Re: quick glassing question

i really dont understande the difference between gelcoat and fiberglass, but im reading that build thread you pasted, cool non skid

Think of it like this....say you are gonna put up a barn....and want it to loook nice so have plans to paint it....

the fiberglass/resin is the wood in all of the different types you need to build it nice and strong....the gelcoat is the paint...

gelcoat is polyester resin (in most cases when talking about boat finishes) it just has pigments to give it color and it also uses a higher catalyst ratio, I always assumed to make it harder...but could be to allow for the catalyst to do it's job with all the extra ingredients?

Someone with better knowledge than I will steer ya straight....

Gelcoat is the coating ( Paint ) .. Fiberglass is the surface.

Awlgrip or Gelcoat with griptex is a good finish. Both have their pro's and con's.

YD.

PS. I would use Awlgrip personally.

Re: quick glassing question

Gel coat is made of basically the stuff as resin, the biggest difference is that gel coat contains pigment.

You can use something other than gel coat and they can all work well, but you need to do the correct prep work for them to bond and they can be rather pricy. Gel coat will bond directly to your laminate with no prep at all, or sand as desired then apply it. Later touch up is rather easy if needed too.

Gel coat gives you a very hard finish, and depending on what you use to create the texture it can be like sand paper, which me be good or bad, just adjust the grit for the type of finish you want. You can apply it rather thick so it will last a long time.

Durabak works well and is softer than gel coat, you need to make sure you get the outdoor product though, or it won’t hold up. It’s nicer to walk on with bare feet and is less likely to take skin off if you slip. You need to prep the surface correctly.

Awlgrip is pricy, but goes on thinner so less is used, it’s hard and like gel coat you can adjust the texture by the grit you use. Being thinner it may wear through sooner. You need to prep the surface correctly.

Gelcoat does not stick to Epoxy. Have you decided what you're going to use?

Re: quick glassing question

yes, sadly i walked into wets marine yesterday and saw epoxy resin was $104 a gallon. poly it is lol so the plan is
get filleting down,
then 1708 biax it will be tabbed with
then CSM on the deck and then cloth over.
last night i got half my sanding done today ill get the rest done then get her all cleaned out and the hull wiped down good

what do you suggest the wiping down of dust with? acetone?

Okay, this confuzzled me but let's see if I can get this right. Gelcoat won't stick to epoxy.. but most people use epoxy? BUT, have I read that people will put a wax finish (of some sort) over the epoxy so that the gelcoat will stick? Or am I totally drunk?

I don't mean to hijack, I don't think it really is.. just want to clarify the statement.

The part I bolded ^^^ is correct, the rest isn't

Most don't use epoxy

Wax isn't applied over epoxy, and again gelcoat won't stick to epoxy

Please try to refrain from hijacking

Re: quick glassing question

Rusto isn't typically fuel resistant. So........

BilgeKot/gelcoat/duraback and maybe awlgrip too

Good, thanks.
As I mentioned, I don't think it was really hijacking. Since it was on topic and not deviating from KCCracker's question. I was merely looking for clarification on WOG's answer. But not asking anything about my own project. It seemed silly to create a new thread to ask about an answer in another thread. As we are told, read all the threads to learn. :)

I suspect this is similar to what you are referring to:
Rustoleum Professional oil based paint with acrylic enamel hardener. $50 bucks for paint and hardener.
From here:
what kind of bilge paint and topcoat paint to use on top of epoxy

That ^^^ isn't typical Rusto, and it isn't just the Rusto. The hardener changes the paint drastically, and is EXTREMELY hazardous to your health. Extreme precautions must be taken when using an iso hardener, esp when sprayed.

I wouldn't recommend you use it.

When dealing w/ boat resto, epoxy, poly resin, gelcoat & paint the devil is in the details. You've got to be paying attention & try extremely hard not to miss anything. What you miss might be critical to the products success and more importantly the boat & your safety.

And that's ^^^ what I was suggesting yesterday about deck finishes. Not a decision to be made quickly, there is lots to consider.

I would recommend the bilge coat as well. Iboats has the petit bilge coat very cheap. It is easy to work with, and I like it. Just be sure to roll on thin coats and don't let it pool anywhere. If it puddles up in a spot that spot stays soft and doesn't harden properly.

Re: quick glassing question

If you want to paint the bilge, use gel coat, there will be no special prep work, it will hold up to anything, plus you will already have it on hand. Keep it simple.
