Re: Boating the Upper Chesapeake

When I was approaching where the HDG marina Channel meets the main Channel, going to the sand islands, There must have been about 20 boats within 200 yards of each other. Just a cluster F*ck of boats. I almost flipped sideways when a 5 ft wake hit me sideways. There were just so manny wakes going in different directions it was hard to hit em all right.

I have never seen that manny boats packed so tight before. You almost had to wait in line to get on the channel.

I ran into a bunch of bassboats one day jockeying for fuel at HDG, they were everywhere, must have been practicing.

I guess this is payback for all those spectacular, glass like days.

I saw on the marine forecast there was a small craft advisory. Typically that means it's glass out...not today!

This was near coming out of the Tydings channel.

I cruised down Turkey pt, then headed up the NE river. It was a wet ride. I noticed the few boats out were basically idling!
This is along Elk Neck, and the picture does NOT do it justice. it was 2-3' in a few spots, and I stuffed my bow once
I think this is #13 coming up the NE river channel along Elk Neck.

I get to Cara cove, and my wife calls and tells me a mean looking storm is coming through Bulle Rock golf course, which is across rt 40 from our shop.
I decide to high tail it back to Lapidum.
Of course, it always seems the storm is coming down river! I think this went across actually, this pic is before Perry Point near Furnace Bay, after this one I was too busy to take more lol.

I was soaked to the bone! I love my boat, she handles the water well!

Well, at least you made it back safely and now have a better understanding of how you boat reacts to water like that. I would actually enjoy going out in water like that at least once for that reason. Call me crazy but I think the experience would be good. Problem is my wife would never think about it and she is almost always with me! (Which is a good thing).

Oh well, sooner or later it will happen, until that I will keep practing my seamanship skills and learn all I can about how my boat handles.

Exactly my thoughts, I look at the different conditions as a learning experience.

Luckily, this being a Friday, so I was solo. Stacey would NOT have enjoyed those conditions.

Re: Boating the Upper Chesapeake

Hi,
I have been enjoying watching this thread for a while. We havent been down to the Chesapeake this year yet, I just booked a slip for a long weekend on 9/12.
We will be staying in a slip at Bar harbor on the Bush river, Not a big fan of the bush,,""bush river that is"" but i like bar harbor. It a Rv campground with boat slips and we enjoy the atmosphere there and its only 4 mi to the Bay, they got a pool / showers and internet what else can you ask for LOL. We will be sleeping in the boat and I have a few friends with openbows with pickup bed campers comming down that will be staying in the park it-self. Hope the weather is good. Last year we went at that time we had to leave eairly because of the hurricane commimg up the coast and they made us pull our boat a day eairly. All I have to do now is get on the dnr site and get a fishing license. No crabbing this year, I dont feel like digging out all my traps they are a pain in the but to lug around. I was going to bring my trot line but the wife says I get to stressed when we are runnng the line and she wont be able to enjoy her weekend. So I guess its a few good friends some cold drinks and a few fishing poles, cant complain here. Well Ill stop rambling now LOL I just got called into work for a electrical problem... I can see now this is going to be a fun weekend.;)

I drive by Bar Harbor all the time, you can see it from rt 40.

Maybe we can hook up when you are here!

I was wondering when you where going to leave Lake Susquehanna and actually try venturing out into the Bay. :D:D

Your top picture looks more like a normal day for me.

I go into the bay every trip
I launch in the Susky but spend more time in the upper bay than anywhere else. It's been real flat, even around Turkey Point lately.

Do you do much camping?
We like camping down at Pequea. We are there this weekend and campground is practically empty.

Come on down and play with us in the Mid-Bay for a day or two. Then you?ll understand what I meant about getting out of Lake Susquehanna and boating in the Bay once and a while. :D:D

You are a badass, congrats. I will stick to my upper bay, or Lake Susquehanna like you like to call it, even thought that river is many times more rough than the upper bay. But you probably already knew that.

I stuffed the bow around Turkey pt, where the Elk, NE, Susky all come together near the main shipping channel, the water gets weird there.

Glad my comments provide entertainment for you ;)

I've been out below the bridge when it was storming before, and been offshore in a 21' cuddy in Ocean City before too, am I cool now? :p

WOW, your forecast is amazingly huge, must be a tsunami!?!?!?! Hope you guys survive :D

Boy, we're touchy about things.

Since your a seasoned seaman you already know that the forecasted wave heights that you posted don't include the effects of wind direction and tide, right?

Yes I do. I realize that where you live has 12' waves daily! ;)

Oh, and can't take some ribbing back? I'll keep that in mind. :D

So, did anybody make it out yesterday? I anchored out in Cara Cove for a little swimming and relaxation while my wife was back home throwing a bridal shower for her sister. It ended up being a beautiful afternoon! Should be down again this coming Sunday and hoping to do a little crabbing in Elk River!

I missed yesterday for a fantasy football draft. How was the water, sounds like it ended up being a nice day.

We will be out this coming weekend, maybe all 3 days.

Cara, or carrot as my old 1981 chart book calls it, is our favorite place to anchor and swim for some reason.

Thats interesting that the old charts call it Carrot Cove and the new ones call it Cara Cove. Wonder why then name changed.

We will be down on Sunday hopefully but the weather forecast for the weekend doesn't look so good! :(

Hi,
I was going to bring my trot line but the wife says I get to stressed when we are runnng the line and she wont be able to enjoy her weekend.

I hear that, I def get stressed out when running my trot line. Unless you get ten crabs in 600 ft. I usually have trouble keeping the line in the right spot, and it gets too slacked a lot. And people missing crabs really gets me too.
