l o w fade between colors sat down and enjoyed a few soda pops:D and watched the boob tube,,lol.

i also learned a little lesson, dont buy generic batteries. the camera is dead again,, but it didn't stop me from spreadin the pics, a lil bad(cell phone pics), and a few puter crashes but it's all here for you guys to see,, bahahaha,,lol

got to add,,, i'm actually glad i didn't splash her yet it was way toooo cold out there. i gotta get me a ceramic heater,,lol

Re: 89 Fiesta Vee 250 setbacks, projects, and upgrades!

spent 2 hours with the 3m compound tonite, got like 6 foot of the stripe done. in my assesment all the funny white stuff towards the bottom of the red stripe is a ghost,,,woooo it also took off more little scratches and i see red on the wool pad yeehaw. stoked that it gets down there
i believe it is takin me extra time cause i got a wee lil buffer and it doesn't keep the speed up very well so it does take forever. i am workin on an option though
hope everyone has a productive weekend

Man, that tv is going to be sweet in there, thats on the interior list on mine which might get done buy year 2015. Glad the 3m is working for you, I have never used it on a buffer so your on your own! lol When I use it on a rag I dampen the rag first before applying compound, then wipe in circular motion until it dries up some , I rub harder and then go back and wet the rag a little and wipe it again in circular motion lighter..

Im glad to here the wife will be going off to learn why your so crazy, lol Nice of you to hook her up with that laptop, I am sure she deserves it for all the time you are spending on the boat. Now tell the truth, did you buy it so she wouldn't miss you while pplaying on the boat? lol ;) Or maybe she bought you the tv for the boat to get you out of the house, bahaha:D

Re: 89 Fiesta Vee 250 setbacks, projects, and upgrades!

^^^ thanks,
it will be a great upgrade, and lure(bahaha:D) to get the admiral to come out with me on those late night fishing trips. there is nothing like being on the water after dark, and all the "creature comforts" should help with the sensory deprevation she usually faces on those late night trips. last year we didn't get much boating in because all the trips back n forth from the hospital ate up our time, but the year before, everytime we went out on the way back to the slip, i would be looking back at her, coat on and all rapped up in a blanket like a cocoon, funny to me, but not so much for her, so as the year drew on she had made fewer of those late night trips:eek:. this boat purchase, the cabin especially, was made to give her and one of the dogs(depending on whose turn it was) all the comforts of home.
the tv is a welcome addition, she has been useing a lil portable dvd player for a few years now. and with the rgb's and underwater led's i am bettin the night use goes up considerably bahahaha. i am really loookin forward to the splash

i think were into crappy weather again today but after work if there is a break i will try to wet the pad down before the next application. thanks for the advice

One pound at a time, lil buggy. You'll get there! I'm glad to hear that you got the 3M compound and that it's working for you. Using the power buffer, I don't believe that you have to wet it, but it sure can't hurt.

Also, sweet TV! and with the Admirals new laptop and a WiFi connection you could probably stream some shows into that new TV. I've got to get me one of those.

Get that boat wet! I'm visiting in Georgia again this weekend with 85 degree sunny temperatures. I am seriously getting the itch to float.

BSnB,
thanks, and one pound at a time indeed:D. hope for progress after work today. its not raining here now.
0 progress yesterday:(. as much as we are having normal spring weather finally, those 70 degree weeks filt like late june and i miss them.

i'm gonna look into a wireless card for the laptop. it's not likely that there will be open wifi in the river valleys close to us, longer pool but not really built up yet. but trips to pittsburgh should have multiples to choose from.

enjoy the grandkids and have a safe trip. remember to bring the nice weather back for us up here:D.

I tried to bring that warm weather back up with me, but from what I hear, CC and others got some nasty stuff as I dragged that warm air in my wake on my return drive. I hit some myself on the drive back Sunday night.

Grandkids were great and they behaved...unlike the weather. :)

pretty nice out there now, thanks:D

yep it is working:D, i got 8 feet done the other day, had to cut the jungle(grass) yesterday after work to make sure the neighbors know someone still lives here,,,bahahaha. i got a few hours to get into it this am before work. but it is slow going. i wish i woulda got the big dog buffer that some of you guys have. my lil one does great putting it on, but when its drying it is slow going cause the buffer wont spin fast under the load. my solution "right now" is to hold it barely touching so it spins quicker. but its taking some time. we will see how far i get today. it is taking that mysterious spots(still looks like wax to me but the acetone doesn't touch it) along the bottom of the stripe off. so far only 1 deeper scratch remains on the section thats done. sweet.
i gotta drop that sammich and get her done while the weathers nice and i have time. i'll try and post bfore work todayto let ya know how far i got.

bonus; just as i was finishing up, a buddy showed up with a big dog buffer,,,shaweet( guess he got tired of drivin by the last few weeks and laughin at me:facepalm:). i tried it on a section, wow much quicker, however i gota stop to get more pads, the one on it, had somthin in it:eek:, no worres tho, glad i didn't go to town with it. with new pads and a few hours of good weather tomorrow i should be able to close the books on this chapter.

hope for a good weather report tomorrow:D
