that sux PM about the ply. can you not use it for the sole instead if you are going to screw it down? Maybe WOG can use it to build his super structure for the live aboard if it goes through?

PMC,

If ya wanna mess with it, you can prolly flatten that plywood. Boil some water and lay the plywood in the driveway on a sunshiney day Concave side up. Splash it with the boiling water liberally and then flip it over and lay a couple of weighted 2x4's on it for a 3-4 hours. This should flatten it back out unless it is total carp then all of the other suggestions about batman etc... apply.

Yah, if you chop up that plywood to use for smaller build stuff (backer plates, stringer risers, maybe even stringers if they aren't too kittywampus).

Or, pile it up and have yourself a bonfire! Just bring along smore making material so the initial expense make it all worth it to ya!

(sorry man, I would have cried like a baby to see all that ply look like taco chips, what a heart breaker)

not a bad idea and it cannot hurt anything given it's current state. You could also park the car on the 2x4s to help with the weight and the if you do after driving around for a bit the cars temp should help to dry it as well i would think.

just trying to help you out bud by shooting spit balls atcha, i mean spit balling..... :)

would hate to see that go to waste, especially since you have time to for the floor. no one around you with a kiln i take it that could dry it out???? some mills do, not sure if the charge would be worth it............ another spit ball, excuse me.

Re: Man vs. Boat (season 1).

Thanks guys... All ideas and spitballs are welcome.... I'll give it one more try with the boiling water and then maybe use if for the deck if I can get it reasonably straight... It's pretty heavy stuff - 3/4 inch and just feels "heavier" than normal ply even when it dried....

Do you guys think 3/4 is okay for the deck? I don't think the weight difference between 1/2 and 3/4 is too significant in the grand scheme of things and would allow for a much firmer deck....

I would think that 3/4" would be fine especially with all the support you will have with the stringers and bulkheads. Mine has only 2 stringers, 4 wings and 2 bulkheads originally. i will add more bulkheads for piece of mind but with 3/4" sitting on top of the 2 stingers it is pretty solid. If i had less support than you will have then i would be concerned with a 1/2" deck. I like the 3/4" as well for the meat of mounting things to it as well and the stiffness.

Approx 25# heavier than 1/2" sheets. The boiling water really works used to do it all the Time when I was in construction. Warping is caused due to one side dryer than the other. Once you wet it out and let it dry a bit, you can set it on edge in the Garage with some 2x2 clamps and I betcha it'll be very usable.

Re: Man vs. Boat (season 1).

Glad you had some quality family time...Didknee Bworld is just up the Pike from me...fun, but exhausting...

Quick question...How badly warped is the Ply???

I ask because I care...

Remember that stringers are long and narrow and can be easily flexed, with a bit of cross bracing, either temporary while they dry in place, or be permanently installed... Could correct this situation...

My 3/4 ply stringers will flex over a foot either way over an eight foot span, the 12 and 14 footers will almost touch the ground if I try to hold them straight out at waist height, yet when I set them up in the hull, I can get them straight enough for boat work...
Heck the original stringers in my hull followed the outer strakes from front to back...I am talking about a foot or more of deflection...
Didn't seem to affect performance any...

Hey I'm just saying...you know trying to make applesauce from apples...

Best regards...
Gus

Thanks GT1M - I swung through your thread last night... Your stringers are looking sweet! Great work.

You have an unfair weather advantage that I must point out to everyone here on iboats.... It was 85 degrees and sunny... We swam outside - in February.... All that to say we expect a mid-march splash from you!!!

I'll get the ply figgered out.... All these suggestions are very good.

I may not be able to see the pics but I can read the progress just fine.
Thanks for sharing everyone. I learn more every week from iboats and threads like this really teach us newbies how things work and the right way to repair them.

Your plywood is sending you a subliminal message saying that your transom should stay curved, hahaha, hehehe.

In alll seriousness though, WOG is right, wet it down and stack everything in the garage on it until it dries out, make sure you put it up on some spaced 2x4s so air can get under it also, but make sure the 2x4s are spaced every 12 inches or less.

I will be doing the exact opposite soon on a project on my boat. I need to bend some wood! Hope it doesn't hurt. :)

Thanks Ricohman... Iboats is a great resource. I would be completely lost without all these wonderful folks showing interest in my build and helping me along.

That's funny.... You are the great protector of the curved transom... It's still going to be curved (just not as much as before).

Hey guys:

Went out to the shop twice this weekend, but managed to get very little done.

Since the cold snap sort of interfered with fiber-glassing, I did a lot of measuring, thinking, planning…. Also, got suckered into starting the go-kart project, which took about 4 hours of my time….

Did pick up a few little items this week:

This is my vintage 1977 mercruiser racing belt buckle… I am going to incorporate it into the build as a medallion of sorts… Either on/near the switch panel or maybe on the dog house…

Also, look who has already stolen my mercruiser shirt that came along with it….

Got a little to do list in mind (measure/cut stringers; layer of 1708 the inner transom; finish grinding/sanding the outside transom), so hope to sneak out there mid-week again.

Got some video that I upload tomorrow or the next day, but it's mostly just me talking out loud about plans, thoughts, measurements, etc... stay tuned.
