Invited this girl out with me today. She's been looking forward to it all week. As she shows up she mentions that she has to be back IN at 3:30pm.

I apologized but told her there is no way I'm going to be back at the dock at 3:30. However I told her she's welcome to come out tomorrow if she can stay out later and she accepted.

It's 30 min ride in the no wake zone on the boat.

Do they just not realize that 3:30 on a saturday is prime time beautiful boat time? I also don't want to waste the gas and TIME going in and out twice.

So now I'm out here listening to a radio show, drinkin a few drinks alone. However this is 200% better then being on some girls time schedule -

Glad I brought the laptop!!

How well do you know this girl? I'm surprised any female would go out on a boat with someone they don't know very well. Not like they can hop out and walk home.

I've known her since Highschool (10 + years)...

I'm just surprised she:

A) told me 12 was ok, and then didn't show up till 1

and

B) expected me to take her out for 1.5 hours and bring her back.

Sounds like the expectations of the afternoon out on the water were not clear to either party. You both should have been more clear, but it was rude of her to be late regardless.

Have a nice time out solo.:)

Something you could have avoided by communicating a little bit on the front end. At first I thougt your post was a joke. But it gets worse.........

I apologized but told her there is no way I'm going to be back at the dock at 3:30.

Quite the gracious host, arent we?

However I told her she's welcome to come out tomorrow if she can stay out later and she accepted.

Again, could have been avoided by you, as the host, communicating a bit at the time of the invite.

So what? Do you expect all your non boating friends to realize this stuff?

Do they just not realize that 3:30 on a saturday is prime time beautiful boat time? I also don't want to waste the gas and TIME going in and out twice.

Boy, you must really like this person.
Maybe you should ask her for gas money, too? And perhaps some extra dough for your time?
Did your mamma not teach you basic courtesy?

Sounds like you're with exactly who you should be. Wouldn't want any pesky girls bothering you when you're on your laptpop, anyway.

"Drinking a few drinks"????

Please clarify. Are you really boozing aboard and expecting to operate that boat?? Or are those drinks soft?

Listen, I know it's a hot topic, but I come out and have 3 mikes hard lemonades - then wait a few hours (which will typically include water, swimming and hiking, which I just got back from).

I actually bumped into a few people out here that I know so it's fine.

- I've never charged people gas money EVER, not once.

I did mention to her that when I go out I spend at least 5 hours out at the least!

Geez can you guys be any tougher on him. In that situation I would have done the same thing. Olny thing is I would have left dock at noon. No waiting for her to show up.

You really have to be flexable when it comes to women, some more than others.
I would have given her the 30min ride just to test the waters.
Sounds like your more about your boat than the girls.
I remember being single and would do almost anything to wet my lips and that lasted about throughout my teen years, I was married by the age of 20 so can't relate very well.

I am home, the boat is cleaned and covered BY 3:00. Of course we launched at 8:00 (after 45 min drive to launch). To me, that's the best time on the water - early - especially when we splash in ocean. If your friend is a looker and likes to be back early maybe I can help?? Of course I'd have to run it by the admiral!!

Re: Non-boaters, do we blame them??? Just left a girl at the dock!

most non-boaters simply don't know the various dynamics of boating, such as the time and work you have to spend before and after the actual boat ride, the preparation and packing, limited space. Try adding tides into the mix! I take them out to an island for weekends and it's way more complicated, and I often deal with this sort of thing. I try to be patient with those who don't know. I loose my patience over those who won't learn. Those don't care don't get the opportunity to do it twice.

Even a boater can't be expected to know your time and distance requirements or restrictions. When my daughter takes her friends out tubing and sunning they are never more than 10 minutes from the house, so a 3:30 return time is fine. And at least she told you before she got on the boat!

It's often all about communication and not making assumptions. Yo also have to let them know if you want them to help, or even hang around, for launch/retrieve, prep/clean, etc. Sometimes it's easier without them.

PS Too bad around here you can't mention beverages without riling up the tea-totallers. annoying.

Re: Non-boaters, do we blame them??? Just left a girl at the dock!

What gets me is when somebody thinks that it's more convenient for me to pick them up with the boat(and drop them off) rather than have them drive to my house or meet me at the launch.

To the OP I would let her know that you prefer to take longer trips on the boat and try to reschedule. Sounds like she likes boats.
