1970's-ish 20HP Johnson Seahorse. Questions + "what do i need to know?"

Bingo! The 20 was last offered in the U.S. in 1973, but surprisingly it was still offered in Canada & Europe beyond that. The ignition setup shows that it as a 1973+ motor. The 20 was not shown in the 1974 brochure, but in my 1975 Canadian brochure it was offered as an exclusive Canadian motor...

Stripping thick fiberglass from a 1940s cedar strip canoe. Advice?

Greetings. I have an old cedar strip square stern canoe that my father had built for him right after WWII by an old boat builder in Orillia, Ontario. In the 1960s after knocking a small hole in the bottom of it, he plugged the small hole then used fiberglass mat & resin to cover the entire...

1964 Evinrude 9.5 Sporttwin new style idle jet swap?

The "vibration kit" that racerone is referring to was an OMC retrofit for 1964 & 1965 9? motors. Dad had one on his 1965 that he bought new and it made it very smooth running. The way to spot it is to look for 2 acorn nuts visible on each side of the motor (4 in total) on the vertical flat on...

    oil:gas ratio 1957 Johnson Seahorse 7.5hp

Make sure to run ethanol-free gas in that motor. In Ontario, Shell Gold has no ethanol, Silver has up to 5% ethanol, and Bronze has up to 10% ethanol. Gold has the highest octane rating of the three but your motor doesn't need the higher octane; use the Gold for its ethanol-free properties. I...

    Ratherb's 74' 21 Ft Starcraft Islander

I have the 1974 Starcraft Cruisers brochure that I got from the dealer new. The Islander 21' was made quite a few years from the mid-60s through the 1970s at least. Recommended maximum horsepower in 165, in the case of both OMC & Mercruiser meant a 250 Chevy straight six with a 2-barrel. I would...

I had to buy it ! 68 Starcraft restore about to begin .

It looks very much like the boat is a 1968 Starcraft Sprint V15. It would have had an avocado green hull and a jade green deck & transom well. Rated for 65 horsepower. It would have had sleeper seats and a fixed center console, plus the windshield would have had an extruded aluminum frame around it.

Steering Handle Shift Kit for 6-25hp

I don't own the kit, nor do I know where the lubrication points are. I do have a picture from the 1974 Johnson Accessories brochure where the kit is rigged on a new 6 horse.

Help and General Outboard Advice 4 hp Aero Marine

I know this is a stale thread but I want to amend it to include an actual advertisement from Popular Science, February 1970. Note that it said within the ad that the brand was so new they wouldn't appear in the phone book. They were actually soliciting for dealers to carry them! I believe that...

1955 Elto paint colour - what matches?

I was wondering if anyone happens to know the correct paint colour for a 1955 Elto 5. I was talking to Peter McDowell at North York Marine last weekend and he told me that he has correct paint for the 1956 Elto, but not the 1955 unfortunately. Elto of course was Canada-only at that time, but...

Cannot figure out what year my 12hp is

Re: Cannot figure out what year my 12hp is Frank, make me your protog?. I have loved outboards for decades, but obviously there is much to learn. Now that I have a couple of Gale motors under the guise of Elto & Viking I am trying to flesh out the blind spots of knowledge. I have made strides...

Cannot figure out what year my 12hp is

Re: Cannot figure out what year my 12hp is I'd say with the integral tank it is pre-57. Looking at the lower unit without the wraparound covers and rubber dampers for the lower swivel bracket mounts (added 1955 on Johnson / Evinrude) your motor is either a 1954 or 1955. The lower unit your...

1976 Johnson 40 HP Outboard Complete Rebuild

Re: 1976 Johnson 40 HP Outboard Complete Rebuild It is looking good so far. When it come to prep, you get out of it what you put into it. Since you are painting the lower unit black, why not paint your cowl Stinger Orange like the racing Johnsons of the early to mid 1970s? See the attachment:

1956 Montgomery ward 12 hp sea king

Re: 1956 Montgomery ward 12 hp sea king Well put. Sea King, Brooklure, Viking, Sea Bee and I'm sure others were all Gale motors for the most part. Some later Sea King & Viking motors were Chrysler (West Bend) based. Attached is a list of the Sea King 12 horse models for 1956, and the Gale...

Older Johnson, Missing Model, Serial number transom mount tag

Re: Older Johnson, Missing Model, Serial number transom mount tag That motor looks exactly like my 1967 Johnson 9?, model MQ-13. My powerhead "button" has a different number from yours, starting with a C, probably because mine is Canadian-built in Peterborough. The 1967 models use a different...

    Johnson 5HP Seahorse

Re: Johnson 5HP Seahorse To give you an idea about the low speed needle (or gas valve as you call it) at the front of the motor (the little L rod) & high speed needle adjustment on the carburator, take a look at the attachment below. It is from a 1940s Johnson TS/TD manual (5 horse) but the HD...

Head gasket source for Johnson AD-12

Hey all, I have noticed that the head gasket for my 1958 Johnson 7? is a hard to find item. Apparently a previous owner found that to be true also, since they used some black "Squeeze A Gasket" in place of one. 2 questions: a) where do I find a new head gasket? b) how do I clean the black...

questions for restoring my 76 evinrude 9.9

Re: questions for restoring my 76 evinrude 9.9 Sheizer, welcome to i-Boats! I also definitely recommend nymarine as was suggest by previous posters. Peter at nymarine has very recently added the correct rubber seal material for your cowling. He has also added a bunch of 1970s vintage Evinrude...
