Lifesucks86 I experienced the exact thing on a sea ray I had with the same 3.0 mercruiser alpha one drive. Bellows went bad, water got in, damaged u joints, shift cables and alot more etc. Got stranded on a lake because it wouldn't shift In and out of gear. Had to get drive rebuilt. Got to keep an eye on the bellows.

Well it shifts fine, it grinds though even if i shift fast ? But its just running a little rough and hard to start the first time, takes about 5 - 6 tries before it fires up .. im pretty sure its the carb or bad fuel think8ng about pumping out all the fuel

It's hard to diagnosis a problem if to don't have the tools to troubleshoot.. I suggest you add them to your tool box or borrow them.

What's your starting procedure

i was just going to drop the drive and pull out the shift cable slowly and remove and replace with new bellow and put some bellow adhesive . while im in there ill check inside the ujoiunt bellow to see if there is any cracks or holes or water/ corrosion / debri, also ill check the bearing to see if it moves freely ..tighten her up, replace the gasket and o rings and put it back together? that should be adequate?

While im waiting for the seals and bellows to come..
My engine is hard to start.. i have checked the plugs tbey were incorrectly gapped at .020 and not at .035
Also chnaged the fuel filter /water seperator and still hard to.start.and it runs rough when running but will die out and not start for about 4 to 6 tries ? Whats the
Firing order ? Or should i pump out all the gas thats in the tank ?

I was asking about this as far as your starting procedure goes...With my 3.0L I launch it and tie it up to the dock because I'm always 99% sure it will
Start everytime. I turn on the blower 3 pumps of the throttle back to N and it fires right up smooth without any issues. Could be plug wires, cap/rotor? Etc

I once had a boat with the "spark arrestor" gummed up for whatever reason and it was a nightmare starting it I cleaned it and it started right up.

How old is the gas in your tank currently?

Also, I am not to sure what you mean by "tighten her up" you should be relacing all the bellows regardless if ones ripped if they're all ripped.

Did you get the proper hose you need for the water intake?

I dont know how old the.gas but i added 6 gallaons last month.. but he had like 10 gallons in there for over 6 months .. maybe more.. i. Pumped all the gas out today took forever.. about 17 gallons.. last 2 gallons had like 5 tablespoons of water.. will that little amount cause isssues? Or can the gas just go bad and still look good ?
Ill check the spark arrestor tomorrow..
Im really hoping its not the carb

Problem with small amounts of water is:1) mixes with and breaks down the ethanol in the gas 2) since is heavier than gas it gets sucked out of the tank first 3) it carries rust and sludge with it that plugs up your various filters and water separators between tank and engine 4) in a carbureted engine it sits on the bottom of the carb and plugs up the ports. Since water is heavier and denser than gas it won't draw and atomize through the small ports, it just plugs em up. 5) in an injected engine it just plugs the injectors.

Old gas is bad gas. Sometimes you can tell by smell. You can mostly just assume it's bad if it's old, especially true with ethanol added to our fuel. Ethanol is hydroscopic and combines with water making it ungood stuff. You can take an 8 oz glass of ethanol and another 8 oz glass full of water and pour one into the other without overflowing them. They combine that easily.

I did see some more water today in the bottom of the last 2 containers.. i cant see the bottom of the other 3 large 5 gallon resavoirs.. i guess ill have to dispose of all that gas $50 worth lol

I did put in about 2 gallons in today and i did clean the spark arrestor but still ran crappy and it died out after 3 min of running .. i couldnt get started again..

Is that to little gas in the tank for the pump to pick up maybe ?

What other things i can check out ?

Ayuh,.... For testin' purposes, put a couple gallons in a 5 gallon pail, 'n run a hose into it directly from the fuel pump/ fuel filter,.....

How do i go about that ? Take out the fuel pump hose that attached to the top of fuel tank and drop that into the pail of gas ?

Ayuh,.... Just pull the hose from the boat tank off, 'n use a length of 3/8" fuel line to go from the can to the pump,...

Took the drive off pretty easy.. everything looks good no water or anything inside ujoint bellow just a lot of grease around the bearing..
Bearing moved freely BUT when spun fast it makes a bearing ball sound sometimes is that normal ?
