Gas consumption down, but prices up

I read a news story last night that said that US consumption of gasoline dropped by 4.5% in April (compared to April of the year before)... that's about 1.1% of the world's consumption of gas. But the prices still went up...

Not going to comment on why, it's all been said before... greedy evil oil companies, devaluation of the dollar, yadda, yadda, yadda... just thought it was interresting that our gasoline consumption dropped by that much in the first place, then that it had no noticable effect on the price. Makes me wonder if there's anything that can be done to curb runaway gas prices that doesn't involve the creation of a socialist/communist government.

I heard on the radio Tues. that oil prices experienced a "correction" and dropped around $10.00 a barrel....................Course you can't tell it by gas prices.

The gas prices will go down a lot more in the near future IF we manage to lower our consumtion by a few more percentage points.there is nothing half as scary to big oil producers as a general attitude change toward energy consumption.If we become indifferent and go on our merry way,fuel prices will go up yet again
As for socialist/communist ideas.Thank you for warning us all that the big boogy man is waiting around the corner.

I did'nt mean to start a political ralley. Sorry. My point was that this is a difficult challenge and it is going to take generations to fix. Because of our very diverse socioty. The few of us on this thread have differnt oppinions and we share a common interest, boats. The origianal American settlers share a common interest as well, Freedom. I just think it is going to be hard. That's all.​

Hey SgtMaj, I was wondering the same. For the past few years all I heard was "supply and demand", yet, while demand drops, the price continues upward. Things that make you go hmmmm.


At this point, it is what it is. I am tired of flipping on the news and hearing "new record oil prices." It almost sounds like it's a game to the traders/ speculators or whatever they call themselves.

We have to come out of 70's mode and remember oil prices, are not just about the Good ole' USA anymore.

WORLDWIDE demand will have to decrease, before oil prices will drop significantly.

Yes this just shows that any new oil sources shouldnt automatically be turned over with muti year contracts to be controled by the same folks figuring out our cost that are doing it now. Sorta light hoping a drug dealer is going to cut the street price of a few rocks of crack just because he has found some new mules to bring it in from mexico........crooks are crooks

WORLDWIDE demand will have to decrease, before oil prices will drop significantly.

If the price reflected WORLDWIDE demand, prices would not have doubled in the last year and a half. Unless of course the demand increased by a like amount. When is the last time you saw a filling station with a sign reading "Sorry out of gas"?? If the demand created a true shortage I believe that would be a common sight.

I am a true blue American trough and through and I believe in freedom and democracy and that 2nd place is the first loser! Socialism/Communism sucks!

I am scared for my kids future. It is enevitable that this country and the world are going to conform to a one world socialist government and you think we are paying big bucks for gas now? Just wait until we are living the Euopean way 4 and 5 bucks a Liter! Socialist medicine holy crap we will be screwed! Everybody says the answer to lower gas prices is public transit. That works in NYC and LA but tell that to the poor SOB living in Wyoming, South Dakota, North Dakota, and places like that where your nearest nieghbor is in a different area code! No I think the answer is to start running the freakin' drills and using the resources we have right here in the good ole USA and let the rest of the world stick it. Sorry for the rant but GO USA GO!!

Greed is what is driving these obscene price increases. When an alternative that is discovered that will replace it, that is when oil prices will drop. Then many greedy people will be crying how they lost everything. Seems that nobody wants to be patient in making money,,,,,they want it now without any consequencies.

If one was smart, they would purposely keep the prices down to prevent a scramble to compete with energy for transportation. I feel that the stock market has more to do with the increase than anything else. I agree that no stations are out of fuel, there still are many gas stations being built, and I haven't seen any stations out of business like in the 70's.

It is just a bunch of carp on supply & demand just like all the carp on propaganda for Global Warming. People will believe anything, even if it is wrong. This is what fuels the need for greed today.

Funny you brought up the word crack. Oil is America's crack and it's hard for the country to wean itself from this crack. Lot of peoples are already starting to wean themselve but the majority still aren't doing it. Case in point, many on here have stated that they won't be cutting back on their boating habit. They would just cut back on dining out or other things. I still see big SUV and trucks on the road and they drive stupidly like floor the gas pedal just so they will have to slam on the brake at the next stop light. Air conditioner on a nice sunny spring day, etc... Have you guys seen the movie I am Legend? Toward the beginning of the movie there is a scene with a Mobil gas station in the background with it's price sign showing regular for over $6/gal. The year is 2011 in the movie, I caught that part and thought how prophetic?
