    98 johnson 50hp wont idle

built in tanks -- might want to check for water. Pump some in a glass and let it settle out -- water would appear on the bottom.

    What year 85 HP Johnson

I use a foot pump (bicycle pump) with a gauge. With l.u. removed and empty, remove either the fill or drain screw and use the needle and a piece of gasket or rubber to seal, and pump a few pounds into the case. Use a spray bottle with soapy water to identify leaks.

    1971 18HP Evinrude Fastwin

You need a parts diagram/blowup for the carb, with parts identified. I don't recommend taking out the jets as you risk damaging them. Soak, poke with something that won't damage brass, and spray out with carb spray. I use lacquer thinner for soaking -- need to be able to cut through fuel...

    What year 85 HP Johnson

So you need a shift mechanism at powerhead that pushes the rod down when the shift lever is moved forward.

Replaced the nozzle gasket, right? Should have been one in your carb kit. Can't see inside the various passages, so can't really tell by looking whether it's clean/free of fuel varnish.

    Oil mixture

It’s a good point (how to ensure a mix and whether its necessary to take some action — and then whether it’s best to take it shaken or stirred.) I remember family vacations in Michigan’s upper peninsula (actually, Dad’s annual fishing vacation). When we bought outboard gas at the local...

    What year 85 HP Johnson

Don't know if you ordered the impeller kit yet, but it looks to me like all you need this time around is the impeller -- think I would get one with a brass center if that's available (maybe your's is a hint at the year (?), but probably not.) The price difference is substantial between a full...

1990 40 hp tiller won't run full speed

"cleaned carbs" like "good spark" aren't too useful when problems indicate poss. ignition issues or carb issues. Start by posting model number to narrow things down. Then talk about methods for carb cleaning and spark testing (test of magneto output/strength).

    73 20hp johnson part swap/search

?? don't you need 0385990 for an exact '73 match? I would get the '69 carb 0383725 for $20 -- but won't see that number on the carb, only numbers for parts of carb assembly.

Actually, 2.56 oz/gal. -- but 2.5, I guess, if you aren't real fussy. 3 oz if you want to be a little more cautious.

    1971 Johnson 60esl-71c

Try jumping from your truck -- truck engine on, like you were jumping a vehicle (OK, a land-based vehicle). Pos. goes to the post on the starter. Neg goes to the starter bracket. See if it spins faster than before (don't go through the solenoid, and don't let the sparks scare you off -- but...

got it yet? a punch or finishing nail can help to get it into exact position. Lots of patience may be required.

    Oil mixture

You're testing the operation of this new-to-you boat (Post a model number). Motors are destroyed by overheating so a first step is to replace the water pump -- done every other year or so, depending on use. River running is hard on impellers (sand) -- impeller is neoprene, and wears out. But...

    Oil mixture

Make sure the wire harness for the oil supply system is disconnected, and the hose plugged at the pump. Premix means you manually mix the oil (ratio is 50:1, or about 3 oz. 2-cycle oil per gallon of gas). Use a portable tank when up and running. To test, mix up one or two gallons for testing.

    15hp 1979 outboard motor troubles

If the flywheel key is not exactly placed, the timing will be off. It must be a perfect fit in the slot, and be unbent.

Fuel line question on 1968 Fastwin 18

Lightly close the needle at the top of the carb (clockwise). Open it 1 1/2 turns and try to start -- If it starts, let it warm up then fine tune (close needle 1/8 turn at a time until engine lean sneezes or stalls, then open about a quarter turn. Make sure you are running in enough water...

    15hp 1979 outboard motor troubles

think I would replace the key with an oem one: 0318931. Not clear to me what happened -- sounds like a loose bolt wedged the flywheel? Is the lower unit operating smoothly after the mishap -- unlikely but might have sheared the driveshaft.
