Re: Need help with transom repair w/pics

Officially caught up... Just read all 23 pages... What a cool boat, and what a great job you are doing!!... I've seen the thread pop up several times, and always thought to myself --how long can a transom repair take? Turns out that there was a nice, full resto going on over here....

Congrats on the great work and look forward to following along until splash..... You are getting close!

Thanks Pmc ..... welcome aboard. I thought in the beginning that all I was going to do was change the transom but as you can see .... that wasn't the case. I have to admit that I have enjoyed most of it ( not the itch ) and, not knowing a thing about boats, wouldn't have been able to do any of it without the help from the iboats crew.

I liked the seats that I have for the boat but the blue trim in the center didn't match anything on the boat so I went out and bought some marine vinyl coat and solved that problem.

Sorry for the huge can photo ... lol.

I have never used this product so I am not sure how well it will wear .... time will tell.

Looks like the color matched perfect. They didn't have a light blue color?

You sure are making this project look good!!!!
Like what you did with the seats.
Carpet looks good too. I would glue it down.
When is the big splash day set for?

Hey sp ... they didn't have a blue that I thought would match so I stuck with the grey. I figured I was safe that way ... lol.

Thanks Decker ...... I did glue the carpet down .... at least the bottom. I have the sides to do yet then I can mount the seats. I don't have a day set for the splash yet. I have to get over the next hurdle .... the windshield. I cut a new one out of Lexan but I haven't tried to get it into the frame yet. Not sure how that is going to go ... lol.

Re: Need help with transom repair w/pics

I have a question that will probably seem dumb but here goes ... I am going to install some emblems on the boat and the instructions call for using "100% pure silicone caulk". What product is 100% pure silicone caulk or what can I use that is similar? I have some 3m marine adhesive sealant fast cure 4000 UV .... will this work? Thanks.

Yep 3M is 4000 or 4200 is what I'd recommend. Silly-Cone is NOT for boats!!!! :p

100% pure silicone caulk is just that, 100% silicon w/ no other caulking compounds. Not latex modified silicone caulk or a silicone additive in regular caulk. Those are combinations of "normal" paintable caulking w/ some level of silicone added to improve it's weathering or exterior applications performance. Pure silicone resists the adhesion of paint, so to make exterior silicone caulking paintable, it's blended w/ some other caulking compounds.

HD & other big box stores, wally world to maybe, should have 100% silicone in both smaller squeeze tubes & regular caulk gun tubes....

If you have the 4000 UV, I'd probably use it....... Or expecting to use it elsewhere, I'd grab a tube of 4200/5200....

I have a new tube of the 3m 4000 so I guess that is what I will use. I ordered emblems from mark42 and they are made from poly resin so I wasn't sure what to use to install them. He is the one that suggested using the silicone.

Those or some good looking emblems you have there. They should look great on the boat.
I know I have seen somewhere on here or u-tube about making the windshield and how to curve it with heat. I just can't remember where I saw it.
I bet WOG would know. :D

Thanks jb ... I just painted the shark the same color as the boat tonight.

Hey Jon , with the emblems going on it must mean a splash is near!:)
Have you thought about painting the MFG part of the emblem? I think I've seen some of them painted black or red.

Hey sp .... I am getting close to a splash but still a little ways off. I need to get the windshield together and mounted. I have to order the rub rail insert, mount the seats, the motor and connect the steering. Still a few things to get done ..... but I am working on it.

I am going to leave the emblems silver only because I think it makes it look like it is made of metal instead of poly resin but you are right ..... I have seen them painted and they look pretty good.

This might help...
http://www.glen-l.com/weblettr/webletters-5/wl43-windshield1.html

ON the emblems you might consider drilling and screwing. My Lonestar emblems have Posts on then that go thru predrilled holes in the hull sides with compression clips holding them on. I would not want to trust them to adhesive alone. JMHO.

Hey Woody ..... that was one of the things that Mark said when I ordered the emblems was to not use the screw holes because it will crack the resin.

Here is the message that I received:

"DO NOT USE THE TWO SCREW HOLES TO MOUNT THE EMBLEM!!! The emblems tend to crack if a screw is tightened down on them. If you put a screw through the hole, do not tighten!!!

How to mount them to prevent any damage during use:

Clean the area where the emblem is to be mounted. Sand the area with fine sand paper, like 150 or 220 grit just to give the gel coat some 'tooth'. Also lightly sand the back of the emblem. Apply 100% pure silicone caulk to the entire back side of the emblem about 1/8" thick. Press the emblem to the boat, and use masking tape to hold the emblem in place. Some silicone will squeeze out. Leave it alone for now.

AFTER the silicone has cured, trace around the emblem with a razor blade and then pull off any silicone that may have squeezed out. Trying to remove the wet silicone will just end up with a mess.

This method will keep the emblem from being caught on drying towels, polishing rags, etc that could pull and break the emblem during cleaning of the boat. Try to get full contact of silicone on the entire back side of the emblem, especially on the F and G letters".

So ..... what do you think?

I think I'd use Small Stainless Bolts and some 3M 400. I would "LIGHTLY" tigthen the bolts and put Thread Lock on them just as a precautionary backup in case the adhesive failed. But... maybe I'm being to anal here.

Nice looking Logos...Do as Mark said, but just take the added precaution of pre-drilling for the screws, install them with a little dab of 5200, lightly tighten them down...cheap insurance to make sure they stay put...

Soooo Close...
