countersinking the strips of Starboard for under console base so they’ll sit flat once screwed in place. Note how the poor transom has gotten temporarily transformed into a workbench.

I keep thinking that I’m getting more realistic with making my do-lists but I still never get but a fraction of what I hope to done.

Last weekend was mostly working out the forward bulkhead and measuring and cutting template to follow curve of hull. I got the vertical member in place and made sure it was perpendicular to deck in both dimensions, so I could use it for a reference.

Then measured from it to top and bottom of each faux-strake and cut pattern out of old desk-calendar cardboard, and it seems to fit pretty well. Forgot pic but I’ll get some when I cut it in wood.

I still needed to bend up the bracing to tie the extra knee braces into the ribs. I?d ordered some .080 mild 6061 from Aircraft Spruce but realized I had.....YES.....WAIT FOR IT......some pieces of Lone Star that were the perfect size and already bent to about 85 degrees, so all I needed to do is tighten up the bend to more like 110 degrees or so. Here you see Bubba?s Brutish Budget Bending Brake....clamp piece to transom with hunk of oak clamped in place to hold it down and for reference as to where the bend is at, then beat on it with BFH, preferably dead blow.

And then here?s the finished bend ready to test fit.

[/IMG] I?m sure it will require some fine tuning but pretty happy with result for investment of time and $. so this makes 3 areas where a touch o' the Lone Star tar brush has crept into the Starcraft.....

The latter shelf hides the batteries and ACR in this view and is the one with the water jug being test fitted on it....I will be carrying at least 6 gallons of emergency water at various places in the boat since the stuff outside the boat where i fish ain’t drinkable. I had to move the ACR over and go to some major fun to be sure I could get my batteries in and out as needed, since the hole is barely larger than they are and they weigh 52 lbs each. Good thing I have AGMs so I shouldn’t need to mess with them too much.

the beer will go in the 54 qt fishbox on the way from Defender.....along with the emergency sushi!

Speaking of time sinks......the saga of the angled fuel filler. Cranked table saw blade up to max height and set it for bevel so it roughly bisected a hunk of oak 1x4 at an angle. Then used hole saws to cut circle and inner hole for fuel filler neck. for the hole cutting and drilling, i left the pieces in the orientation they’d been before I cut the 1x4, and then rotated them 180 degrees and glued, so I got double the bevel to angle the filler up right nicely. Hopefully the pix are clearer than my murky descrip

I think the angle is good. Pretty fancy wood cuttin' there.

You need more room for beer. Leave the sushi on the dock and make your own at sea.

that's kinda what i meant on the sushi.....the kind that's so fresh it still has the surprised expression on its face


not much done on boat last night cuz i needed to check valve clearances on El Taco....took 2 hrs just to get down to the valves. so it was about 1030 by time i even started on boat. i did get the "wings" for the forward bulkhead cut out (to span the gap from vertical brace to hull).

the other thing that ate time was the FOUR big boxes from Defender that arrived and NEEDED to be unpacked, wallowed in, and played with. lots of goodies for el barco. hopefully we can avoid dragging anchor, with ground tackle sized for a 27ish' boat

Hey B2, great looking project. I'm in San Felipe till May, so my SS18 is on hold, and I haven't been keeping up with the forum while down here. Spend lots of time out in the dust of the back country. But I took the time today to review this entire thread. What a gas! These guys are the most hilarious help I've had the pleasure of knowing. Lots of good hints here ill be using when I get back this summer. I'm interested to see how you manage to stash all this gear. And keep us posted on that life raft. Seeing as I'll be running the Sea of Cortez too, the info may come in handy. Also, we need to see a wide shot of this console frame work in place when possible. Not that I'm looking out for my own welfare, but I've got to build one too.

I know you'll work your butt off trying to float this project, but don't forget to go fishing once in a while.

MAMAS DON’T LET YOUR BABIES GROW UP TO BE COWBOYS WHO TRY TO ADJUST THE VALVES ON THEIR TOYOTA TRUCK......only 1 valve of 16 out of adjustment at 165K, but it has to be the last one right up against the firewall where even Toyota dealer mechanics fear to tread and the special tool doesn’t fit, so I’m pulling both camshafts to change a bit the size of a quarter. So no work on boat last night.

IM, I’m hoping to take her to Mexico for either Memorial Day or July 4 trip, with a test splash at Elephant Butte before then. Pix will of course be forthcoming, esp if I catch anything. Murphy being the prick he is, I wouldn’t be surprised if my first fishing trip with my New Meticulously Engineered Fish Killer Boat results in nothing but scrawny barracudas.........i’ve heard him around the perimeter of the firelight of late, gnashing his teeth cuz I haven’t lacerated myself on the aluminyum recently to give him a blood offering.......

RH, I’m jealous.....you’re in Baja and I’m stuck at a desk. hope you’re catching something beside cochis (tasty tho they are). Puertocitos and G-Bay are high on my to-fish list. Good advice on the need to go fishing.....I haven’t been to Mexico since Nov 2011. Even if I don’t have this boat ready for Memorial day, I might take the portabote....water in the face is less of a problem when it’s 85 degree water.

I’ll be curious to see how I pull off stowing all this junk too, esp with leaving space for another person or 2 to fish. This is a lot of the reason why I decided to stow tank inside console.

Pretty serious on the life raft (and either a SPOT unit or 406mHz PLB), esp since it will be pretty much mandatory if we go cruising on the sailboat. the weight is as much an issue on the Holiday as the bulk; these things are often 45 lbs. But it will give me peace of mind to really push the limits of what you can safely do in an 18' boat, like island hop across the SOC. in the meantime, I may just strap my 8' Zodiac on the bow...

I still have to get the console done and epoxied before I can get it in place; no way I’m going to lift that monster over the gunwales more than I need to. Even then, I’ll have to get it in place before I add the fuel tank for good. But I’ll for sure post lots of pix, and if you want anything else, I can send in a PM. Or look at my fotobucket, where there are lots more pics than I post here.

Sure and it’s a lovely mornin in the Emerald Isle
but here in the desert we get 40 mph wind and dust storms for St Paddy’s day
not that lawyers celebrate StPDay anyway, feelin an affinity with the snakes and all that

Bozo’s bevel cut didn’t come out so great; hard to tape edges to prevent splintering when you’re cutting a 45. That’s what trim is for....

and Voila! We have something that?s starting to look more like a boat helm and less like a wood box. Plenty of room left for more switches, and for addtl gauges when I add a 4 stroke (oil pressure, temp).

Nother view of the helm. The top walnut plate above wheel is for the flowmeter....I assumed it was same diameter as the standard ?speedo/tach/large gauge? size and used same hole saw. I was wrong.....it?s maybe 1/8" smaller. So I found a walnut headplate that had been destined for a guitar, about 4x8x1/8, and hacked it in half on table saw. Covered the too-big hole and will now cut correct size hole in the walnut. The lower port side walnut plate is where I still need to mount several of the switches that wouldn?t work with my ?" thick dashboard wood.

One more snag is that the krome bezel from old helm sticks out too far, so that I can?t get wheel down onto the taper of shaft enough. We may have a little more custom woodwork coming there but first I?ll try to modify things a bit

thanks gents. hoping to drop it in with9in a few weeks, but i need to get it slathered in epoxy first.

GA, it's heavy enough that i'll need my neighbor's help to hoist it over the gunwale, even before i drop in the tank and batteries. kind of interesting building cabinetry where it has to stand up to 1) salt water 2)its home getting airborne and generally flung around 3) brutal sun exposure and heat 4)occasional hurricanes and trop storms.....one a few years back dumped nearly 24" of rain in a day 5) hundreds of pounds of stuff inside it 6) being used as a grab handle when #2 happens and 6) trailering on Baja and Mexico backcountry washboard roads.

Hi all. Not much progress last few days; mostly working on trim for console (protecting the end grain of the plywood is especially important when your plywood isn’t waterproof....).

Then my wife’s dog, whom we’d found as a puppy and had become her best buddy and insanely-loyal protector, was hit by a car the other night and succumbed to cardiac arrest about 130 am at the emergency clinic, so this has kinda knocked the wind out of my sails for a few days. Not to mention a couple of grand out of the boat resto $. So the pix will be a bit thin today.
