Nice work bud, keep it up. Going to be a great boat when you are done.

Re: '89 Bayliner Avanti restoration - where to start?

Thanks Scott. I'm going to go with ply. Cheaper and like you said, this wood - even not being taken care of at all, lasted over 25 years.

I took a few more pictures of the bulkheads and stringers ... cooler, bilge, etc. I wanted to know if I have to remove what I'm pointing to in all of the pictures. There is a foam picture too and I was curious as to if I needed to fill that in all the way to the tip of the bow.

I inspected the engine blocks and they're fine. The center stringer keeps surprising me. It looks good all the way to the back. The PVC you mentioned that in hind sight you would have used through the mouse holes ... how would you do that? I'm not seeing the benefits of running PVC through those holes... ??

Failed at Lowes. Tried to find some 12' 1x8 treated boards and failed. Largest they had were 1x6 in 10'. I may have to use smaller pieces and marry them up against the main bulkhead before the cooler.

Here's a great pic of how one of our members (GT1000000) used PVC on his Limber Holes to seal them and prevent contact with water flowing to the bilge. Note how he first layered the wood with resin and then applied the PVC. Very effective!!!

Don't use treated wood. Fiberglass doesn't like to stick to it. Also, plywood is stronger than dimensional lumber.

Only problem Scott is I can't find any pieces the size I need. I'd have to by a whole sheet of ply and cut it down and none of them come in 12' sheets. That would be 200$ a sheet! Any other suggestions? Or should I just go with the untreated?

Thanks azmav --- snuck that compliment in there and didn't see it. It's hard to not be overwhelmed with something like this. Short of rebuilding the engine this is one tough mother. I'm trying to look at it all as a series of small, very important jobs. LOL. It's hard for me to know what's next though. I want to have everything I need on hand for the next step. That's why I looked for ply today for the two side stringers.

Re: '89 Bayliner Avanti restoration - where to start?

You need 2 12' stringers @ 12" tall & 3/4" +/- thick?

Buy 2 sheets of 3/8" or 1/2" ACX exterior 4' X 8' plywood.

Can you rip a sheet into 12" by 8' long pieces? If you have a circular saw but not a table saw, you can clamp a straight edge guide to the plywood as a rip 'fence' to help keep the rips straight & even...

BTW: 4 pcs cut @12" wide out of a 4' wide sheet, are actually 11 7/8" +/-. You loose the thickness of the blade (1/8") every time you cut. You cut 3 times so 48" less 3/8" is 47 5/8 cut into 4 pcs evenly is about 11 7/8" per.

Cut a total of 6 pcs @ 11 7/8" by 8'

Cut 2 of those pcs in half so you'll have 4 pcs @ 11 7/8" by 47 15/16" and 4 remaining 11 7/8" by 8'

Half lap a half length pc onto a full length pc, flush at 1 11 7/8" wide end. Glue & Screw (G&S) the pcs together w/ what you plan to use on the transom, gorilla or TiteBond3. After you make 2 of these pcs, add a full length pc in line w/ the previously half lapped half sheet on each. G&S it in place. Once secured, flip it over & add another half sheet to the back, G&S it down.

You now have 2 stringers that are either 3/4" or 1" thick, by 11 7/8" tall, by 12' long stringer.

GT1000000 has a great pix of building similar stringers for his rig, in his living room. But pretty good pix & narrative if that ^^^ doesn't get the gears turning.......

OK. I think I have the idea of what you're talking about.

My stringers are 12' long by 8" wide at the widest so I'll not need all that ply.

I just got off the phone with Lowes and they replaced all the ACX with what they're calling blonde ply. Never heard of it but two people I spoke with said it's the same durability as ACX. Anyone ever heard of this blonde wood?

Here is a link to the types they currently carry.

Shop Plywood at Lowes.com!

My father is a master wagon smith. He suggesting using spar urethane if I can't find ACX. Am I going to be coating this play with resin or glue or something anyway to make it impermeable to water?

It's not as good as the Arauco but it'll be ok as long as you seal it properly with resin and mat.

NO urethane on the stringers. You want the polyester resin to penetrate & stick to the plywood.

Re: '89 Bayliner Avanti restoration - where to start?

your father may know wagons, he doesnt know boats.

As jpcurt00 stated, no urethane on the stringers. use resin. then cover in csm.

just like this: http://forums.iboats.com/boat-resto...lly-started-w-pics-384982-25.html#post3586813

as for the stringers, nothing says they have to be one continuous piece. I would sister 2 poieces of 8' long ply strips with 2' of overlap and you have 12'. Or like mentioned, start with 3/8" or 1/2" and bond with a lap joint. If this was the route, I would go 1/2"

I would use titebond III and a few screws to join them, let the titebond dry for about 2 days.

I would also pull the motor and drive to get to the transom vs trying to work around it.

Re: '89 Bayliner Avanti restoration - where to start?

You're right Scott. My dad knows how to start a boat and find the fish. ;)

So no urethane. Gotcha. I took measurements of the two stringers I will be replacing first. They're 1" ply (3/4" reality). Getting some 3/8" blonde ply and marrying it up with some titebond III and screws.

Some questions ::

1. Can I use outdoor decking screws to "screw and glue"? Going to be tough finding a screw that is less than 3/4".

2. Will marrying 2 pieces of 3/8" blonde ply be acceptable in the place of ACX?

3. What resin do I need to buy and from where would you recommend ... once the stringers are built and dried? I'm in Knoxville, TN. I seem to remember someone mentioning US Composites but I wasn't sure if I had an alternative like Lowes or Home Depot ... marine stores, etc so I don't have to wait for mail.

4. Where the left and right stringers used to be ... before they rotted down to mush ... there are 'slots' where the wood resided. Looks like fiberglass. Can I use these slots once they're all cleaned out and just slide the sealed new stringers down in them ... done? or am I going to have to do it a different way?

5. Anyone have any beer?

Had a lull in the work I've been doing. My grandfather passed away two days ago and it's been a bit crazy. Doing most of my work at night into the morning around 2 or 3AM. This project is helping me get my mind of stuff so I am thankful for all of the help guiding me guys. Props for the support you offer.

:)

Re: '89 Bayliner Avanti restoration - where to start?

I asked another iboater out near Sevierville where he got his plywood, his reply:

I bought standard exterior grade ply at 84 lumber. Lowes here in sevierville stocks exterior grade. Also the lumber yard called Tindell's can get anything wanted of course they are pricey though

But as WOG said the blonde wood, sealed well & maintained, will last a long time. Just be positive it is made w/ exterior glue

Study his stringer, deck & transom graphic it's got lots of helpful info:

Re: '89 Bayliner Avanti restoration - where to start?

Hi,

I am the member in Sevierville. I ordered my epoxy from US composites it was here in 3 days and cost were extremely reasonable. I would absolutely do business with them again. Which part of Knoxville are you in (just a rough area).

I believe west marine stocks epoxy resin, it is good stuff from what I understand. That being said I would most certainly go with US Composites again in a heartbeat. Shipping was incredibly fast and you need to go ahead and get used to waiting. Alot of the restoration will be waiting for stuff to cure.

I believe some members resuse the parts where the original stringers were bedded. I think they bed the stringers in using PB then wrap the whole assembly in glass again I am no glasser expert.

The reviews I have read on the blondewood plywood from lowes don't speak very stellar of it. Call 84 Lumber 865-584-4668 they are on Middlebrook pike tell them you need 3/4" exterior grade ply. They have the best prices of anyone in town and the best service as well. You can also call Tindell's but frankly they are over priced and their customer service sucks.

Sorry to hear About your loss
But like you said keeping busy keeps you from thinking of it
Keep up the good work I just finished a bunch of work on my tinny and I have to say its so much more worth while bringing a boat back to life and putting it in the water for the first time it makes you really appreciate it more
Everyone on I oats is full of awesome knowledge and will keep you going so when u get in a lull just remember everyone here is behind you and wants to see you make the first splash
Ill be in the background following the progress can't be much help the glass isn't my thing lol no offense keep up the good work

Re: '89 Bayliner Avanti restoration - where to start?

I would not advise trying to re-use the "Slots" I'd cut em out flush with the hull and grind it smooth and start from scratch. That way you'll be ensured of having a good structural bond to the hull. If SigSaur has dealt with 84 lumber then I would for sure check them out before I went with the blonde wood. I've used it and had "De-Lam" issues with it. Once it's encapsulated in resin and glass just about anything will last with proper care but I'd still go with the best quality I could find for my Dollar's!:D

Listen to woodonglass, he knows his stuff. Hence my disclaimer I think I have seen it done but I don't know that I would adise reusing the slots I'd want the best bond I could get, and rivets are pretty good at that.

Just wanted to drop a picture and let everyone know I haven't fallen off the Earth. Cut more of the deck out last night. Slow process but I'm keeping at it.
