Where can I get foam?

Hey everyone. I'm putting new plywood on the benches of my gregor aluminum boat. The styrofoam blocks under the back two benches were melted by fuel and even had a little mouse den carved into it...

I want to replace the foam but I'd rather not use any spray type products. It's cold outside and I just don't ever want to rip that stuff out. Is there a way to get polyurathane foam(high density) already made so I don't have to make a mold and pour it myself? I know this topic has been covered but I couldn't find any references about where to buy... Thanks for any help Tom

Re: Where can I get foam?

you can buy the pink rigid foam from the big box stores.
or you can beg at the construction sites.

two part pour in foam is the way to go.

Thanks for the tip but could you be more specific?....I feel stupid but I am not familiar with the term "big box store". Home Depot etc....?

Also, could you tell me more about the two part pour in foam like: brand, type, where to buy....aproximate price? Thanks again.

Re: Where can I get foam?

Thanks....I think the solid stuff is the way to go here....don't wanna have to seal up the channels under the benches that allow water to flow to the back of the boat. I may decide later to create some storage in the middle seat so I don't want anything that will stick to the aluminum.

Anybody else have a tip to get something even cheaper?....like styrofoam from a packaging supply store or something?

Try a comercial construction site... sometimes they throw pieces of it in the dumpsters. Also look on Craigs list.

Re: Where can I get foam?

hi xltom. I understand you not wanting to use or muck with the pour foam. you can buy several different types of foam at home depot/lowes that will work. I've seen both the pink and/or blue foam board panels which you have read about. I've also seen large (approx. 4'x1'x1'), white blocks of good 'ol high density styrofoam too. The panels are about $10 a piece and about the same for the large blocks of styrofoam. That being said, I drove behind my local grocery store one day and found tons of super dense, white styrofoam and chunks of that under my decks. it worked great and I was able to chop oit up onto snall enough pieces to fill in all the small voids. hope that helps some. good luck.

Hey, do you remember which store you saw the 1'x1'x4' blocks of styrofoam? I went to Jerry's today(similar to HD & Lowes) and they only had pink styrofoam(polystyrene) in 1" thickness ..... asked a couple stores if they had any in recieving trash but no luck... Thanks

Re: Where can I get foam?

How much foam do you need for some seats? I would think 2 sheets of 2" would do..... Thats about $50

Yes I know I'm cheap...but there's a lot to buy for this job... rivets, stainless hardware, marine ply, stain, polyurethane, wiring, running lights, conduit, rod holders.......and a bunch more stuff too. All has to be done in time for springers(salmon) first week of march!!!! Also I just bought this boat for $1300..

I'll see about trying to get some dumpster dive foam tonight...if not I guess it'll be the 2inch stuff which is only $20 at HD(see link above)...the only sheets for $10 that I saw were 1" thick..

you can go to construction sites and ask for left overs......after 4 hours searching....i got a pickup truck load of the stuff....just look for homes that are just finished the framing phase.

Well.......... I would not put a safety item on the back burner. No one here ever said that rebuilding a boat is cheap.

Don't worry, my benches won't go back on without floatation. I'm riveting them on.

Is there any foam that is more resistant to fuel? Most of the damage on the old foam looked to be melting from fuel in the bilge....I was thinking of putting pvc pipes across the bilge channels to raise the new foam up out of the bilge. Don't worry, I'll still be using more foam than was in there before.....looked to be original (33yrs old) and besides the bad spots held up really well for what it's worth...

Re: Where can I get foam?

The pink or blue is actually a touch more resistant then the white stuff. You could lay plastic over it but do not seal it up or it will hold moisture.
