Think of it like this....say you are gonna put up a barn....and want it to loook nice so have plans to paint it....
the fiberglass/resin is the wood in all of the different types you need to build it nice and strong....the gelcoat is the paint...
gelcoat is polyester resin (in most cases when talking about boat finishes) it just has pigments to give it color and it also uses a higher catalyst ratio, I always assumed to make it harder...but could be to allow for the catalyst to do it's job with all the extra ingredients?
Someone with better knowledge than I will steer ya straight....
