a little bit of progress the last week altho never as much as i think i'll get done

got the teak rod racks installed....not perfect, as i'll have some interference with vertical rod holders with longer rods, but it's done, for better or worse:

incidentally, the interior bore of that outlet for 1 1/8/1 1/4" hose is exactly the same diameter as the outlet for 7/8" hose that was already on the other side of boat.....have to wonder about what my killer 1500gph bilge pump will put out through that

done:

seeking input on location for horn....decided after i drilled the mounting holes near bow that it might look/work better just aft of the hatch. anyone have any thoughts?

test fit the gas tank, and what i thought was an exact replacement apparently will have some minor clearance issues...no room for filler hose once i get the filler installed. i plan to just cut the plastic tank neck down and shim the filler up, unless anyone has a better idea.

a little photographic parable about how fast crud builds up in bottom of boat and how easily the limber holes clog up:

i sort of punted on idea of boxing in gunwales....more work than i want to do right now and easy to add later. this would have been the first step of that job, so i can still finish it if i want.

the gunwale-to-hull ties cut:

what they look like riveted in place, after adding the linguini (quartered noodles)....green for port and red for starboard

i was only able to get maybe 15 full noodles into the gunwales....am i doing something wrong?

finally, i learned something veeery interesting about noodles. there are noodles and there are noodles. the Canadian made ones i got at Ace hardware for $1.29 are 2 1/2" diameter with a 5/8" center hole. the American made ones i got at the dollar store for $1 are 2 1/4" diameter with a 7/8" center hole. guess which ones give more flotation per foot? i'm too lazy to work out the difference in foam volume, but be aware that not all noodles are created equal. you can see the difference here btween the Canuck ones (orange) and the US ones (green).

B2 - Can't remember what you are doing for seats --- would you consider putting the tank under a front seat or putting a bench at the back to bring the tank more forward to give you room? Just a thought?

I think the horn is fine. Size and location. It's out of the way of the hatch... and besides there is an old saying about the size of one's horn being inversely proportional to ones.... welll I'll leave it there!

By the way --- cool cabin! Like the simplicity and look!

gracias, senor. i'm afraid most of my work is "20-20" though (looks good from 20' away when it's going by at 20mph....)

the old car is my 1969 BMW 2002, my once and future daily driver. once i get the X1/9 out from under carport, i can move the BMW in and get started on it again....motor is built and ready to go in ASA i bang out tunnel to fit the 5 speed. bad "clutter lock" at my place........and the worst clutter is, of course, between my ears!

grabbed this horn cuz it's all stainless, even internal moving bits,and powder coated. i also wanted low profile in case i do end up going with the tiburon look. so what does that expression say about people who not only have to BUY a big horn but post footage of themselves BLOWING it on the internet....??

i need to use this tank in stern cuz i have another one that's going into bow once i get floors in....i want at least 35 gallons onboard fuel + kicker tank. i am going to have to build a box for a seat riser, whatever seat i use, to see over my too-tall console. decided this weekend against cutting console down. i'll have get console in first to get a good idea where to go on that though. i may build it tall enough to put another 12 or so gal tank under it. i toy with idea of a leaning post but most are too wide for this skinny hull.

Thats right... I remember now that you have that great center console setup! My brains gone to vacation mush! You'll need to attach a 90 elbow with a 2 inch or less expansion joint to the fit under the splash well. Even that'll be tight! I used a 2 or 3" piece of fuel hose and a solid elbow that came with the tank to make the tight turn. So far it's worked well. Food for thought perhaps!

"great center console setup" thanks, you're an optimist....we'll see how well it works. i have this nagging fear that i'll get the console location wrong and CG will be way off where it needs to be. already realized that i put one of the deck plates right where the track for rear sliders needs to go, so time to cut yet another hole

i may have to do something similar with my tank using a 90 deg elbow....but i'm afraid to use one with too sharp a bend for fear of gas splashing back when it's asked to make the sharp turn.....EMT bent on a hickey would give the sort of rounded bend i'm ideally looking for.

Mr Brown Truck just brought me a dilemma....how to get a 2x2' sheet of .080" 6061 aluminum home on a dirt bike? maybe wrap it around my body under the jacket, giving new meaning to the concept of "body armor"? on the good side, this will let me get on the supplemental knee braces* tonight, which was one of the things keeping me from being able to pull the transom for final epoxyin'. i also scored a kicker bracket this weekend on fleebay for abt $70 so once that arrives, i can finish the drilling.

if anyone is having trouble finding real zinc chromate primer, Aircraft Spruce has it for abt $10/spray can

Top gear UK had a Vietnam episode where they rode cheap motor bikes from the bottom of south Vietnam to north vietnam . The guys gave Clarkson a present --- a large picture in a frame. He carried it the rest of the trip strapped to VHF side of his bike at the back wheel. Sorta like he hung the picture on the back fender vs a wall. Worked for him! Or just strap it to a back pack --- sorta like wings!

tank and stereo arrived but boat work may be on hold for a week or 3. rather tense discussion with the Admiral recently about all my accumulated junk....been in this house/land complex for 23 yrs now and i have built up QUITE a collection of Klutter. very little of which will fit when we move into her place once i retire, and none of which is more important than making things with her work, obviously. so i'm in major purge mode. any one want a title-less, semi-finished Lone Star? i'll be on board but there may not be much progress to report for a bit.

Seems that as summer winds down, several of these conversations have been occurring :facepalm: I'd gladly take an LS off your hands, if I hadn't just had that same discussion, and you weren't about 2000+ miles away

Carp, I'd gladly loan you some space if my 40 acres & a mule existed & were remotely handy for you to drop hitch & run on the way to work

As much as it will suck... perhaps there is an opportunity here... like sell everything and pick your dream boat --- restored or to be restored! Either way a man needs a hobby... retired or not!! Good luck with the purge! I too just spent the last 2 weeks purging... it actually feels pretty good to do it!!! Now I have a ton more room in the garage to work on the next project!!!

it's also like getting a big package of new tools delivered, when you find all the ones you hadn't seen for years.....

the "library wall" looked like a great idea when i built it in 1989, and it has been over the years. but it now looks pretty obsolete in light of the web. it will be weird going to the used bookstore with more than i bring home!

here are a couple of boat pix til i get more done....test fitting the square tube for supplemental knee braces. tubing is 2x2 with .125" wall and angle braces on transom will be 2x2x.125 L-channel. not sure how i got the angle of the cut so far off where it should have been but i can recut it and no one will see.

Those new braces should keep the Chrysler in check, B2. Measure once, cut twice is my method too. Not preferred, but I sure seem to do it a lot. :facepalm:
